I'm sure you are right. I was attempting a joke. Of course if I was a snob I might have said somewhere like Nantwich. If I came back to the area though I would probably head for Eccleshall. I lived in Eccleshall for a while. Long ago now but I loved it. Some great pubs locally back then. It looks a nice spot alright mate. Too small/quiet for me though.

Renting definitely an option and nudging towards it at the minute. Find the cheap rentals a bit depressing looking and would begrudge paying the going rate for the nicer looking ones, but might be the compromise that's needed for a couple of years til things settle down. That bit along the canal in Hanley looks interesting alright, though regeneration schemes in Stoke don't have a great track record, and would worry about the sustainability of a new community like that. Could end up a dumping ground if they can't shift what they've built. Would also resent paying some spiv speculator for the privilege of living in his flat. Will take a closer look along the canal. Parking not being a nightmare is also a must, so most terraces could be ruled out. Work long hours and need to know I'll get parked when I'm the last one home in the street. So a 2 bed flat with allocated parking by the canal could be the job. Will do some sums re renting/buying. In the meantime you could always contact a few of the local Estate Agents, give them a spec and let them do the looking for you. Their wwws do contain details of the properties they're selling, so you can still view them very easily on line. Some of them do rentals as well as sales. I'll PM you a few + their www links. You said you're moving to Stoke for work reasons, so I don't know how familiar you already are with the area, if at all? Also not sure about the current lockdown & how far folks can drive or for what purposes etc. yet, but when it all gets less restricted you could maybe visit & stay over for a weekend and have a drive round to see what you think of the various places and their respective watering holes. Great info, thanks mate. I know the geography of Stoke reasonably well, but have only ever passed through for a day or 2 on the beer previously, and never paid much attention or thought seriously about it as a place to live. Can get for a lockdown walkabout alright, and a pint when it's allowed. Thanks again for the info - it's really decent of you.

Kidgrove and Alsager are both good towns both have railway stations very local and both have very close access to the d road and M6 and both are full of good pubs and food outlets I know it's north but both would fit your budget although Alsager is far more expensive but although in Cheshire it pisses the fuck out of the locals that they have a Stoke on Trent post code.

I spent most of my childhood in Eccy. Nice village with lots of character. Whenever I've gone back there it feels that I've never been away.

Looks a nice place alright, but not somewhere I'd move with no connections as too small, insular and Tory for me. I'd imagine these are pro's for those who from there, but not for me.

How about a two bed apartment on Lock 38. Right next to the canal and loads of parking. Also next to A500. Short stroll along canal to Stoke and Hanley. I lived at Lock 38 from 2010 - 2013 before I fucked off to that London. Nice development with ample parking etc and majority were buy-to-let properties that were mainly rented by Bet365/Vodafone/Phones4u employees. Towards the end of my time there however it really had started to wane as the city council/Brighter Futures began renting from private landlords and putting drug-dependant scumbags in them. Had a couple of high-value parcels stolen and the week before I moved out a tenant set one of the apartments a couple of floors below on fire. Not sure what it's like now but every time I drive past there's loads of for sale signs at the entrance. Maybe that tells its own story...

This is the sort of local knowledge you don't get in an estate agent's brochure. Will take it off the list.

Full of people who are friendly, polite and helpful.... certainly not the place that anyone from out of the area would want to move to Small, insular and Tory + friendly, polite and helpful (generally) describes Stoke / Newcastle nowadays! Fair points😁, but it's a matter of degrees - there's being part of a relatively small city which has elected Tory MPs less often than most places in my lifetime, and there's bring in a goldfish bowl of a village that's stick on to be Tory long after I'm gone. As I said, these are positives for some people, but not for me.

Anyone got a view (good bad or indifferent on Porthill, Wolstanton or Hartshill).
Someone mentioned Hartshill Rd being rough, but know very little about the rest.

Based on what you've said pal Westbury Park is seriously worth considering. You'll easily get a nice place with the budget you have, plus its right on the doorstep of the m6, 500, a34....
Seabridge, great boozer, Westbury tavern, gatehouse (good boozer but a bit rough)

Try Caverswall, a few minutes to the A34, lovely area but not sure what prices are like, there’s also Blythe Bridge.

I can advocate the move from Caverswall to Hartshill was without doubt the best decision I’ve ever made. Central to pretty much all towns, right by all the major roads you need, absolutely loads of pubs and a great community spirit. Moved from Caverswall as it was the opposite to what I just explained.

And Penkhull. Although the pubs have taken a bit of a dip in the last few years. Hartshill’s pubs on the other hand are thriving. Well, they were!
