It’s safe to say we’ll be bowling at some point this afternoon.
Never understood why we always struggle so much against Holder. Anything he bowls on a length or shorter will be going over the stumps, our batsmen just don’t seem comfortable leaving the ball against him.
Let’s hope Stokes can somehow get us up somewhere close to 250.

Pope can be an excellent player for England for years to come, but if he keeps playing with too much bottom hand he'll always be susceptible to getting out caught behind like he did today.....

I don't think we've played badly, it's not like they've all nicked off, but I do think Stokes really dug a hole for himself batting first in overcast, stop start conditions with minimal real batting preparation. It was probably the "brave" option, but doesn't look like the right one.
We need to scramble to about 200-250 as in the practice games you feel.

I think the Windies have bowled really well, Holder gets better and better to be fair to him. 220 would be a competitive score in these conditions, forecast is a lot better for the next 3 days though so we'd need to have them 3/4 down by close of play for not very many. It's a really good contest......

Was just looking at the prospects for spin later on and came stumbled across Moeen Ali's record at the Rose Bowl.
2 tests, both against India and 17 wickets at 15.87. That's up there with Woakes' record at Lord's.

That's up there with Woakes' record at Lord's. Mo’s record in home tests is superb. But, too early for him to make a comeback in the test side. Frankly, I think it’s a bit of a bonus that he is back in contention for a place after missing the best part of a year. So I’m happy with the selection of Dom Bess. He deserves a spell to see what he can do.

Some shots after Lunch. 200 and we're really in the game.

Scramble up to 250 and I think it’s competitive although the weather seems to be improving for batting tomorrow

Time for Archer to actually bat like he can.

Great bowling from Holder getting Stokes and Buttler. 200 looks a long way away all of a sudden.....

An unusually long tail for England in this game😟 Hopefully it’ll result in a fresher more varied bowling attack

I think we'll be needing vintage Jimmy in action after tea to get us back into this one... if we get to tea that is.

5 for Holder. Archer's batting has gone massively backwards since he broke through to the England team......

Right, need 4 minimum in this session? 204 is 20/30 runs short of par I reckon. 4 wickets at least before the weather improves tomorrow.......

As Boycs likes to say - let’s judge after both sides have batted. We are going to have to bowl well though. It could be an Interesting final session to the day.

Win the toss, bat first. Tried and tested since the dawn of time. I'd have had a bowl.😄

Not a good day at all, pretty woeful effort with the bat, albeit against some excellent bowling and then pretty average with ball.
West Indies well on top at the moment and will have decent conditions to bat in tomorrow. If they can bat for the day tomorrow they should go on to the win the game.

Need to get them about 120 for 4 at lunch to make it all square. Any less than 3 wickets and the Windies are on top

Not looking good at all this.
Broady has been extremely vocal about his dropping as well.

Not looking good at all this. Broady has been extremely vocal about his dropping as well. It has looked more like a pitch for Broad than either Wood or Archer since the first ball bowled. It is a bit worrying that less than 45 minutes into the day and Bess has come on to bowl. It is beginning to look like a typical recent England performance in the first Test of a series/tour. Bat poorly in the first innings and then play catch up for the rest of the Test.

Desperately need a breakthrough here. Blackwood, who normally excels against us could really take the game away from us if he gets his normal 50 off 50.

Not looking good at all this. Broady has been extremely vocal about his dropping as well. I had a listen to his interview. As ever, when you selected quotes it sounds like he is in a bit of a huff. When you listen all the way through, it is more balanced. Yes he is disappointed, but he understands why the selection was made and he isn’t the only disappointed bowler and he’s raring to go.
