We haven’t had a musical breakthrough since House/Acid in the 80’s. everything else was a rehash. Personally I’d love to see an enema of the X-Factor warbling parlour show off types. Surely this will press the reset button & we can get real again. God rot Simón Cowell...

There hasn't been a real break through since Bill Haley and "Rock Around The Clock". Everything else is simply a twist or variation on what has been done before.
Bill Haley totally changed the music scene unlike anything before or since. He music was also based on what went before, I.e. rhythm and blues shouters like Amos Milburn, Roy Brown, etc. but Haley's hits totally changed popular music.
Coincidentally, or maybe not, around the same time theatre went through a major revolution with "Look Back In Anger" and similar kitchen sink plays.

It's just that very few make it into the mainstream nowadays but Grime is f***ing huge, many many top ten hits. My kids aren't even into Grime but they know the names of dozens of its stars.

Why even think of music in terms of genres? It divides and is divisive. Just lap it up and spit out what you don't like.

Whilst being isolated I have been watching a few documentaries on U Tube about Northern Soul.
Some really good music from the 60/70s and still going strong. Discovered some great tracks but my favourite has to be, “I Want To Give You Tomorrow “ by Benny Troy.
Don’t know how to do downloads but it’s on U Tube. I thought the title was quite apt at this time.
