I was wondering about cults the other day. I'm sure they were all the rage in the 90s.
So started googling them and struggled to find any named uk ones.
So have any of you been in a cult, are they still knocking about and how do you join one, I'd prefer a sex cult I tried corbins marxist one and it just left me disappointed

Im sure the sex would follow.

I think that the most ( in) famous one was the Children of God ,that meets your criteria. Jeremy Spencer was a member.

I believe one of our members once exhibited his qualifications for being in the Moonies.

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p06qc469David Koresh was a cult leader that ended up in the Waco debacle - but many (over 70 I think) of those members were UK citizens - they believed he was the second coming and Branch Dividians still exist and see him as a fallen messiah and not as a deluded psychopath

Plenty of cults on here.
Stupid cults, funny cults, obnoxious cults, and my most favourite of all - daft cults.

I think we need more flesh on the bone Actually Fel I was approached in Hanley of all places. A pretty, enthusiastic young girl. I remember having a debate about " the existence of God" and was invited to something later. I wasn't absolutely clear about everything but just at the time there was some awareness of cults...and she did seem over the top in enthusiasm to join. I chickened out...looking back I might have done things slightly differently if you know what I mean.

How about the Jehovas lot?
They always seem quite keen to attract new financial contributors, they were around our area every other week at one point, seemed to be targetting some of the elderly that live close by, until someone pointed out that the 'no door to door canvassing' law that the signs refer to applies to them as well.
Personally I love a good chat with them, just not on my doorstep.
Are the moonies still going, they seemed quite popular at one point.
There was a programme on a short while ago about that Jonestown massacre, 900 poor souls murdered including many children, sickening.

I'd agree with that Mick, but would include number of followers" in real estate...and the power a d influence. For me there is a danger in the size and influence some religions grow to...all start with a simple idea or belief and involve convincing others by one means or another....just because they are big does not mean that they are right. Also I'd have thought that many people are either brought up in religions,/ cults and don't have a chance to think for themselves ( is that at all possible?) or many join at an impressionable age.

I think a fairly large distinguishing factor between a cult and a religion is how open it is.
Most of the larger religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hiduism etc) openly publish their beliefs in books that are available for anyone to read.
Cults tend to be more exclusive, if not outright secretive or insular (see the cloudy and shrouded Church of Scientology and its copyrighted "scripture"). I think any religion that actively charges money should fall into the cult category too.

I guess that puts a fair few of us in a cult then.
