So McClean didn't cost us points at the start of the season? I'm sorry, he runs and runs, that's fine, but he's not an important contributor, so help us NJ... Jones cost us points by not getting a proper left back in and playing McClean out of position. Once playing in his natural position McClean became the prime candidate for player of the season and main contributor to our turn round in fortunes. Both McClean and Allen are massive losses - they do the dirty jobs that provides the flair players with the platform to strut their stuff. Without them the flair players just end up being ineffectual show ponies with a disappointed fan club. Fortunately in Thompson and Cousins we have some unspectacular workhorses and Oakley-Boothe to keep the fancy dan fan clubs happy. As I said elsewhere it is a great pity Verlinden was injured at the exact same time as the running doggie, because he would have had the opportunity to stake a claim for the shirt, and once he did, he would remind us what a great footballer is and that McClean is nothing of the kind. So he was played out of position, tough, but he showed an alarming inability to position, cover, and tackle and that cost us quite a bunch of points. His actual contribution is very limited, but, he does keep the dogspotters happy, I'll grant him, and them, that. Put our faith in Cousins(I haven't really seen enough of Thompson yet) instead? Now that is asking for trouble.

It really isn't all about young, pretty show ponies prancing around doing their little tricks - for every Verlinden you need a McClean to do the dirty work. Fernandinho is a horrible footballer in every sense of the word but Manchester City aren't half the team when he isn't playing. I'm not saying McClean is in the same class but he is certainly in the same mould - and every team needs a couple of dogs of war to compete. And I unashamedly love dogs so the attempt at an insult missed the mark completely. And who do you suggest replaces Allen? When McClean comes back and displaces Powell I either see it as Cousins sitting deep with Clucas pairing with Powell or Thompson as attacking mids or Powell sitting in front of Clucas and one of Thompson or Cousins - and as a sitting midfielder I prefer Cousins - another unspectacular player who gets stuck in and does his job. Which is what you want from a sitting midfielder.

Come to think of Alf Ramsey accused the Argentina of being no better than dogs, while he himself had Stiles and Charlton dug in there, so you may have a point. We've had our fair share of physical players, just ask Arsene Wenger. Of course we need them, at the back and in the bottom of midfield, but what we don't need is a physical brute unable to cross to a team mate. We need creativity in the team, Verlinden's got it, McClean has nothing of the kind. They happen to play in the same position though you could hardly find two more diverse players. So are we to be a team of cloggers perennially fighting relegation or are we going to play football. Choosing between those two, but not just them of course, really defines what type of team we are. McClean is good if you want to fight against relegation next season too, he's going to keep running but doing nothing creatively. Verlinden on the other could help us move above. As for who I suggest replaces Allen. Why don't you read the thread you're in? My first contribution was on page 7, but by page 8 I was accused of being all over three pages. Some people's arithmetic problems notwithstanding I don't have to repeat that all over again.

Allen is crap. Is that clear enough for you. Him out of the side is a golden opportunity for someone to come in and make all our matchday lives better. It just won't happen vs Reading already. The manager has a different opinion, as did all of his predecessors, so we've never seen a like for like replacement, much less an alternative. If you read O'Neill's presser he too has several deliberations as to just who's gonna take the spot. Whoever does come in isn't going to be the Xavi in our team straightaway, with the team having gotten used to a lot of running nothings from number four. He's going to need help from the established players, so they will have to dig in and give 10% extra till the new guy finds his style and place within our tactical system. I would prefer Sorensen to be that player, but despite speaking well about him on a number of occasions I doubt O'Neill will give a kid the chance. So we may have to go through a period of using an inadequate Cousins first, before the manager swallows his pride and plays the best option. And now all I've done is repeated myself filling up the page, just for you.

Even if we accept your opinion that he's shit, the remainder of your, once again very lengthy, tome clearly demonstrates that the team will miss him. Can you not see the contradiction in your argument?

I think we'll be fine, if Sorensen comes in, but being a young lad with 2 league games to his name, he has to find his feet in the team, and he can only get that by starting games, but once settled in, Allen will quickly be forgotten. So sorry, bonnie lass, there won't be an immediate fix for you.

Allen will be a massive miss. He galvanises people around him without shouting or making grand gestures. I am if honest a little apprehensive about Cousins and Thompson in there. If you watch closely Allen nearly always arrives in the box when we attack, I can't see either doing that & I think as a result our attacking will be the lighter for it.

We need to have Cousins and Thompson in the middle and put Clucas to the left and Ince to the right with Powell behind Campbell. When McClean is fit, I wouldn't be especially keen to move away from this, other than McClean coming in for Ince. I've not been a fan of playing them both, although home games may prove different. Clucas hasn't really got the discipline to stay deeper and Cousins or Thompson on their own might struggle. We need to manage our resources sensibly. An injury to Powell, Clucas or Campbell could prove disastrous.

Just need Thompson and Cousins to be disciplined as I don’t know if they’ll be able to recover or make interceptions as well as Allen.
