Wow!!!
Loved that shimmy around the defender for Powell for the 5th......Hudson-esque...dare I say!
Very comfortable on the ball and showed some great awareness.
Encouraging debut

streamja.com/Kyr67For anyone that didn't catch it in the match thread. Didn't manage to see the game but two years ago he was being talked about as one of the best prospects in the country, with Allen out this is going to be his opportunity

He made forward runs when he came on expecting a simple forward pass to put him through before the likes of Tommy Smith did the square pass back to the centre half.
He looks way ahead of championship level football on first viewing

Had an iffy 5-10 minutes with a few slips(some were fouls) and some spooned hooks in midfield. Had a solid 45 minutes, doesn’t look out of place in the side at all, very promising and a shrewd signing!

Maybe not a popular opinion but I thought it was a low key debut to say the least.
However, I agree with the post from Lakeland in the match thread.
He was much more comfortable in the latter part of the game when he moved further forward.

The game bypassed him a bit for 20 odd minutes but he grew into the game and showed glimpses of quality, encouraging.

Well he did enough for him to start ahead of the lackluster cousins if the Allen injury news is correct

Weird one. He doesn't seem to have very much when the ball is in our half and he was worrying me a bit, but he was excellent carrying the ball in the opposition half.

Came alive in the dying embers.
Intelligent runs, clean simple passes. Nice dangerous ground cross before his assist that could have easily been turned in.

That'll do his confidence no harm.

If he's playing in a midfield 2 it would have to be with Cousins holding and not alongside Thompson

In a 4231 formation he could play as the more attacking player of the 2 - and quite possibly he could make a decent fist of the No 10 role should Powell not be there. In the midfield 3 of a 433 he would probably do well on either the left or the right side. EDIT: I think he should go down the Bojan route of having just Tashan printed on the back of his shirt!

Not sure what people think, but at present has to be Cousins over Thompson for me, much quicker passer. Thompson I think has promise but for me is behind Cousins.

Not a hope in hell, Thompson looks comfortable on the ball and can actually pass. I'd rather start the young lads in OB and sorrensen over cousins who I don't rate at all

Looks like a number 10 and definitely not a number 8. Skilful, plays with his head up, hopefully the heir to Powell.

He looked on that showing to be a Powell rather than an Allen replacement. Hope Joe is going to recover quick. McClean needed too I think. EDIT just seen the Allen thread

He looked completely lost when he first came on and the game completely passed him by, however the last 15 minutes when he was moved from right midfield into a more central forward role he was transformed. Showed great composure on the ball and was a totally different player.

Pretty awful until he went forward but he’s a kid and learning so that’s fine.
The game passed him when he was deeper and he looked completely lost.
But going forward he came to life and the assist was wonderful. We can’t use him as one of the deeper midfielders but as an alternative to Powell then that looks like it will be a good use of him.

Agreed. Hard to see where he would fit into O'Neill's 4-1-4-1 that he's adopted recently. He could possibly push Powell wide as he's done before bringing Clucas to replace Allen in the middle. Powell played wide today in a 4141. First half it was Clucas and Allen, second half it was Clucas and Oakley Boothe (who was a straight replacement for Allen). But as Rob said TOB definitely looked more like a number 10 than a number 8, he was far more effective when he moved further forward, he has completely different qualities to Allen. A 4231 would work with Powell on the left of the three and TOB as the number 10 but that would mean losing the DCM and Cousins playing next to Clucas in the 2 but would O'Neill be prepared to give up the DCM? I suppose it's a question he's going to have to answer when McClean returns anyway but then it'll not only be a question on whether to return to 4231 but whether Powell OR Oakley Boothe play as the number 10. I think we're down to Cousins or Thompson as the replacement for Allen.

I'll give it three weeks before the fans are wading in.
Looks a bit different and has a touch of flair about him. When he fills out a bit and gets more experience, will finally be that NZonzi replacement.

I wonder if with Allen out it might be an opportunity for Sorenson to show why you love him so? Gotta say it sounded like he did alright in the game against United.
