Most hated man in German footballInteresting article about the ongoing protests by German football supporters regarding the corruption of the 50+1 rule regarding club ownership. A little disappointing the way that Hoffenheim and the German FA have reacted to shut down any form of protest. Banning away support entirely for certain clubs, using sound machines to drown out away fans chanting.

The anti DFB rhetoric at all levels is a huge thing at the moment in Germany

I've got mixed feelings about this one. I really like the German requirement to have fans own part of their clubs and I wish we'd adopt something similar. I also get that this bloke has bent the rules and the footballing authorities have turned a blind eye. However he seems a decent bloke who's made his money above board (certainly far less morally dubious than from betting) and has done well by his local side. Seeing fans of a huge club taking a pop at a small town club for having the audacity to muscle in on the big boys is a bit crap. How would we like it if Manchester United fans were to unveil pictures of Peter Coates in cross hairs when we next play a league game at Old Trafford?

Yes he has, hasn't he. He may not have broken the rules but it sounds to me like he's bent them. The issue is whether what he's done justifies the reaction. Unless I'm missing something I'm not sure it does.

From my takeaway the rule was, if you had financially supported a club for more than 20 years you could buy more shares. He had and he did. No bending?

No bending? The issue isn't the letter of the law but the spirit. As I understand the rule it was intended to ensure clubs are to an extent owned by the fans and don't become the playthings of the moneyed elite - which is what's happened in the UK and US - which at a political level reflects the European social democratic model and the Anglo/American model of letting the "free" market have its way. He sounds like a decent bloke who genuinely loves his local club - but I do get the concern of fans who might see this as the thin of a wedge that will see clubs being owned by a bunch of wealthy arseholes. Like in the UK and US.
