This isn't a post castigating our club for selling him for under £14 million - I accept that he had a relegation clause in his contract and I accept that we probably would not had been able to sign him had we not given him that clause.
I'm wondering if £28 million is realistic though. He's only featured in 3 starts this season partly down to injuries. I'm sure a fully fit Shaq with 2 full seasons at Liverpool would be worth £28 million but given his low number of starts and his injury problems I'm not sure that they will get that for him. Thoughts?

Would anyone have paid 28 million if he didn't have the release clause in his contract. I don't think so.

Would anyone have paid 28 million if he didn't have the release clause in his contract. I don't think so. Clearly they wouldn't when he played for us. But he has put in SOME great performances for what is now one of the top clubs in world football so, if he had not had injury worries, I do think he'd be worth £28 million now. But his injuries and lack of game time mean they'll be lucky to get more than £20 million, methinks.

He's got West Ham written all over him. Could be playing at the Bet365 as soon as August then! (If someone turns our lives back on before then)

He's definitely good enough for a club playing in European competitions and from what I've seen, he's done quite well in his games for Liverpool. I'd say £20m would be his worth mainly due to his up and down injury record.

Personally I think he is over rated, a touch of class but not consistent enough. He has a winners medal now though and being a lfc player I'd say that was about right in today's market

Has he had injury issues at Liverpool then as well? I just thought he was out of favour?

Great player. I can't believe I had the opportunity to see a player of his ability and standing play for us.
£28m for a champions league winner (2/3 clubs) , premier league winner, plus other domestic trophies. Still only 28.
Stranger things have happened than to see him go somewhere like PSG perhaps? I definitely see him leaving the country.

I suspect that if we were still in the premier league and went back in for him, if Liverpool asked £28m we would have negotiated really hard on the price and got him for £30m.

Biggest coup the club ever made and how we didn’t kick on and solidify the spine of our team with some continental ‘characters’ will haunt the club forever.

Thoughts? He also hasn't played much for his country lately due to his injuries, but he's got a long career as the fulcrum of the Swiss team, a lot of simply stunning performances for them, and any manager that has seen those performances will imagine he can still do it for the right team, i.e. their team. Liverpool will think that if ever they are going to collect money for him it's now as he's not getting any younger. However this may well become academical as clubs are losing money now and in the coming months, all clubs not just the bottom end, and I wonder if we are ever going to see big figure transfer sums again. Don't be surprised to see XS leave on a free eventually.

He's got West Ham written all over him. Championship West Ham? 😊 I think that whatever happens to continue or end the football season as we have it, West Ham's relegation should be confirmed NOW. Then at least we can all have a celebration or party. (In a large socially distanced venue of course.)

Based on 'normal' valuations £28m might not be far off the mark.
I can't help thinking (hoping) that when this virus shit is all over there will be a re-balancing of a lot of things in this World, and maybe football finances will be one of them, with an end to some of the greed and largesse...might just be a pipe dream of course

There is surely no chance in the current environment. When football restarts the finances of top clubs will look very different to what they were before Covid 19. Player values will fall and some clubs will be stuck with a set of overpaid assets that are worth a lot less than they were. I would imagine it wont be long before FFP is suspended, football will be desperate for rich owners to inject whatever they can into the game

Current prices will not continue, sponsors, fans won’t have the money to spend on football like they have had up until recently imo. Seriously think some clubs may not survive, sadly, if this goes on too long.
