www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53055256As someone who had the benefits of free school meals I have to say I applaud the efforts of his campaign. There are a multitude of reasons why a school meal is so vitally important to kids. In my case like many kids over the decades my school meals wouldn't have been so important had my old man chosen to spend his hard earned money on his family rather than himself. Well done Marcus

He's absolutely spot on. I know a head teacher who was so upset by a cock up on the vouchers during the May half-term , he personally went food shopping for multiple pupils and dropped food to their homes. Said how the hell will they cope in the summer , and Rashford has made the point eloquently and forcefully. Pity our shambles of a PM misses said point

Free School meals should be for all children regardless of income in state schools at all times.
It wouldn’t kill them to carry this on for all schools in the off terms too.
Incidentally you would be surprised how many kids who should receive school meals dont get them because for one reason or another the parents don’t apply. This has an impact on schools as they then don’t receive the pupil premium

It is so nice to see one of the younger football players with a social conscience and quite rightly applauded for his efforts. It is a shame that this day and age that some kids have to rely on a free voucher for food throughout the holidays, but,as felonious has said of his own experience, perhaps the parents could help out a bit more with thinking about their own kids instead of themselves sometimes. I know this is a contentious point and will be jumped on by some but personally I have always put my own kids before myself to ensure they were fed and clothed. Perhaps some may not need the latest phone/sky/Netflix etc subscription. puts tin hat on in anticipation

This has been one of the most uplifting stories to come out of the mess we are in at the moment. What an inspiration from a young footballer who has not forgotten his roots and is trying to do something positive for young people from similar backgrounds.

A thoroughly decent young man.
Let's hope he can succeed where most fail in pricking the conscience of Boris Johnson, this is a very real problem at the moment......

Principled politician: Bandgwagon jumping party: The tweet below was published on Sunday - the same day as Rashford's letter. Assuming parliament wasn't sitting on Sunday, it shows Starmer bringing up the issue before Rashford's intervention. No doubt Rashford's letter made it almost impossible for the government not to U-turn, but it's hardly a case Labour have been ignoring before he got involved.

Labour currently have a "sit back and assess" policy with everything. That's fine but at some point they will have to get off the fence and not just ride the popular waves......

He's done loads of other stuff too recently like learning sign language for a children's poetry competition. Have a look at the reply tweet he sent to Katie Hopkins if you get a couple of minutes. Top man Marcus.

This has an impact on schools as they then don’t receive the pupil premium This is particularly true for pupils in Reception and Key Stage 1 who now receive a free school meal anyway, so the parents don't see the need to apply. They don't realise that by applying the school gets an extra £1,350 to spend on the child.

And would you be prepared to vote for a party which promises tax raises to fund these kinds of initiatives? They are out there! This is the problem. It's very easy to say on so many of these issues, not quite so easy to vote for when push comes to shove.

I’ve always been moderately centre leaning left to right depending on what’s on offer. If what’s on offer is too far to the left people will move further right. Obviously the same in reverse Covid has proved the money is there. However that can be caveated with conversations the length of the country. “How will we pay for it” because we all know regardless of party in charge it has to be paid for

I think its great that the Govt has reversed its decision and its great the work that MR is doing
However, I think its quite unnerving that change has come about only because it's a high profile footballer.
Anybody other than a footballer or celebrity and this wouldn't have been reversed imho.

And there lies the fundamental problem You build a couple of million cheap to rent homes and you crash the housing market So both the tories and Labour for decades have only tinkered round the edges as they realise no one is going to vote for a party that plunges them into negative equity or robs thousands from there inheritance Me personally I don't know how you would solve it If you cap rents then a lot of private landlords will just sell lowering house prices and leave private renters potentially homeless A thankless task for the one with the guts to sort it out

That’s more important than the other two Negative equity isn’t that much of a problem if you can afford the mortgage. Negative equity with massive interest rates is a huge problem. Government should sort that Inheritance shouldn’t be a big issue if houses are affordable.
