I was there earlier in the week, but not for the final. A fiver treble on three favourites used to return enough to pay for the beer all night..happy days!

Me and the missus had season tickets for the whole tournament in 82 which was one of the greatest events I've ever witnessed. It had it all, from watching the early rounds in front of a sparse crowd, right through to the drunken chaos of the final between Bristow and Deller. Memories include seeing a very pissed Jocky Wilson fall off stage, local lad Les Capewell standing at the bus stop in Longton after an early exit, still wearing his darts shirt (darts in the pocket). Tony Brown refusing to sign someones programme because Alun Evans had signed it before. Watching Paul Lim hit two consecutive 26's in the first round and in the silence following, hearing some local wag shout out 'fer Christ sake chalk my name up for the next game'. The tension of the final was frankly greater than any footy game I've ever been to. Tables full of blokes so pissed that they could hardly walk and not one of them sitting on the fence over who they supported. I saw blokes jumping on the tables, falling off and in the ensuing chaos, losing their shoes which were flung god knows where by their mates. And the most unique thing about it was that I saw no actual violence and those who had been screaming for Bristow to win were chanting Deller's name over and over at the end as they soaked each other in beer. Yeah I was there

They all used to stay in the Crown Hotel saw Leighton reese jockey wilson and Bristow all playing cards in there throwing money on the table like it meant nothing to them.. Got to say though Leighton reese and jockey were very welcoming had plenty of time for a chat..

Younger viewers of darts forget that the trebles nowadays are 15% bigger than what they were back then and tournaments were few and far between. Players like Jocky and Bristow, Lowe etc were so far ahead. You wouldnts see 100+ averages like you do now all the time if the boards were the same and you didnt have the amount of tournaments that you do now. Jocky Wilson Said is a great documentary. As a side note i could listen to Bobby George talk all day long.

I can remember watching a darts final in an Edinburgh pub when JW was involved, early eighties, people were as passionate about the darts as they were the football, probably cos he was up against a sassenach, it ran deep up there lol. Think it was against John Lowe, we kept our allegiances to ourselves, the odds weren't great

This takes me back
Went to loads of evenings back in the early 80s and loved every minute of it
Typical Stoke though, we had something special going and jollees shuts down causing the tournament to be moved away.....sigh
Fantastic era

If you want to see the original programme, it's on youtube. BBC seems to have taken it off.

Always admired John Lowe and there's a belting Muhammad Ali story in his autobiography, excerpt can be read free on Google books . Recounts two meetings with MA and just a great story , I won't ruin it by doing so here

Somewhere in the late 80s Stoke seems to have not had the investment it was due.

Was the Highlight when I was in my teens. Used to go on a Saturday night as was a sea of girlies and was a really shabby looking hotel that would serve anyone nearby. I think was the last time I was in Longton.

Also remember having a tape from Pete Bromley junior( as he called himself back then) from Introspective.
