Just wondered how everyone's tomato plants were doing ? I checked mine this morning and the first few are starting to ripen and turn red now. I tried to take a photo but it was difficult to get the full height of the plants and the tomatoes but as you can (hopefully) see there are quite a lot of tomatoes. I've had to tie the plants to the roof of the greenhouse due to the weight of the tomatoes. Could well be a bumper crop this year - fingers crossed !

I know I'm diluting the thread but with a garden I've worked on for 3 or so years I'm busy building some garden fencing in steel to keep my lads dog Marco off it when he comes home from Australia. I've competed all the construction and installation with just the painting to go weather holding me up now. Once I've finished I'll post a pic of my handy work. I've never done anything like this before but so far it looks good 😳 Ah, bless! How polite! You're not diluting the thread, François, you can say whatever you like! xxx Now we want to see a pic of the fencing...... please!

I will when I've sorted the painting out, I've done two sections 5 to go. It's about 70ft following my sleepers around my boarders. I'm no fabricator or engineer and it's the first time I've ever done anything like this before but I'm proud of it so far !! I have a small solar light on the top of each post which lit up last night for the first time. I've just got to stop my wife from coming up with ideas on what to do next....

They're like cherry tomatoes but a weeny bit smaller and very, very sweet. They're gorgeous!

Thanks murph, I usually get a fairly good crop but I've slightly changed my method this year and it's looking likely that it will be about 30% more than usual. I couldn't get all the tomatoes into the picture as there are probably well over 100 at the moment with even more just starting to swell. I've never heard of Sugar Drop but will keep a look out for them. I've previously grown Sunbaby and Sungold (both yellow cherry type), Black Cherry (reddish-black), but this year I'm growing Gardener's Delight (cherry tomato) and Shirley F1 which is an excellent "large" variety for an unheated greenhouse - these crop very heavily and are resistant to virus attack, leaf mould and the occasional cold snap. The tomatoes are medium to large size, sweet and tangy.

I water and talk to them every morning! Two weeks to take off so may get some more ⚓️

I've had around 3 or 4 dozen red ones so far and there's loads that need to be picked at the moment. I'll try and post a photo tomorrow before my missus picks them all.

I just managed to overtake the wife on her way to pick some of my tomatoes this morning. We've had loads of red ones already and as you can see there are loads ready to pick and still lots more to ripen in the weeks ahead. Attachments:

Just in case anyone missed me (long shot I know)I've lost my old 66 account after some new tech and me losing my details. So I've had to create a new account minus the 66 part 🤷♂️ so ignore the franklin66 account as its now dormant and abandoned. BTW my garden is just packed and lush with a new dog proof fence although I might have all been for nothing as number 1 son seems to be staying in Oz as will his dog Marco.

Welcome to the Oatcake. You are now officially a NEWBE with a mere 14 posts. Just to clarify your Oatcake Status your right/left wing opinions will be immediately dismissed or ridiculed for the foreseeable future, and you will probably be classed as a Glory Hunter supporter who only joined the fold in the glorious years of Pullis and Hughes in the upper tier. 😀 In the meantime seasoned posters would recommend that you immediately join both versions of the “Change a Letter” game to enhance your status. 🤪🤪 ONLY JOKING!

Well nudged. So an update from me - I've moved house now and the following are my challenges: - Getting my 3x apple 3x fig 3x plum 1x Lilac numerous grape vines 2x wisteria up north. - getting 14x 4-14ft various apple pear cherry plum trees from Cambridgeshire up north. (I don't own a van and I haven't quite worked it out yet) These I bought for 99p* - Finding space to put it all

When are you planning on moving them ? While some fruit trees can withstand planting at any time of year, most should really be moved in early spring before their active growth phase, or during the cold season when the tree is dormant. You risk killing the tree if you move it when it has already begun to show signs of bud swelling. I think you've got a bit of a challenge there and I don't envy you. Sounds like you're going to have to hire a van to shift that lot. Good luck whatever you decide to do !

Hopefully I’ll be having my first green house in a month or so, complete novice and was thinking that tomato’s will a starting point for me, obviously next year now. You'll love it I'm sure. Don't know if you've already decided what size you're having, or if you're restricted by available space, but common advice is that no matter what size you think you want (or need), try and get something bigger as normally you'll find that you quickly run out of space. It's the same in winter if you're planning on bringing garden pots into the greenhouse to protect the plants from frost. Have fun and good luck !

Due to not having anywhere to plant things due to the location everything has to be grown in tubs and planters. Trees definitely not an option unfortunately. Some time ago now a colleague at work gave me 4 tomato plants which did ok outside until the first storm almost ravaged everything, they're inside now, very tall and not a flower in sight. My herbs are hanging on for grim death and the grasses seem ok but the salt in the air when the sea whips up means everything comes inside. Is there such a thing as salt loving plants or just very hardy.

Just waiting to see the headlines on Crimewatch now and the tearful quote from the owner: "The b*st*ards pinched my orchard, and I'm sure one of 'em was whistling 'Delilah' and wearing a Stoke shirt!"

Don't forget for Toms, it's the last few weeks of ripening. Trim away extra leaves from the area where the fruits are so more sunny-sol gets to them. Keep picking the ripe ones as you go, don't leave it to pick in one go. That was all.
