I have to say I don't know what Butland is doing wrong at the moment. He made a good save when called on on Saturday, and came out decisively a few times. He caught the ball well and even his distribution was fine. All this behind a very unreliable back four which doesn't help him to know when to trust his defenders. Had a good game against Millwall, and hopefully he will play as well as he did in the last half of the season last season.

Jack's shit though. A liability. Worst keeper ever. Isn't he? Jack has had a nightmare season in many ways, but he is starting to up his game after MON's arival as a number of players are. We'll stay up!

Jack's shit though. A liability. Worst keeper ever. Isn't he? Butland has done well to keep 22 clean sheets since the start of last season considering Stoke have only kept 17 in all competitions in that time. Federici has 2 cup clean sheets and 1 league clean sheet out of that too. Butland has kept 14 clean sheets since the start of last season. 10 last season, majority of which were 0-0s under Rowett and 4 so far this season. 3 of which have come very recently under O'Neill. Where the fuck have they got 22 from?

Jack's had a pretty poor season. we only have Kamil Grabara at Huddersfield saving a fewer than expected number of shots based on the quality of those attempts than Jack. If you look at every attempt on goal JB's faced, you'd expect an average keeper to let in around 24 goals. Omitting the two own goals, Jack's let in 30. There's around a 95% chance an average keeper does better than that. Not good. Here's the chance of each shot he's faced will result in a goal & the red bars are the actual goals. Probabilities run from 1 for "will result in a goal every time" to 0 for "will never be a goal". The likelihood of a goal is based on where and how the shot was taken from, where on the goal frame it is directed, how hard it's kicked, whether it is deflected, if it has swerve, etc. It's called xG2 just to annoy people :-) Attachment DeletedGood news is xG2 is much more transient than xG

No wonder no one wants to touch with him a barge pole.... An absolutely staggering stat. Incredibly damning and proves beyond dount that he's singlehandedly cost us a huge number of points this season. It does, however, paint our defence in a good light. To watch them you'd think we were all over the shop and conceding chances right, left and centre but to he fair we're not.

Sorry, reds are goals conceded, blues are saves. They're in chronological match order. Higher the bar the more difficult the save based on the pre and post shot characteristics. This is Jack from 2017/18 (red goals/green saves) Attachment DeletedThis season he's let in virtually all of the difficult ones and a fare few of the easier ones as well.

No wonder no one wants to touch with him a barge pole.... just to stick these shots in context. We do have the 5th fewest shots conceded per game in the top two flights. But these shots on average have a 12.2% chance of turning into goals based on where on the pitch they originate and whether they are shots or headers, we're ranked 27th out of 44 on that. We're allowing relatively high quality chances It gets worse if we look at how frequently and dangerously those shot locations turn into actual attempts on target (which could be down to poor defensive pressure or a bit of luck on the part of our opponents). The post shot goal likelihood increases by around three goals from the pre shot expectation. That's a change of 10% and ranks us 41st out of 44 top two flight sides. So "5th fewest shots" goes through a few under performing moving parts before they reach Jack's similarly underwhelming attempt at stopping them.

The stats above says he is one of the best keepers. If we are facing few shots, and conceding a lot of goals, how would that make him one of the best keepers? You're right. I'm wrong. I translated the word "conceded" wrong here. Sorry. A stat showing the rate would be better: goals conceded in relation to the number of shots/headers.

I do think he has a point, Butland's been better and he's claimed some crosses and balls into the box that I don't think he would have at the start of the season. There's still a player in there if he can get his confidence back, if things to continue to improve for him over the next couple months we should offer him a new contract while his stock is low.
