Update from oak tree central. I've uprooted and moved one of the new saplings as an experiment to get it out of what's becoming an overcrowded pot. Quite surprised at the tap root it had, very healthy. I've mixed some normal potting compost with John Innes no3 and given everything a good soaking so hopefully not too much disruption. I'll probably do another then leave the remaining ones until they're dormant as per the online tips. Having a South facing aspect in this weather everything is getting watered twice a day. Tomatoes are loving it outside the front door. If these conditions were reliable I'd go more exotic!.
Another fab display, François! Do you mind if I ask if this marigold comes back on its own every year?
There are loads of different Calendulas, but this specific one looks exactly the same as those we used to have at home when I was little & you don't seem to ever see them for sale in packets.

I don't actually know if I'm honest its one of many wild flower seeds I threw about earlier in the year. The good news is I've just come back from Germany visiting our son and they had some left from a wedding we attended so I have a large jam jar full that will last me years 😆
The grasses and lavender in the gravel garden have all grown really well this year. The sunflowers are just starting to peep over the top in the distance.

We bought this new giant lily this year and planted it in a pot to keep an eye an it. They've grown about 5 foot tall (should be around 8 feet in their second year), and the flowers are about 11-12 inch diameter, with a wonderful fragrance.

A big thing around the people we know a neighbour has dozens of them in the front garden and they fill the avenue with fragrance. Plus my lads MIL has her garden full of them too in Germany. They are huge and smell amazing.
Dito mate I do love a dahlia I've got 4, two new ones this year ones doing OK the other has not so much as sprouted a shoot 🥺
Edit: I've just taken a look at the tubers and it's fine still firm and it is starting to grow underground now just a bit slower than the other I planted.

Used a bit of time off constructively today and moved the rest of the oak saplings, just as well because the root systems were becoming well and truly intertwined with each other in the one pot!. I've now got a total of eight healthy trees and hopefully these last four will have a chance to settle down before winter, larger pots are definitely on the shopping list, Pics to follow.

What are you going to do with them ? Oak trees tend to get BIG don't they, although being in pots should curtail their growth.

Plan is to keep one and invest in a good sized tub so it won't have to be moved regularly, one of them appears quite vigorous so I'll plump for that. As for the others there's the area at the back of my place behind the old school chain link fence where no one can access apart from me and my neighbour which will be perfect. I'll be long gone before they'll be a problem. 🙂

The four in the one tub are acorns that i planted and the others I dug up from a different part of the railway on the same day. Just need to decide which one to keep when i've got a tub large enough for it.
“Elvis Presley’s death deprives our country of a part of itself. He was unique, irreplaceable. He burst upon the scene with an impact that was unprecedented and will probably never be equalled. His music and his personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture. His following was immense. And he was a symbol to people the world over of the vitality, rebelliousness and good humour of this country.”President Carter

Chuff, I hope you won't mind me mentioning it, but before planting them in the wild, how about checking with '?????' to see if there is a new national or regional planting scheme going on anywhere for a forest? I think there are quite often these planting programmes happening, and as they are precious oak trees it would be great to think they'll go somewhere where they'll never be disturbed and might live for hundreds of years.......
I'm wondering if there is a plan going on somewhere to plant sth like a forest in commemoration of HM the Queen's 70th Anniversary next year????? I'm sure I've read that there's sth like this happening, and it might be nation-wide? (Maybe wildflower meadows?)
By '?????' I can't think of the name of the appropriate association - would it be the National Trust? Or Wildlife Trust, etc?

Beat me too it Murph I was going to suggest something similar. As for wildflower meadows I've decided to not buy any bedding plants next year as I have some wildflower seeds. I used a few I had this year and they performed brilliantly so now I have a larger supply I intend to sow those instead.

Absolutely love the sound of your idea for next year's flowers, François. It goes without saying that the bees, etc., will love them.
Re any planned new woodland planting schemes for Chuff's oaks, I'll have to hit Google & see if I can find anything out.

The main drawback to planting anything randomly around these parts is the sheep grazing everything!. I did think about trackside at the railway but we've got enough already in fact that's where mine came from hence the protected area behind my place. If all else fails I've got some nice ornamental trees.
Why oh why have I never used a sprinkler before when it needs it I use a hose to water and I've never minded but I decided to buy a sprinkler this morning only cost £6 so I thought I'd give it a go, I hooked up my hose and off it went and it was brilliant did the whole garden perfectly after adjustment to the pressure best £6 I've spent in ages.
Well that's a first I've just seen bats flying around my small garden I know my garden is "insect" friendly so I suppose it makes sense but it's a first in nearly 30yrs.
Now that the winter is "here" I've decided this year to allow everything to die naturally and not be tempted to "tidy" until next March at the earliest. I've decided to see what effect it may have on the wildlife and I assume it will benefit them along with winter feed for the birds. How do you guys deal with winter ?
