Today's football? Macari had shares in brown envelopes. Not so easy to get round FA rules these days as the bigger clubs are finding. UEFA and the Premier League Not sure the FA have any real power True you'd think football was all backhanders and all was nice and clean in the old days the way some talk. The buying of a football club has far far stricter rules rules than the buying of say a major company and have been tightened even more so in recent times. You get this off the cuff, dodgy foreign owner comments with brown envelopes which is of course all nonsense. The PIF have recently bought into oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell and a cruise line business so on what business grounds should Newcastle be blocked?

Telling that the thing that might scupper the takeover isn't the murder and dismemberment of inconvenient journalists. No difficulties passing the "fit and proper person" test there. But undermine our pay TV revenue? Then the Premier League gets serious...

FFS we sell them weapons!

I get what you're saying - we do business because of the oil and we want to retain them as a geopolitical friend in the region - but isn't that exactly what's being proposed here? Selectively NOT doing business with them in this instance because of loss of TV revenue?

Presumably, from the Saudi point of view, they're wanting to throw enormous amounts of money at NUFC is because of all the advertising and PR opportunities the Premier league might give them to improve their image.
Since Shakermaker's post, I've gone down the rabbit hole reading about the history of UK-Saudi relations and trade. The Al-Yamamah series of arms deals are supposedly the single biggest deal that the UK has done with anybody, for anything. Its fascinating and disturbing stuff.
I'm not sure this is going to plan. This ignorant football fan is educating himself!

Rumours circulating in the press that Newcastle are lining Shaqiri up as a major summer signing for them.. Been linked with half of Europe to be fair but Shaqiri mentioned a lot. Would be a decent move . Not going to force his way into the Liverpool side

Rumours circulating in the press that Newcastle are lining Shaqiri up as a major summer signing for them.. Have we got a sell on? You'd hope we would have..... Sell on clauses usually relate to a percentage of any profit Proposed fee for Shaqiri is £10m so would be pointless

Rumours circulating in the press that Newcastle are lining Shaqiri up as a major summer signing for them.. If that's the best their new owners can do, it will be a long term revolution.

I’d take Matt Ritchie though albeit if anyone is coming from the north east it’s more likely they are playing for Sunderland with 15 years of professional football behind them and never having won a foot race

Done to save face, as they know they won't be allowed. Looks like Toon are stuck with Fat Boy!

Could be worse, did a better job than Rafa. I thought they were referring to Mike Ashley. I assumed "fat boy" was Ashley rather than Steve Bruce. I'm glad they won't be buying Newcastle. All my family on my mother's side were Toon fans and although I don't support them the idea of that consortium buying them didn't sit well with me. The fit and proper persons test is still a bit of a farce but it is nice to know that they do draw the line somewhere. I'm sure the withdrawal of the takeover is merely to save face because the writing was on the wall.
