Lockdown boredom has got me doing and trying quite a few things of late.
I thought I would give this a go. Has any body else tried it ?
Made two half litres and already it looks good after only 24 hrs. Thought I should leave it for a couple of weeks at least.?
Once drained off any tips for the berry’s ?

A couple of years ago my cousin made some damson gin using the damsons from the tree in her garden - my wife said it was absolutely delicious ! (I can't drink due to health problems, unfortunately).
My cousin actually then used the damsons in a highly intoxicating damson crumble. I suppose you could put the strawberries in a potentially lethal trifle but it would probably need a health warning !

(Decades, I bet. Drat it! ) I think JD and Leedsy - (come to think of it, Leedsy's been very quiet for ages..... hope he didn't dig up a medieval plague pit and have a nasty 'do'....) - and/or their other halves have a fondness for flavoured gins - I'm sure they've both posted in the past about having bottles of rhubarb gin and being very partial to it....... I've also got a recipe for Gin & Tonic Cheesecake, but I've never made it yet! (And you know I'm still off the sauce. ) Come in, Leedsy!

I make Sloe gin every autumn and hope to make some damson this year. I made this Strawberry gin in two halves so that I can try one early which I imagine will be like a flavoured gin, and keep the second half for some months and hope it will be more like a liquor. The strawberrys soaked in gin in gin I thought maybe a jelly. 🥳🥃

I've also got a recipe for Gin & Tonic Cheesecake, but I've never made it yet! (And you know I'm still off the sauce. ) Come in, Leedsy! Yes, I do like a flavoured gin. Not rhubarb though. Shudders. As I've pointed out in the past, it's poisonous (as well as tasting disgusting). Or at least I've convinced Mrs that it is, even if it's only the leaves that contain dangerous levels of oxalic acid.
Mrs Q, however, likes a drop of rhubarb & ginger gin. Or any other gin. Or anything at all containing alcohol.
My personal preferences run to elderflower, lime, and lemon sherbert and parma violet. Anything with a bit of sharpness so damson sounds like it would be marvellous.
The used strawberries? Good question. I've never made my own, but got a mate who has. I'll ask him what he did with his. Not so sure gin flavour would work well in a trifle. Vanilla custard & gin? Sounds a bit exotic to me. I'd have a crack at strawberry flapjacks maybe. Gin works better for me with savoury than with sweet.
Young damson trees are tricky beasts. We used to have one when I was a nipper. It was already 50+ years old when we moved in so it would fruit most years but our attempts to get young trees to fruit always failed. The old tree was also great for climbing and I could just about get from there onto the shed roof, then onto the neighbour's shed roof and then onto their garden fence. Then the wall around the boiler of Cadburys' social club hall and from there down onto the coke pile. And then onto a walloping and being sent to bed.
Oh, and I couldnt post on a gin thread without mention my latest discovery - Morrisons' cheapo mixed berry pop. Two 2-litre bottles for 90p. Tastes like vimto. Tastes even better when a splash is added to gin. And even better again when taken with codeine. I have a strained ACL (did it bloody gardening!) which is incredibly painful, But a bit of gin, Morrison's pop and codeine sorts the pain out for a while.

On the basis that one can never have too many flapper recipes, JD, I shall keep a note of that one - thank you! Haven't studied it yet but after one very brief glimpse it looks like some Tezzers do which are rather nice...... 'ang about....... Yep, here we are.... Now I wouldn’t normally touch gin but my Mrs has been drinking it by the gallon since furlough, mainly rhubarb AND ginger🤮. She did however by a pink grapefruit one last week which she hates, luckily for me it’s the only gin I’ve ever enjoyed. Just have it with standard tonic, any recommendations for a flavoured tonic or stick with the standard? Cheers👍🏻

Aldi and Lidl did passable standard tonics of their own (possibly the same stuff) but seem to have stopped lately. Could try it with bitter lemon?

Ah yes never thought of bitter lemon, nice enough with standard stuff but I’ll get a bitter lemon see what it’s like. Nice one. Used to have the odd vodka and lilt 🤣 that was quite nice when I was 18!

I'd have to give the grapefruit stuff a swerve, though --- grapefruit in any form makes my fingers/knuckles very painful - the only time I've ever had any sort of achy trouble with my hands is if I've had grapefruit or juice, so I have to avoid it like the plague.

GASP! D'you mean you don't like flappers, JD? Chuff and Dees and I love 'em! I LOVE flappers, Murph. Used to have one every day for elevenses. But I've found since my last bout of kidney stones, they now give me horrendous indigestion.
And oats are much better used in oatcakes :-)
If ever oatcakes start giving me indigestion, it's euthanasia time.

I most certainly didn't do what Brian May did (whatever bizarre gardening accident that was). And never have. Apart from pouring evostik in my mate's guitar pickups to see if we could get the "Brian May sound" out of it. It didn't work. Brian Eno, possibly, but not Brian May.
I was kneeling down stapling netting to fence posts, turned to get a staple ... my body and upper leg turned, my lower leg didn't. Grind, crunch, pop yeeeeowww! Fell over & the grind, crunch happened again. Yeowwwww!
Head swimming, spots before me eyes. And all whilst Mrs Q was at work so she wasn't there to administer first aid (or more likely laugh at me).
I should be put forward for the George Cross, Distinguished Flying Medal and Order Of The Bath (with bar). Not only did I undergo this without a single curse escaping my lips, I gave it 10 minutes rest and then carried on & finished the netting.

It's good but I think it's worth trying Aldi/Lidl's own version at some point, especially if there's one of their places close to you. They both used to do their own version of basic tonic water in tins, really nice (to my taste) and a great price, then they both gradually put the price up before Lidl stopped selling it at all followed by Aldi doing the same about 6 months later, not seen it in tins since in either shop. Lidl still sell it in 'big' bottles but I find with the bigger tonic bottles the tonic seems to go flat too quickly. Got me wanting one now and I've been more or less off the booze for a month or so

Thanks for the tip about the other brands, and I agree that with bigger bottles the tonic seems to go flat too quickly. PS: If you want to be off the booze, Eels, try having two burst ulcers you didn't know you'd got..... the result has been 10 months off the juice for me now. It isn't that I can't drink or am not allowed to - it's only a psychological thing, but I just can't bear the thought of it. What a criminal waste!

Roll in the gutter, maybe. Cavort in the hay fields, possibly. But brawl in the street? Never. I believe you select a champion to do that sort of thing for you.

Maybe after all these years on it I'm finally full
