Do you live in a £1m house or drive an expensive car that needs paying for? In all fairness and this isn't just for footballers. If I was earning say 10k which wouldn't be huge amount for Championship club then I wouldn't have any debts at all to worry about. Getting by on less than 400 quid once bills paid is a struggle.

I agree. Everything is relative, isn't it? If you were paid that much would you live a life of struggling along on 400 quid or would your lifestyle match? Our very own Mama Sidibe used to live at the back end of Longton in a normal 3 bed house and used to send his money back home, but he is one of a rare breed I'm afraid.

Bit of both I suppose but I've always got the mind set of bills need to paid first before anything, if I was on that kind of money those outgoings wouldn't exist.

Irrelevant if they earm more than you etc. You have no idea of their outgoings etc, some players buy houses on say 5 year mortgages as a short career and may possibly still have many things to pay. Not all Birmingham players will be living in McMansions and drinking Krug for breakfast.

Aren't the government paying them 80%... Yes, 80% of wages up to £2500 per month - i.e. a max of £30k per year. I think we can safely say that Championship footballers get a lot more than that! Some League 1 and 2 players may not get hugely more though. All this assumes that the players are employees. I wonder if some of them count as self employed - in which case (as thing stand at present) they would get nothing from the government. Does anyone know the answer to this?

As far as I understood, all players are employees and paid under PAYE... even those earning huge sums. If they’re not then they wouldn’t be under contract / bought and sold for a fee, would they?

50% of their wages is still a metric fuck tonne, I can’t believe that anyone would think it’s an unreasonable request given the current climate... anyway, good luck to them paying for £1mil Mansions and Hyper Cars if they drive their employers out of business. They won’t get paid even 1% then.

Cmon mate give it some thought eh same as i said mate if you cannot afford it dont buy it Does having a mortgage say mean you can't afford it? If someone with a mortgage doesn't get paid then they will possibly struggle and a mortgage is based on your earnings. Because someone says plays football it doesn't mean they pay for their house in cash, they could still buy a place based on their income and their contracts are only over a short time therefore payments extremely high . I luckily don't have a mortgage but know plenty who do and if high or low earners it's irrelevant. Not everyone who plays football is basking in money and no-one saw this coming.

Anybody earning the sums of money that many of these earn will have financial advisers etc and should have substantial savings and investments put aside for a rainy day or retirement. If they have not but only material possessions more fool them. That rainy day has arrived. In fact it’s going to pore down.
The vast majority of us are facing financial reductions and possible hardships. Why should footballers be any different ?

I don't think they can be self employed mate otherwise clubs couldn't declare them as their assets.

I am sure that quite a few are set up as overseas corporations etc. They call it Financial Tax Planning . I would call it Tax evasion. Messi and Ronald were done, and easily found the funds to pay the substantial fines to avoid imprisonment. Some years ago Romney’s accountant was suing him for millions for alleged unpaid fees. Food for thought.

Food for thought. I don’t know that much about company law but I’m sure when we’ve had discussions about this before the players are listed as assets in company accounts. I’m sure if they were self employed ie sub contractors the company couldn’t list them as their asset. It doesn’t stop the individual players forming their own offshore company and squirrelling their money away there but those are two separate issues.

Cmon mate give it some thought eh You do realise they are only asking for a wage DEFERRAL until a later date. They will get their full payment eventually. Everyone else is suffering and will struggle to pay their rents. We arent asking footballers to do anything differently from the rest of society. A lot of people are already feeling the pain. This is not about hating footballers. Clubs are getting zero revenue from gate receipts or TV contracts without playing games. At least they arent getting the sack like many people in service businesses right now But hey you keep fighting the fight on behalf of the players.
