For those a little further away, the chip shop in madeley by the pool is top notch I've not long moved to baldwins gate. Not sure if there's more than one chippy in Madeley (?) But if we're talking about the same one I've been told (I've not been) its expensive and the portions are shite??? Only the one, but 1 large portion of chips will do 3 of us (2 adults and a teenager) so no issues from me.

'Ang on a minute --- --- so are football clubs. I'd like to ask, y'know - for the sake of friendly and polite interest, as no-one has mentioned it yet - which footie club do you support? Go on, tell us - you know you can trust us - after all, you've already found out how nice and exceptionally kind, friendly, generous and obliging we are, so there's nothing to worry about. PS: Having said that, if it's a London Club with, appropriately, the word 'arse' in its name, I think I can safely say that you might be in for a slightly bumpier ride from now on, at least from one or two of us. And I shall possibly no longer be offering to post you a copy of the Sennell when it resumes featuring house sales. I’m guessing Stoke as his name is Muggleton! Then again just checked wiki and he’s been at no less than 15 clubs in his career!!!! The dirty Tomcat 😉 Haha, username's a hangover from Champ Manager - the only Stoke player from that era I can remember. My team is Coleraine (NI) though I've been to a few Stoke games on previous visits.

Back to the oatcake situation, just seen on Sentinel website, povey oatcakes have bought high Lane oatcakes... And he’s promised not to use Poveys oatcakes. Is that because he knows Poveys are the worst oatcakes around or is it just a bare faced lie to get the regulars on side? I’m going for the latter!

Whilst I've never met the bloke I've been told that he's a cock, in that he tried to trademark a picture of a kiln and threatened to take another oatcake shop to court as they also used a picture of a kiln on their wrapper.

My local chippy 'Ye olde chippy' on the meir hay estate longton is a top chippy. The fish are massive and cooked to order so it fresh and piping hot. 👍
Also got flames, new chop suey bar, dominos and papa johns all close by.

Anyone who makes an oatcakes as bad as north staffs needs locking up under the trades description act. Never had poveys but know a few guys who have, and they say they are garbage. Ill stick with Foleys.

Of this mb, not the city Have done bits and pieces of work in the general area on and off for years, and moving at some stage was always on the cards. Joined here looking for info as it seemed the best bet (if there's anywhere else shout away and I'll have a look). Turned out I'd joined years ago for the sane reason, but it fell through before I'd actually posted anything. Buying a house in a recession is a long(ish) term investment as I wouldn't fancy selling one anytime soon, but beyond that I'll take it as it comes. 😁

Ill stick with Foleys. Foley is finest Oatcake emporium in this fair city if you ask me. Open again tomorrow too if my sources are to be believed. By God I've missed those circular discs of rolled oats emanating from Neck End. During lockdown I've fluctuated between High Lane, King Street, and those weird Aunt Sarah ones you seem to only be able to get from butchers, with varying degrees of success. Thankfully though, Foley are back once again (like a renegade master).

Never seen a food outfit with so many 5 star reviews!. Do they do mail order? I know Poveys do, my Dad used to send me some (not Poveys) that he got in B&M in Biddulph. The Welsh haven't got anything that comes remotely close.

The Oatcake printed edition did an "oatcakes with vindaloo" thing in one of the early editions, I never knew if they were taking the piss or not but it sounded alright so I gave it a go I usually stick them on a tin plate/bowl in the oven with some butter on top then cover them in tin foil. Fantastic

Fantastic Going to hold my hands up here, we use pataks sauce, its just much easier, stick it in the slow cooker with a joint of pork for around 4-5hours👌 sorry for moving off topic😊

Haha, username's a hangover from Champ Manager - the only Stoke player from that era I can remember. My team is Coleraine (NI) though I've been to a few Stoke games on previous visits. Well well! Murph? MURPH? Sort this geezer out will ya🙄 Roger Wilco, Badge. I'm on the case. Y'see, the thing is …… this is what I was thinking, eg. 'put yerself in Muggles's position'. You're due to move house to another area with your job, but you have no existing connections there - so how are you going to quickly make friends with the natives and pick their brains re. areas to live? How do you manage to quickly & easily connect with a load of chappies in an area you don't know? Where and how are you going to find and contact all these total strangers and ask them for a load of info? And possibly needing to never reveal who and where you are? Right - brilliant. You decide on a Football Club in the area (naturally the bigger and higher in the ranks the Club is, the better, even if they are on a 'temporary slump'), then find their on-line MB and get in on that. Register yourself, post a thread to introduce yourself briefly and ask 'em a few relevant Qs and see how many reply. Simplezzzzz. No need to tell them where you're living at present, nor indeed - and possibly especially not - to reveal which Football Club you support - after all, even if some folks don't actually go to footie matches most of them have at least a family or geographical affinity to one particular club or another and they often similarly can't stand other clubs - soooooooo, how you tread could be a bit dicey and you keep shtum unless grilled. So - the plot is blown. And it's a B.G.J. to know that Muggles's favoured footie club is not one based daaaahhhn saaaaaf, in the smoke, with the postcode N5 1BU. Slan!

The older Longton High School was on Sandon Road and the oldest Longton High School was, I think, on Trentham Road. One of the best oatcake shops was at an end terrace house near the junction of Trentham Road and Lightwood Road. Steaming oatcakes and Pikelets available at twopence each. Only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday mornings. Long gone, unfortunately.

I used to walk past it on a Sunday morning on the way back from St Gregory's church and the smell was delicious. If we had been especially "good" that week as a treat we would pop in and buy half a dozen oatcakes and a couple of pikelets for "second breakfast".

I just remember the smell of the steaming oatcakes and pikelets piled up on the counter. I think there were quite a few similar shops around at the time. It was always a treat for me when I came back to Longton to visit relatives when a visit to this shop was a "must". I even spread the oatcake culture back to Stockport where I was working at the time.
