My great nan used to make me damson jam, I can’t find it anywhere in shops it guts me Bet there’s loads on Amazon? I got some a few years ago after not having it for years, I asked my lad if he wanted anything when I went the shop and he said "can you get some more of that Damm Sun jam" I suppose that is how it's spelt to be fair, I still take the piss about it even now tho

Ah ! Thx, mate. The soothsayers speak the truth about the wait, then. Looks like a long haul. Bugger! My great nan used to make me damson jam, I can’t find it anywhere in shops it guts me Same here. It's really surprising, isn't it? It's so traditional, so I can't think why it's so hard to find. My grandmother never made jam, but she used to stew them and then make giant damson flans, and they were delicious - after one slice you had to keep going back for more and could never stop eating them. They were great with her rice pudding, too. The one simple thing that would make damsons have an immediate resurgence in popularity would be if Delia had a new cookery prog on TV and featured them - 'the Delia effect' - the few shops that sold them would sell out instantly and there would be a nationwide calling for them to be widely stocked...... Come on, Deels, where are ya, where are ya? Let's be havin' yooooo!

You cheeky pig, JD. One has never brawled in the street in one's life - one raised eyebrow from moi and the CM rangers go in like the SAS Most 'umble apologies, m'lady. One of your class doesn't brawl in the street. Roll in the gutter, maybe. Cavort in the hay fields, possibly. But brawl in the street? Never. I believe you select a champion to do that sort of thing for you. Or do you ....? Have you ever been known as Mademoiselle Maupin or Agnes Hotot??? That's more like it. ( The first bit.) I'll have to get back to you on the other stuff, JD, and haven't had time to look at the link yet but will do so ASAP --- I'm busy doing damsons stuff at the mo. NB: I thought you were talking about cooking stews there for a minute...... Agnes Hotpot.... I know, I know. Should've gone to Specsavers....... Tarrarabit........

Not one close but next time I’m up Hanley I usually park there so I will nip in. Have a feeling it won’t be the same though 😞

My great nan used to make me damson jam, I can’t find it anywhere in shops it guts me Bet there’s loads on Amazon? Correct! Right. Job done, Badge. Partially, anyway. Just in Az, frantically buying another few tubs of suet-ball birdy food as the little dears have already scoffed the lot bought (for the first time - BIG success) a couple of weeks ago - they LOVE 'em - see the Sweet & Fluffy thread for details, folks - and was just about to check out & suddenly decided to go on a dammo search. Quite a few jams & preserves, etc., came up, incl. this one, which had excellent F/B. They're in a pack of six, but will last ages, so no prob. That's the good news. The bad news is that they're temporarily out of stock, but never mind, eh?! They'll send 'em when they get some, oh………. which I s'pose means it might be a wait for the autumn crops and then them therrrrre 'arrrrrvesters to get theirrrr fingerrrrs out --- still, at least we've found a few options: smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ABC55OS/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

Not one close but next time I’m up Hanley I usually park there so I will nip in. Have a feeling it won’t be the same though 😞 Oh, it definitely WON'T be the same, more's the pity! When I was at junior school my little best pal lived on a farm near Woodseaves and I often went to stay there for the weekend; her mum was a proper jolly, rotund farmer's wife, like in the comics, and was always making jams and pickles, etc., and I was gutted when their family emigrated to Oz as '£10 Poms'. Her mum's raspberry jam was out of this world, and even after all this time I can still vividly picture the jars and remember its wonderful taste. Another friend gave me a jar of her home-made Rhubarb & Ginger Jam (which I'd never heard of before) a few years ago, and it was sublime!

'Ow kind. Thanks VM indeed, Jeezy. The thing is, I virtually NEVER eat jam! Very occasionally get a bit of a craving for a French-style brekky, with baguette, butter & strawgog jam (usually when we've got a couple of baguettes in), but that's it, really. It's just been all the search for, and discussions about, damsons on 'ere this past few days & realising that having them in jam is unfortunately just about the only way you can get them these days.

I don't know how anyone could ever eat bought C/Sauce (actually, I shouldn't judge b/c I've never tried bought stuff ), but homemade is scrummy. I make it at Xmas but never have it with my Xmas lunch (Crispy does) as I don't like it with a meal like that, but on toast it's yum so I make a giant amount of it - you can only get fresh cranbos at Xmas - and separate it up into freezer boxes. Luckily it freezes perfectly, as do the raw berries. Result:

Sorry to disappoint you all but my silence has a simple and boring explanation.
My I Pad battery was flat, and I got engrossed in a book and cooking a Moussaka !!
So the G&T. A veRy nice colour and tastes as you would expect like a flavoured gin. Not very good neat but with tonic a nice summer drink. 🥳🥃
Tonight May Try the gin soaked berries with Ice Cream.
Also made my second batch of DIY Oatcakes. Really good.

At a guess I'd say you go with the latter version. Am I right or am I right???

Correction to my last post; Just tried a small liquor glass of neat Strawberry Gin and it was ok, but could not drink a lot of it. The Moussaka is definitely no potatoes but Aubergines and a “Cheating” sauce using Greek yogurt, Dijon Mustard and Feta Cheese.! If this was in Athens or the Islands I would be deported 😀⚓️ Edit. Forgot a egg in the sauce! Must be the gin🥳

Also made my second batch of DIY Oatcakes. Really good. My tipple of lemon sherbert gin last night must still be affecting me. I read that as:
"Also made my second bath of DIY Oatcakes"
Nowt like making 'em in bulk & freezing them. Or maybe that's what a night on the gin requires, a bath full of oatcakes.

Over the years I’ve tried all manner of making fruity spirits. Raspberry vodka and gin, ditto blackberry and strawberry, blackberry whisky, cherry brandy and sloe vodka. But by far the best and most consistent is sloe gin. With all of them the boozy fruit can be used with ice cream or made into trifle or crumble dessert. This year I’m going to try Honey Berry Vodka. I’ll report back.

Down in Devon there must be lots of Sloes if you know how to recognise them, and they probably are ready earlier than up here in the freezing depths of N Staffs. 😀 They are quite abundant in hedge rows here around about Sept/Oct. This year because I was late from returning from abroad my daughter froze some for me. I made the gin with thawed frozen berry’s, which were a little mushy, and the result was excellent. Due to Lockdown I am not abroad as usual and so hoping to make Damson Gin, but will certainly be doing Sloes in Sept. 🤪🥃⚓️

Because of their tough skins they don’t get eaten by birds or bugs. Freezing them is an excellent way because the skins break down when thawing saving the laborious job of pin pricking every berry. We do have loads of sloe hedgerows in our parish but strangely not all bare fruit for some reason.

I am lucky to live in a village/area where neighbours and people in the local pubs are always exchanging or even giving away produce, or mending roofs etc. so hope to get some somewhere. I suspect that Damson trees are possibly not as popular as they used to be in my parents time. ?

Down here the new kids on the block are honey berries. Very similar looking to blueberries but much sharper. Hence they make a super not too sweet jam using 1 : 0.66 berries to sugar proportion, a bit less if you like a sharper jam. My son in law started growing them couple of years ago at his pick your own farm in Yealmpton and this year is his first harvest. They have nearly finished this year as they harvest May-June. Scones, Devon clotted cream and honey berry jam.......heaven,and I’m not watching my waist line with all the weight I lost last year with the cancer

Nice one LL. Never heard of honey berries before. Sounds like something Mrs Q would like seeing as she likes blueberries (which are about the only fruit I've tried that I don't like).
Chinese origin? Hmmm. Make sure you quarantine that jam for 14 days,
In other news, Q is off the pop (and gin !!) again. Follow-up scan at hospital this morning after the last kidney stone has revealed yet another of the little bl33ders. My kidneys must look flipping pomegranates.

Now I wouldn’t normally touch gin but my Mrs has been drinking it by the gallon since furlough, mainly rhubarb AND ginger🤮. She did however by a pink grapefruit one last week which she hates, luckily for me it’s the only gin I’ve ever enjoyed. Just have it with standard tonic, any recommendations for a flavoured tonic or stick with the standard? Cheers👍🏻 Russian Wild berry made by schweppes hard to get hold of but very nice indeed especially with lillet blanc. www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/31219/lillet-blanc-schweppes-russian-wild-berry
