In 86 West Germany were plodders but still reached the final. By the time they actually built a great side there was only one winner. There was the accusation that they fielded a weakish side v Denmark to avoid the big boys in one side of the draw and only beat Morocco by a late goal and Mexico on pens. They weren't great but didn't concede in the knockout stages and Rummenigge wasn't fit. Briegel was a great player. I have no problem with the weakish side thing. Sometimes it makes sense. Not entirely in the Corinthian spirit but there you go

30 years since Ireland won that penalty shootout v Romania. I thought Romania edged the game slightly but not really enough to say they should've won it. Immortalised in The Van. All of Ireland went crazy. Except Eamonn Dunphy.
In the second game of the day Schillachi scored a severely underrated goal. What a strike.
Some of the UK press had spent the weekend being disparaging about the England team. Ridiculously so in some quarters.

Speaking of The Van, Steve Staunton lost all his money investing in the Irish film industry.

Was that the Romania team of Maruis Lacatus and Gheoge Hagi? Or did they come later in94?
If so, great side and a great result for the Irish! O'leary with the winning Peno wasn't it

O'leary with the winning Peno wasn't it Lacatus defo played and scored one or two cracking goals, not sure about Hagi. Don’t think Lacatus played against Ireland which was obviously a big bonus for the Irish

I saw Steve Staunton on a train. Where were you going? To Stoke. From Euston. After the 1989 charity shield. The Liverpool squad were on it. I won tickets for the game in the daily mirror.

Hagi played, played well but Ireland kept close tabs on him and he just showed glimpses. Wasn't a great game. I was about 5 rows behind big Jack. Yep O'Leary took the pen, seemed a strange choice at the time but he nailed it.

Remember being very nervous throughout that match. Scifo was different class for Belgium, that strike that hit the post. We looked more of a threat when Steve Bull came on! Gascoigne starts that run and the rest is history. Lineker's face on the pile on and the look of agony on Preud'homme.
Butcher and Waddle's 'here we go' thing 😂 And Bobby Robson's little jig!

Quarter finals time. On this day 30 years 7 it was a pisser when Maradona missed his penno. 😁😁 Yugoslavia paid them tok much respect. They were a better side but didn't go for it properly
Me mate was at the Italy v Ireland game and remembers the thunderous rolling roar from the home crowd. Near the end of the game the ground was shaking. At full time Jack Charlton looked a bit pissed off. Italy were formidable. They hadn't conceded a goal. On the showing of 30/6/90 a stately procession to the final was in progress. What could go wrong?

30 years ago today since that game against Cameroon. After the Belgium game Howard Wilkinson told the players they had a bye in the quarter final. Hardest bye I've ever seen.
West Germany beat Czechoslovakia in the afternoon with a result that confirmed we wouldn't be reaching the final.
