What a lovely player he was. Remember him when very young, great passer of the ball and rarely gave it away. Oddly as watching the Bayern final the other night, how they won I still don't know but such a great footballer.

Awful. How the PFA have dragged their feet over this is absolutely scandalous.

That’s shit news Lovely player, anyone know why his nickname was Sid? A mate of mine is a big Villa fan, he says is his middle name and was given the nickname when the other players saw his passport on a pre season youth tour

That's a proper shame. Met him a few times, nice fella. Shit he's only 2 years older than me as well.

Wasn’t he part of the European Cup winning team? Certainly was and up against the great Paul Breitner who slated the English teams just about every time he played against them, should have learned his lesson after the Liverpool semi. For the record Jimmy Rimmer is the only English born player to win European Cups with 2 different teams...only played 10 mins, was a sub in 68 and went off injured for Villa

Very Sad, whenever I hear his name though I can’t help but smile because it reminds of Jasper Carrot when he was a raw and hilarious comedian taking the piss out of the football radio phone in they used to have on BRMB on Saturday’s after the games. This was a pioneering idea at the time, well before 606 was even thought of.
The phone in was hosted by an abrasive Brummie called Tony Butler, who according to Carrot was so bad he was brilliant. It certainly was an entertaining listen as we used to tune the car radio into it on trips back to Bristol from Stoke games.
Anyway one of Carrot’s routines was to give people from all over the country an insight into this genius show and the interactions between the half baked or half pissed callers and Butler. One such call apparently went like this..... ‘Hi Tone, I’ve been down the Villa today and Gordon Cowans had this great shot. If it’d hit the back of the net it would have been a goal”
Whenever I’ve ever heard Gordon mentioned since I can’t help but think about this and I still think it’s funny!

BM My favourite was the reporter at the ground waiting to interview either a player or manager, when the station eventually got to him the 'star' had obviously got fed up waiting 'cos all you heard was: "Tone, ee's pissed off" As for Gordon Cowans, such a sad piece of news.

What was the link with Stoke for us to play against Villa in his testimonial? I was there with a healthy contingency of Stoke fans and if I remember rightly the crowd was pretty sparse especially with him being a Villa legend. Proper classy player was Cowans, loved watching him.....
