The most remarkable and under reported symptom of this Covid crisis seems to be how it's affected the brains of those that don't have it. 🙄 Fucking hell, i absolutely love that.

I haven’t heard much about Brazil lately in the media, maybe because their death rates are declining, think they had 471 yesterday
I then checked Argentina who adopted a hard lock down and their death rates seem to be climbing steadily, I think they had 384 on the same day despite having a population about 1/5th of Brazil’s.
Lockdowns don’t appear to be that effective and even the WHO seem to agree with that

All geared around "mandatory" testing and vaccines to go about your daily business / normal lives. Once all that kind of bollocks is in place it will be amazing how the deaths and cases of this virus will be on a back burner on the news.

WTAF is this? Mind you, judging by the replies and quote tweets it hasn't got the reaction they were presumably hoping for or expecting. I think someone at the DHS had been peeking at the Oatcake

Why are regional lockdowns up for discussion and negotiations They are either warranted or they are not I agree. If action is being taken at a national level there should be clear criteria and consistent rules - the whole idea of negotiating is ridiculous and subject to political bias (for example Tory gyms are safe, Labour ones aren't). The alternative is to devolve responsibility to local authorities and have them take full responsibility for their actions - which personally I think is what should happen. What works in urban Manchester probably won't in rural Devon - leave it to the people who understand their patch to do what is best. Especially when you have the most incompetent and corrupt government in living memory. Good post, I was reflecting on this myself. I can see an issue with devolving decision making downwards though. Which is that if anyone screws up big style it won't only hurt the good folks of that particular Borough it could hurt the entire region or country, this virus doesn't respect any man made boundaries.

The government are the ones spreading misinformation, hiding critical information and then people turn up misinterpreting what's there. I'm very sceptical of Carl Heneghan who does write ups for the Spectator where Boris used to work. I'm sure they are all linked together.

Then there would be no point them being open as they would also be loosing their after work crowd. Pubs are getting a right kicking, don't they realise a lot of business is done in a pub for many self employed workers, it's not just pubs affected by pubs being closed.

Arguing with the government seems to be having more of a beneficial effect than any of the restrictions to date.

Plenty of MSM reporting that Sweden are imposing 'lockdowns'.
Swedish lockdown:
'The new rules, expected to come into force on Monday, will allow regional health authorities to ASK citizens to avoid public places such as shopping centres, museums, libraries, swimming pools, concerts and gyms.'
Sweden is my favourite second country.

What matters is hospital admissions not infections, I wonder where we are with the former? Meantime I'm still confused with Andy Burnham's position. He doesn't believe Tier 3 will work but give Manchester a financial 'bung' and he's in?

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/18/revealed-some-manchester-area-hospitals-already-fullSo much conflicting information going around. Cases and positive tests mean nothing when people are double or triple counted, hospital admissions and number of people in hospitals should be the best gauge of where we are but then you see articles like this and you think to yourself why is Burnham and other Tories questioning further restrictions when it looks like they should be implemented immediately and fight for funds later. It just constant mixed messages.

He doesn't believe Tier 3 will work but give Manchester a financial 'bung' and he's in? His position is entirely consistent the money narrative is straight out of Tory party HQ. They've been under tier 2 measures for months, he doesn't believe there is any scientific proof that Tier 3 will do anything, if needed at all. However if the government are going to insist on an experiment in his area and his low paid constituents suffer even more than they have so far then they deserve more money than is on offer. The numbers make no sense for an increased lockdown, they are flat or descending. What we should be asking is why Nottingham is not under the same pressure as GM to go into Tier 3 when they have the highest case rate in England. This is all about brow beating a labour mayor who dared to challenge the PM. 7th to 14th Oct Manchester 431/100k |2,383 cases|down 518|tot 14,338| Nottingham 807/100k |2,688 cases| up 156 |tot 7,785|

The research survey from imperial imperial college is probably one of the better forms of information too. www.ipsos.com/ipsos-mori/en-uk/largest-testing-study-coronavirus-publishes-latest-findingswww.imperial.ac.uk/news/206273/community-coronavirus-infections-growing-nationally-react/Looking at the latter link I wonder if that is where the rule of 6 came from.

Hospital admissions too? Sorry to go on about this but that's the key measure. Is it the key measure the PM is using to decide the tiers? Infection rates are used as an indicator for future hospital admissions (and of course deaths). The problem is twofold - first we don’t know the correlation between infection rates and hospitalisation rates (it’s not possible to know) and second if we wait to act on increased hospitalisation we will have waited too long. That said, the actions being taken need much more scrutiny on two levels... 1) that they make any difference and 2) that they don’t cause other problems that are worse than what they are looking to fix. I’ve seen nothing from anyone looking at the above seriously. This is the road I’d hoped Starmer was heading down when asking for the evidence supporting 10pm curfews. Instead he’s gone down the route of “following the science” as if “the science” is giving a clear and complete answer (which it isn’t). (Don’t get me (re)started on Burnham’s self aggrandising posturing - he can fuck off).

In my imagination he has a box full of facial features, like Mr Potato Head, which he applies as appropriate before any interview. Doleful eyes and furrowed brow have been seeing a lot of use the last few weeks.
