With great sadness I’ve learnt ( via Facebook ) another dedicated Stokie has left us...Dave Clarke ( Wigan )
i knew Dave for years , through Stoke and his programme selling ..travelled to plenty of aways together for a spell with plenty of lifts given and received
One such game Dave gave me a lift to Notts County away after I’d been wacked in Italy and signed myself out of hospital in Italy , still concussed I’d never of got there or indeed home again without him that day .. genuinely forever grateful for what he did getting me there
Truly gutted ..RIP Dave

That's awful news. I went through a period in the Macari years going to away matches with a group that occasionally included Wigan Dave - last time I saw him was outside the ticket office for a home game a few years ago. Condolences to his family

Blimey, very sad.
Used to see Dave regularly at away matches back in the day. He drove me and a couple of others (including Baby Euan) from Manchester to Cardiff in the 77/78 season. Anyone around back then will I am sure endorse my view that Cardiff away in those days was not a welcoming place.
However, by far the scariest part of that day was the driving rain and a car that I seriously doubt was roadworthy. This was definitely pre-seatbelts as well.
He got us there and back safely, and had endless tales to keep us entertained.
That was when an awayday really was an awayday.
A true SCFC legend and a gentleman.

If it’s the same ‘Dave Wigan’ I’m thinking of (let’s face it, there can only have been one) he took me + my brother Pete to a midweek match at Ipswich mid 70’s and arranged for me + my brother to attend a pre Wigan Casino Northern soul night at a rugby club near his house which acted as a warm up spot before the all nighter at the Casino.

Very sad news. I only knew him by sight but he was always at the away games back in the day.
As someone said, he was a mate of Pep who posts on here from time to time.

Was Dave the lad who always used a crutch?.....if so he was a great lad who I spent many a time with in pubs but never got to know him other than that?
Not seen him since Wigan away a few years ago now and was only thinking I hadn’t seen him for a long time a few months back
RIP

In years gone by I used to go to games with Wigan back in the 70s and 80s. There were always lots of midweek away friendlies miles away fron Stoke and not easy to get to. I renember going to a friendly at Bournemouth away in about 83 with our driver Wigan plus Zigger and Twinny and on the way down we called in at Fellows Park so Wigan could conduct some programme business. IF I remember correctly we played Hibs away in about 1976 when the new came through Stoke had sold Greenhoff to the Shit.Wigan who was driving his car was so upset he turned off the M6 and went home.
I was looking at some photos of myself and other Stoke fans in Kaiserslautern and there was Wigan under a Stoke flag- brilliant.Other Stoke fans on the photo were Rich and Shirley from Hartshill plus Tony Gray,Ken Marek and Belv. Happy Days RIP Dave

Any details Scouse? (I can’t use private mail)
So saddened, as have known him for years. Found myself sitting next to him at an away match a few weeks ago, when he shared a few family problems. But still getting behind the lads.
Will miss him.

Heard about him long before I met him, which speaks volumes for the man. Was a great racanteur with a sense of humour. Always remember his old tales of Stoke away in the 70s, when he used to stand with us on the Boothen in the 90s with Mark and Dave Harrison (RIP). Remember popping into his local unannounced (Orrel or Standish can’t remember) with Bill Crowder (RIP) on the way back from one of our mad trips to Scotland many years ago. Great Stoke fan. He gave me a lift back from Peterborough in the early 1980s, Stoke weren’t playing there , we’d both gone to a night match randomly to ‘do the ground’ I had no way of getting back to Wolverhampton ( where I lived) and he drive me home. Sad news indeed

Gutted to hear of the passing away of my dear mate, for the past 45 years, Wigan Dave. Clarkey was old school, home and away, through thick and thin, loyal and true in his love for all things SCFC. During those 45 years we had so many great times following our shared love of SCFC here, there, everywhere. Although known as Wigan Dave, Clarkey was actually a scouser by birth, growing up as a child in Liverpool. He never lost the slight scouse twang to his accent, mixed with a touch of Wiganese. He was Wigan's answer to Del Boy, working the markets, cash only, under the radar, this time next year he'd be a millionaire. I'd be a millionaire if I'd had a quid for every time I'd heard him start a conversation with "This fella I know has of a load of...... " which he was convinced would be the basis for his next money making scheme. Our friendship started by way of him giving me a lift to Stoke games when I moved to Manchester in '75. Over time I got to know many of Clarkey's mates in Wigan, good lads one and all. He was manager of a Sunday League side, Queens Arms FC, I eventually became honorary bucket and sponge man for the side. Dave's brother Brian was the midfield enforcer, their Glenn Whelan. Clarkey also ran a five a side team, all five players were, by coincidence, named Dave and were known as the Dave Clarke Five. Although in recent years I'd not seen as much of Clarkey, he'd moved down to the south west, I still regularly got texts which simply said "Up The Potters!" I could probably spend the rest of the day posting stories of our away day adventures, there were that many, but I'm not sure where to start so I think I'll just keep them as my memories of a special mate, Wigan Dave. Up The Potters Clarkey lad!

And that line about the Dave Clarke Five is almost too good to be true Had me in Bits And Pieces anyway.

Sad news. I first met Dave in the early 90s as some of the lads I went away matches with knew him & we would often meet up on away trips. Although I stopped going away regularly I still saw him now & again at home matches. I remember one season Stoke were due to play at Wigan's Springfield Park with it's notorious grass bank. The previous season I had ended up on my arse a couple of times on the grass bank & was going to give this a miss. However Dave said he was going to get some tickets for the stand, although with the Wigan fans, & said he would get some for us. He told me that when he went to the ticket office he was told that, as there were Stoke fans trying to get tickets for the match, they were asking for identification. Dave reached into his pocket & pulled out some Uncle Joes Mint Balls (which are made in Wigan) & asked if they would do. He got the tickets.
