Hong kong schools are now going to closed until at least April 20. A self employed teacher I know is going to get a payment of 10,000 HKD (about £1,000). I wonder what measures will be put in place for self employed people here if they are forced to stay away from work etc. Absolutely The panic mongers won't stop until they are by the looks of things. Thankfully flights etc are continuing as normal and controlled as with SARS which caused us big problems at the time where I was stationed but was contained by those in the know and so far so good. I'll take their word re safe travel over The Sun or someone on a message board Who is this 'their' that you are referring to?

I was talking to a friend in the travel business a wee and a half ago saying that there would be no way at this moment in time I'd be prepared to get on a cruise ship. She got her phone out and there was ream after ream of messages from ABTA saying how safe it was. When I questioned their independence she wouldn't have it. Sounds like we've got our first plague hotel as well now in Tenerife.

A busy morning in the news for this today, 2 new confirmed cases in the Uk, 1 caught it in Italy the other Tenerife. Japan announces that it is closing all schools, another Iranian politician has it and China has said that 14% of people who recovered from it and tested negative are now testing positive again.

Just saw that the mortality rate in Iran seems to be closer to 10% than the 1-2% reported in other countries. If you compare the apparent number of infected vs the number of deceased. I think the regions with weak healthcare systems (Middle east and Africa for example) are going to see a lot of deaths.

I’ve got back from Tenerife earlier in the week. Should have flown home Sunday but were stuck on tarmac for 5 hours and then the airport all night because of sandstorm. Ended up flying on Monday afternoon. Airport was chaos. The Buxton guy was in the Adeje palace on the Saturday night as far as I’m aware so must have left on the Sunday like myself. Would love to know which flight he was on. There were hundreds of us stranded at the airport on the Sunday evening in a pretty confined space. Would be useful to know a bit more info on his route home.

I understand they are working on a call back basis using a sliding scale risk assessment so if you are a person at risk you should know quite soon. I am sure you will be fine mate!

I should lose the 'Chinese' from the title of this thread, with hindsight it was like calling AIDS a 'gay plague' as many did, these viruses don't discriminate and know no bounds.

First case in Northern Ireland, someone returning from Italy via Dublin, that's another few hundred that have been exposed to it

Maybe it's called Chinese because that is where it originated from or is that to simple ? I have a car that originated in Germany is it radical to call it a German car, if it was built by a homosexual would it be a gay car or a German car built by a gay FFS what is the World coming to

I think we should stick to the Chinese after all this is the country that shared bird flu and Sars with the rest of the world. It may be about time that they put their intelligence and efforts into stopping the next strain by sorting their livestock markets out.

I suppose more to the point it might be incorrect to call your car German.
Branded German, but built in Czechia maybe. Possibly migrant workers. Raw materials definitely not from Germany.
But apart from that, yeah nice one mate. Good analogy 👍🏽

It may be about time that they put their intelligence and efforts into stopping the next strain by sorting their livestock markets out. The first known case of H5N1 bird flu in birds was Scotland, 1959. In humans as far as I'm aware it was May 1997, in Hong Kong. A small child who sadly died of it. Given that Hong Kong wasn't handed back to China until July of 1997, I take it you and carps would be okay with bird flu being referred to as "100% British bird flu" from now on? Or alternatively we could all just agree that it's incredibly infantile and idiotic to pretend that viruses know what a fucking border is
