Boredom has certainly reached a new low when posters are wishing happy birthday to some extremely untalented and nondescript 80’s footballer! Or complaining about someone wishing happy birthday to a footballer who wasn't too bad in the 70s. A new low ? Had quite a history against Stoke actually So that you understand, I have nothing personally against Mr. Gowling and would wish him Happy Birthday myself. The crux of the post was meant to emphasise the levels of boredom we’re reaching without the day-to-day knockabout that current football allows. Probably being of more advanced years than your good self I remember Alan Gowling very well and while it was perhaps a little unfair to describe him as “extremely untalented” he certainly wasn’t one of the all time greats. To be mathematically correct Gowling played approximately 15% of his appearances in the 60’s, approximately 45% in the 70’s and approximately 40% in 80’s. Like I say, boredom is hitting new lows!!

Talking about autographs, as a lad I was at the Stoke reserves game v Derby County at the Vic. In those days nobody minded if lads ran onto the pitch pre match to collect an autograph or two. After collecting a couple of Derby players autographs, a third completely deflated my bubble by pointing out I’d spelt DARBY wrong. Fancy . . a footballer that could spell!!

I didn't actually ask him, he just signed my programme when I was about 6 and was waiting for my Dad to get tickets

Can you get a player's autograph these days? I got Gordon Banks autograph about 20 times. Bobby Charlton, Best, Greaves, Law, Hurst, Moore etc even Johnny Rep (Ajax v Stoke)

I had a Messi and an Iniesta signed shirt amongst others and gave them away. Still got a Pele one somewhere and I think Maradona boots although no idea where they are.

Some players used to spend ages with a big group of kids around them. It was fun!...them were the days!

70s footballers were great. Some great characters who are my favourites (excluding Stoke players) Ernie Hunt The Doog Alan 'blond bombshell' Whittle Willie Carr Stan Bowles Tony Currie Clyde Best Alan Woodward (who looked about 57 when he was still playing) Alan Gilzean (who looked about 67 when he was still playing!) John Osbourne (who used to have a fag when his team got a corner) Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson Dave Wagstaffe John O'Hare Stewart Barrowclough Cyril Regis Len Cantello Jimmy Greaves Bobby Tambling many more!!! Serious question How come there were so many bald players in the 70s???? Bobby Charlton Ralph Coates Alan Gilzean Bryan 'Pop' Robson Any others? Frank Worthington (non-bald) Rodney Marsh

I know many won't hear a word against him as he played for Stoke but seemed to be the norm them days. There is no doubt that Hudson didn't fulfil his true potential over any significant period of time. The Arsenal move was a disaster. The Revie era was a disaster for him too for England and he obviously did not help himself with the drinking. He was a top player at Chelsea and for 2 years at Stoke. Waste of talent otherwise. Was always happy to sign a autograph though!

Certainly not so tough but England been blessed with ridiculously easy groups of late. The Dutch and Italians didn't make it last time, although not great teams is no certainly England would have found those groups comfortable. Scotland would struggle to qualify if host nation

Scotland would struggle to qualify if host nation Remember though, for 98 and 02 we had Italy 🇮🇹 and Germany 🇩🇪 respectively..... and won the group both times. For the 2004 Euros we got Turkey who were reckoned to be an emerging world power at the time and we won the group. Not that any credit is ever given.

True although they never actually managed a goal v Italy. Turkey were a decent side but not great at that particular time. Was talking more recently when they have played some rubbish to be fair.

There was also hostility towards players then too, it was a different world though without social media where hatred thrives and festers. But I remember hostility towards George Best, Stan Bowles, Cyril Regis, Derek Dougan, Rodney Marsh, Frances Lee, Charlie George, Peter Osgood, Malcolm MacDonald & most Leeds players.
