Beat me to it there lordb. I didn't realise Robson was 33 in 1990. 1986 would have been his peak World Cup. Might be pushing it with this but I wonder if Maradona would have scored that 2nd goal if Robson had been in the way?! He wouldn't have been able stop Maradona. But his presence wouldn't have gone amiss. Dunno. He might have been quick enough and able to get his leg high enough to scythe him down on the halfway line like his replacement tried and failed to do.

Personally I thought he was a cracking player, combative, good all round but injury prone, probably because of how he played. Although he was a bit part player when Man Utd won that first Premier League title I was chuffed for him that he got a medal. Crap manager though, too much drinking culture in his blood. He was probably one of the last who didn't embrace the modern way of doing things and he was history as a boss.

Back to Italia 90 though. Not the exact date tonight but it was this corresponding Saturday evening that England hammered Holland 0-0! The game that Gascoigne announced his arrival as a star in the making. Lineker had an off night with Dave Bamber style finishing. And Stuart Pearce had the pub going nuts until we realised it was an indirect free kick.

Anyone watch 'One night in Turin' last night with Lineker, Terry Butch and Paul Parker? Quite interesting
Toto Schillaci looks younger now than he did in 1990
The challenge on poor old Cannigia in that first game is my favourite tackle ever π

Most memorable from this day 30 years ago is half time of Czechoslovakia v Austria and there was an ace interested with Paul Gascoigne. He was angry about the press and how obstructive they were. He spoke from the heart and voice qas quivering with emotion. It was great to see.

Was looking for a bar with a friend of mine in Sassari to watch it and a car pulled up full of Italian lads. We thought they wanted a fight but asked us to get in and took us to a members only football bar. Drank Moretti until we could manage no more and at the end of the night they refused to let us pay for anything.

I was born in 1980 and have never seen Scotland win a game at a major championship. Spain 82 was before my time and since then there was Sweden in 90 which I don't think was shown in England (unless my dad was sulking still about Costa Rica). We beat CIS in 92 but it was on same time as West Germany v Holland so that game was shown in England plus Swiss game in 96 was on same time as England v Holland. Mad really how things have changed when now you can watch any game from male or female world cup.

Can't remember who it was, keeper saved the original shot then the player wen't down when the nearest player was 2 yards away.

30 years since Paul Gascoigne introduced himself on the world stage. He was ace against Netherlands. Beating men and playing telling balls. The many doubts about his ability to influence big stages faded away. England played really well. The big factor was the huge dramatic change in playing with Wright as a sweeper. (remember them?π) The next day Bob Robson said they'd decided to play a sweeper against Netherlands before leaving England but that's hard to believe. They didn't experiment with it in any friendlies. For a 0-0 it was all triumphant. And however pleasing it was you can't help wishing Pearce's late goal had stood. Watched first half in the bird in hand and second half in the black lion.
Scotland beat Sweden. Only saw highlights butbit looked like a good game. Andy Roxburgh with his tartan scarf. They nearly blew it. A they had do was avoid defeat against Brazil in the next game. Piece of piss!
In the afternoon Brazil trudged to a dull 1-0 win over Costa Rica. It was wank. No sexy samba style skills there. Didn't stop the commentators shooting their load each time they took a goal kick though.

The Brazilian team of '90 must be one of the most prosaic teams to pull on the famous yellow shirt Can only vaguely recall one Careca goal as a highlight? I found the team of '94 to be almost as dull, but at least their pragmatism had an efficacy. Still not sure what to make of 2014's lot...π

But in 94 they can point to the fact they lifted the trophy but that priority in itself contracts their legend. In 1974 they smacked of violent desperation. As for 2014, they were wrong in the head. The obsession with Neymar before the semi was ridiculous. They meant to exorcise the ghosts of 1930. They emerged with a deeper trauma.

Yeah that was absolutely ridiculous. The way they carried on with Luiz walking out onto the pitch holding Neymarβs shirt I actually thought I had missed something and Neymar had died! I have never wanted Germany to win a game so much as I did that game after all that pantomime.

30 years ago today Ireland drew 0-0 with Egypt. Paddy Bonner spent six minutes of the game holding I wonder if this game was a factor in the backpass rule changes two years later.
In 76/77 we played Middlesbrough and they backpassed from all over the pitch. Must've been a Jack Charlton thing. It as Greenhoff's last game for us I think. πͺπͺ
