He’s not what’s required. A midfield enforcer. He’s about 6 stone. When played further forward he got goals. Remember? Now he’s a below average defensive midfielder. Maybe not his fault though. I haven’t called him a twat. He’s not a midfield enforcer (but he’s way more of one than TOB) but he is energetic and busy and harries and wins the ball back. Between now and the end of the season it’s not clear who else we have who’s capable of that. I don’t think we’ve had anyone good enough for a long time. Shame about woods and etebo. We’ll stay up then rebuild.

Zerps you seem like a decent dude but Allen for me has had some bad form and has tried too hard at times I think chasing lost causes. Been playing a role he isn't cut out for, we need that horrible player behind him, A Harry Arter or similar. Thing is though under MON he's been a massive part of our revival and deserves huge credit for that as do many others despite what happened before. I get many have players they don't like but he's going to be a massive loss for us

A very sad day for our Joe who comes across as one of the good guys. All we can do is hope he makes a full recovery and that someone makes the most of their opportunity in his absence. Joe's performances have often been the source of much debate on this board with opinion fully divided. My own honest opinion is that sometimes I think his contributions are immense and he has ran the game for us, and that he is probably one of a few of our players that might be wanted in the Premier League. However, there are those games when he seems to scuff his shots, misplace passes and frustrated me to bits. The next few weeks will tell how valuable he is to us, those with an extreme opinion will be proven right. Meanwhile it's fingers crossed we maintain our current progress since MON arrived. I'm still confident we will stop up, think we will end up closer to half way than bottom of the league come May. Glass half full.....single malt tonight

You've lost the plot pal. Pick that apart then. Zerps is correct. Allen was much better in a forward position. He fed off scraps and scored goals when he first signed. Playing deeper is not his strength. He’s a poor tackler (not as bad as Adam!) and he gets out of position. However, he will be missed on and off the pitch, because he seems a very decent bloke and appeared to take relegation very personally.

As soon as I saw the replay I said achilles because he looked behind him as if he got kicked and he wasn't even touched. Seems to be the common feeling with a ruptured achilles injury. It was certainly the feeling when I did mine. I was playing 5-a-side and collapsed instantly. Looked behind me to see who it was who went through the back of me with hob-nailed boots on and there was no one near me. I heard the 'pop' as the tendon went - a sound nearly identical to the 'pop' of bubble wrap. The good thing is that once the initial excruciating pain has subsided it becomes a nagging throb but you can walk on it. It was not possible to ride a bicycle though as I found to my cost immediately after I did it. Operation inside 4 days and ~4-6 months average recovery depending on how clean the rupture.

His injury will be a loss to the team for the remainder of the season. At least Joe can take a little solace in that he won't miss the Euro's, as they'll probably be cancelled anyway.

I've always rated him. You take a player like that out of the team and you'll see the consequences A captain that fails to instil any confidence or motivation whatsoever? Let’s hope so. By that logic Shawcross oversaw our relegation as captain doing the same if not worse.

A captain who demonstrably cups his ears towards the fans, the second he gets criticised... I'm sorry he'll miss the Euros but we can do without him. I doubt if Cousins is the right guy to replace him. Over 2/3s of the season he has not found consistency at any point and the good games he's had can definitely be counted with one finger. He's not really an Alleny type of player, so if we were to use him it would be with two defensive anchors, Thompson and Cousins, which might work if we have defend a narrow lead, but otherwise he offers too little. The options for me are 1) Sorensen. I've been pressing his case for a while, but knowing how unwilling O'Neill is playing young Collins despite the lad being our best player, he's probably not going to pick Lasse, although he might appear more often on the bench. Just in case. 2) With six fit central defenders on our books, we might revert to the unloved five back system. If we played three cds, one might add a little support to midfield or make forward runs (Collins). If we did, we might even reintroduce Tymons, who's got pace and is better going forward, and Smith or Edwards would be less exposed, if the defensive base was covered. 3) Play Powell in a slightly deeper role but more centrally than he is currently. It won't be foreign to him if you look at his previous parts at Wigan. He'll still have Thompson behind him with Clucas dropping back a little too Until McClean returns, play N'goy or Gregory wide on the left. If N'goy proves himself on the left, don't bother about returning McClean! I'd prefer the Powell adjustment

Dropping Powell deeper and giving him more defensive duties is the worst of both worlds, it nullifies his creativity while asking him to do a job he’s not especially suited to. Haven’t seen enough of Sorensen. Imagine he’ll give Thompson or Cousins a run in Allen’s place, at least at first.

That sort of position never stopped Allen from bursting forward, on the contrary in fact. Powell would be closer to his best position than he is on the left where defensive tracking is also expected from the role. He's never going to be an Allen, but he can still serve us well, while also doing some of what he does best. It isn't ideal. We can just be happy that Powell is adaptable and flexible and can do more than one role. Thompson is already in the team, perhaps not fully established, but he's played as a 6 lately. So he isn't going to replace Allen, obviously. So you'll be throwing your eggs in Cousins' nest. Good luck with that, it will get messy.

McClean coming back, hopefully next week, will allow Powell to go back into the centre with Thompson or Cousins dropping deeper. Not ideal but probably the best option. What little I have seen of Sorensen I have liked but to throw him in at this stage of the relegation scrap? I am not sure.

Thompson would be playing the Allen role because McClean will be back on the left and hopefully Powell back at number 10. I'm no great Cousins fan but he had a good game at Luton and it's less 'messy' than a radical change in formation or shackling our most creative player.

Why not just play Clucas and Thompson with Powell at 10 and see how that goes?

I don't see it as a huge problem once McLean is fit preferably by next week. Revert to pre McLean system with Thompson playing in Allen's position alongside Clucas and Powell back to supporting Campbell in what was a very promising partnership. Thompson has shown he has the delf discipline for the defensive work and shows a lot of energy and aggression. Not got Allen's experience but I suspect Thompson was bought as Allen's replacement should he have been sold this summer. Whilst McLean is out I think Cousin showed enough at Luton to prove that given a specific job he a can succeed. I also think that OB will be a very adequate sub given the way he grew into the team yesterday and the look on his face when he celebrated his assist said to me that he's keen to succeed.
