It’s very hard to see anything other than a Pakistan victory from here. After such a good morning session we’ve managed to pretty much lose the game in the two afternoon sessions. Root’s captaincy was once again shown up to be pretty atrocious. His decision to bowl himself and Bess after lunch undid the previous two hours excellent work in the space of twenty minutes. He’s had the gig long enough now to able to manage games much better than that. Our batting, Pope aside, was just abject again. Burns, Sibley, Stokes and Root all getting out to pretty innocuous balls. Have to say though that I’ve been really impressed with Pakistan. They’ve got some fantastic talent in their side and they look well up for it. I just couldn’t believe his decision to bowl himself and pretty much gift them 30-40 runs after lunch when we had them on the back foot. He could easily have put on Wokes and Archer there and then and bought Jimmy and Broad on for the new ball. His decision was mistifying. Great player but not a great captain.

Why do England always struggle in the first test of a new series?
Their recent record is woeful.

These 2 have to go to put on at least 100 to even think about staying in this game.
What a difference in the reactions and energy levels of the players.
England players couldn't even be arsed get off their backsides when Pope's 50 came up.
Pakistan players were on their feet for every boundary in their innings.

Probably a bit embarrassed to applaud anything with the position they’re in. But still it’s not a very positive image to portray

Pope gone. Not much batting left could get a bit messy...

Our No.6 and No.7 batsmen have played between them 137 Test Innings and have 2 centuries between them, 1 each.
What are the selectors thinking?......that they will come good eventually?
Well the time has come because they both need one today if we are to compete in this game.
Buttler exceeded his test average now...so fingers crossed

Woakes was good coming in at number 8 or 9 but being moved up has seemingly heaped pressure on him to become a second all rounder when in reality he's a bowler who can bat a bit. Anyway, hope this is one of those days where he sticks around and scores a few.

They over estimate their capabilities and underestimate their opponents. I’d love to see who is doing our performance/opposition analysis. We never seem to have a plan for batsmen in the first test of a series or based on previous meetings. Watching us plug around the wicket to Masood yesterday was seriously annoying when he’s nowhere near as certain from over the wicket. Blackwood, a guy we always seem to have problems against bowling on a length we finally worked out will miss a full straight ball because of his technique. But only after he won a game in Southampton. Not realising Shadab Khan always looks for quick singles and bringing up the field a yard before he’s taken about 15 of them.

Incidentally, Buttler averages 42 at 6 too which is also where he was batting when his hundred came. Fingers crossed!

He's had 58 Test Innings so he's not exactly starting out.

Buttler has batted well this morning.
A lot more needed though!

I think we'll see a few changes for the next match.
Leach in for Bess Crawley in for a bowler And Wood in for another bowler.
I can't confidently predict what bowlers will be left out but think Jimmy will be one. I could be massively wrong, just a hunch.

If Root was replaced as Captain, who should get the job? I'm not sure Stokes is our man, all rounders have enough on their plates as it is.

Not good enough from Buttler....again.....how many times?
If Buttler is our best No.6 option we are in big trouble
You can blame the top order all you like, but that is what a good No.6 is for.
See Steve Waugh, Chanderpaul, Allan Border. Players who could dig the team out of trouble.
There have been flamboyant No.6s De Villiers, Lloyd, Laxman but they all had averages of over 50 not low 30s

Didn't realise that Mohammad Amir had retired from Test Cricket at the age of 27
What a talent, and what a wasted career.

Waste of time this is, prodding about waiting to be dismissed. Broad please smash a few or else I'll lose the will the live.

If we lose this, I'm blaming Root. I know our Batting & Bowling have been poor, but bowling himself & Bess when we had them in a little trouble was criminal.

It totally got their eye in for the new ball. Why we didn't bowl Archer and Woakes and keep it tight I'll never know. Like I said last night, there's so many mistakes to go into right now from selection to tactics and everything in between.

I don't get what Archer is trying to do here, it's like he bowls without a plan sometimes. Maybe I'm expecting too much from him but at least bowl with some pace and accuracy for a while like Shah did for them would be nice.

This interesting article from Cricket Monthly suggests it’s about par; 29% of slip catches are dropped, the above stat puts Stokes at 30%. I guess it’s a bit disappointing as Stokes would expect to be better than average. But it’s not bad. Just average.

Big spell and hour in the test match this is. Woakes looking like the man if anyone.
Edit, then Root takes him off.

I don't think you can drop Woakes or Broad and like I've said previously, I don't think Archer is doing enough to justify his place in the team. Stokes' 4 overs tonight was the kind of spell Archer should've been producing but I'm not seeing it.

If he's not capable of regularly putting in 3/4 over spells of 90mph he'll never cement his position in the team game after game. Depending on the pitch I can see Curran and Wood for Archer and Jimmy next game......
