Shear Incompetence. I wonder whose friends are behind all these overegged coordinated briefings. Bercow inquiry on bullying recommends he steps down Labour keeps him in place, unsubstianted claims against Patel and Labour wants her burned at the stake.

These days people say they are bullied if somebody queries why they haven't done work. Managers are finding it increasingly hard to manage people as a result. One guy recently said he had PTSD as a result of a tough interview I'm currently re-reading Churchills history of the 2nd world war, its clear that if people had had the same attitudes then as now we'd all be speaking german....

She's a new boss that wants things to get done, some of these lily livered cardigan knitters have been comfy for far to long and don't like being pushed. Just posted this, possibly on the wrong thread ,Northy Patel seems to me as someone who is on a mission " to get things done" and no one will be allowed to get in her way. I'd imagine that she is very forthright in what she wants, makes it clear and won't stand for any resistance, perceived or real. Her approach might include shouting. For me the issue really rests on the resistance and the degree of unco-operarion that Rutnam was " guilty" of. Had he gone beyond his role, following 33 years in the civil service? My suspicion and they of others is that senior civil servants have over stepped their boundaries and tole for many years...Advisors advise, Ministers decide......but have advisors been economical with the truth in respect of their advice?....It would not matter so much when advisors and politicians share the same beliefs ,as has been the case in recent years in respect of Brexit. Perhaps a change of personnel is inevitable and necessary if a new regime who actually want to go in a different direction comes in....a bit like a football manager who brings in his own backroom staff. Perhaps, due to her personality, it could be argued that Patel has gone about it in the wrong way. Perhaps she would have been treated differently if she had been a man ( perhaps she should have self identified upon taking up the post). Perhaps there was no other way to get rid of the mandarins if indeed they are a problem. If sides are to be taken I am on Patel's side , unless more is revealed.

The Press Association has filed more on what Jeremy Corbyn’s spokesman told reporters at his post-PMQs briefing about Priti Patel. The spokesman said:
"We’ve had government staff contact our office directly with information and allegations about bullying in the Home Office by Priti Patel.
The spokesman would not be drawn on how many people had contacted Labour, but said staff from the Home Office and other departments had contacted the party in the last 24 hours. The allegations relate to Patel and another former minister, the spokesman said.
They are bullying and harassment allegations of Government staff and they simply build up the picture that has already accumulated in recent days. It is quite clear this is not an isolated allegation by one individual about one incident or one set of incidents."

"....then as now we'd all be speaking german" Why? because the hand wringers would have taken over and we would have lost the war in 1941, then Hitler would have turned us into a German satellite state and made german the mandatory first language of Europe. The obvious thing to point out is that the three big losers in WW2 were Germany, Italy & Japan but they all still speak German, Italian & Japanese. But, even rolling past that one, the Germans were so overstreched and so weak that the Russians would have just marched in to Europe a few years earlier than they actually did and they would have flattened the Germans. Had that happened, there is no evidence that they would have tampered with the native languages of the various countries of W.Europe and so we'd probably all still be speaking English, French, Flemish etc. (I accept that German itself might have been banned). I don't think there was ever a prospect that we'd end up speaking German. Although, speaking as someone who can speak German, Italian and French as well as having a smattering of English, speaking German would not actually be too ucomfortable for us. It's very similar to English. But, as its turned out, we've got the best language. As George Dubya once said, "if English was good enough for Jesus, then it's good enough for me"!

I suggested 1941 - that year the germans were winning big right up until december that year. The russians were in disarray at that point. The USA were wavering and didn't join in until after pearl harbour - also that december. We stood alone save for the dominions. There were people in Parliament who wanted to make peace with Hitler on any terms. The north atlantic treaty terms ensured the sovereignty and languages of nations, the allies were true to them. I don't believe Hitler would have had any such qualms ?

I don't believe Hitler would have had any such qualms ? I noted you said 1941. I would still maintain that they (the Nazis) would have been overstretched maintaining law and order, as they saw them, particularly in Britain but in some other countries as well. The Russians, seeing this, would have marched in and flattened them. All conjecture, of course. We’ll never know. There’s probably a few on this board who would like to imagine that they would have preferred that outcome. Alas, reality has a nasty habit of destroying dreams.

It used to be that they challenged the authorities.Mind , it is easier being in opposition and to criticise individuals, rather than to "get things done". ( I daren't mention Tommy Robinson....he is quick with his fists and tends to be hot headed....but at least he had the courage to do "something" about what he perceived as wrong doing in working class communities
