On the SCFC football page there is currently a thread on the 5 most famous Stoke players, and Geoff Hurst is a popular choice. I mentioned that I remember him in the late 70's as a Landlord at a pub in Eccleshall, which was at the Royal Oak in the High St. (I initially got this wrong as I thought that it was the Kings Arms, but I got confused as there quite a few "Royalist" pubs in Eccy.)
I got to thinking about past times when it seemed to be a quite common practice for ex footballers to join the licensed trade, although nowadays they don't really need to work once retired. Another Stoke player who became a publican was the late Gerry Bridgwood, who played for the club for several years as a midfielder under Tony Waddington. He became a landlord at the popular Telegraph on Wolverhampton Road, Stafford, and also at one time ran the Greyhound on the A34 at Yarlet.
I expect there are many more examples of this career path, though at the moment I can only think, not of footballers, but of the Darts players Eric Bristow and Maureen Flowers, at the Foaming Quart in Tean.

Harry Burrows had The Rising Sin in Scholar Green. Used to get in the odd time.

Amazing thing is Hurst could be found behind the bar pulling pints.
Can you imagine today ordering 'a pint of bitter and a lager and lime' from a bloke who had scored a hat trick in a World Cup Final a few short years earlier?
'Keep the change mate' !

I think the Royal Oak still use the reference "once owned by Geoff Hurst" in some of their promotional material. I suppose you can't blame them as not many pubs can say similar.

I used to go in the Fountain Head quite regularly in the early eighties, after work, especially on Friday. Not hugely busy, but at the time the "inn" place to go was the Roman Candle.

An unusual pub, a mate had it when it was Flickers, I used to work there sometimes when I was on leave, I assume it's still there unless they filled it with concrete, I'd love to have a wander around.

Canโt think of anything worse now than being in a crowded pub.

It was always our starting point, we used to park in the little car park out the back and use the entrance there, happy days
