There are different variants but generally I think the idea is for Cousins to be the holding midfielder and for the other two to put themselves about a bit, yes. Allen to buzz around doing Allen things and Clucas to be the one arriving late in the box to chip in with a goal here and there. Powell is a number 10, I can't really see him doing it in a deeper role or who you'd leave out to accommodate him in that system. I'd prefer we went with something that left the striker less isolated, but that would really mean dropping Allen or playing a back three, neither of which are going to happen. Ideally we'd at least have someone in midfield capable of driving forward. It looks like the current three are the three we're going with though, and it'll be full-on RowettBall grind mode from here on in. I guess we have to hope that'll be enough. I think the idea is that the not-wingers get close to the striker to prevent him from getting isolated, rather than trying to work the flanks. I think that's part of where we're going wrong with 4-3-3 for years: our full backs aren't capable of providing any width, so our wide players go out there anyway. Plus you have Ince on one side, who theoretically plays the position properly, but McClean on the other side who plays like a conventional wide man who likes to get crosses in. There's no balance and the players aren't right for the system. Again. I think that’s about the size of it - we’re essentially back to where we were a year or so ago - better than under Jones but still pretty dismal. Hughes came closest to getting the balance right with his post-Bojan injury Plan B in 2014-15. The 4-1-4-1 with Whelan behind Adam and Nzonzi. Had a bit of everything.

Do you even read what you are writing?! Powell, according to you (and me) need a run of games to find his groove. He hasn't had anything remotely like that, just 2 starts, 3 months apart, and a few cameos, mostly 10 mins which certainly isn't anything like a decent run. Yet you go out of your way to state twice that he hasn't done anything. Players can do plenty in 10 mins, Diouf when he scored. Powell cant even be bothered to break sweat. Against Wigan I thought he was the worst player on the pitch. A full time bottler. All the good that did Diouf was more bench time!

Considering he’s our most natural and most creative footballer why don’t we just play 4-2-3-1? Cousins and Allen sitting. Powell at Number 10. Would give Gregory a bit of support as well. Allen sitting, like that would happen

Surely there's some place for him in a balanced midfield, somewhere? I'd even try him up front, since he caused mayhem there for Wigan against us. He did give him a go in a midfield 3 against Wigan at home, didn't he? He wasn't a complete disaster, but wasn't great. Since then, just the odd cameo - culminating in him not making the 18 for the last 2. Even with no wide players and no quality up front, it doesn't appear to have been on the agenda to change formation or try him wide or up top. It's hard to really see a future for him Wasn’t that his first start after months out though? It’s not overly fair.

Which all calls into question (again) the overall vision at work here when appointing a man who favours a unique system that the squad is wholly unsuitable for and then sort of recruiting for that system but not really, before appointing a manager who wants to use the players that the last manager didn't need and get rid of the players that the he did need. I understood what they tried to do with Rowett and appreciate what they wanted to do with Jones, but it's a real mess now. It did help that we had an actual world-class, soon-to-be-World-Cup-winning central midfielder in there, too. The list of midfielders we've signed since N'Zonzi left is enough to make you weep, especially since they're almost all effectively the same player.

We need an enforcer or two in the middle to shield and protect the likes of Allen and/or Powell. Maybe MON could try something different and play four centre backs (from Baath, BMI, ShawX, Souttar (?), Collins/Lindsay/Cousins); Ward and Smith as old-fashioned fullbacks. Powell and Allen as link men behind Tyrell, Diouf/Gregory. Federici keeps goal. Drop Ince, Clucas, McLean.

I'd play him up front given we dont have a forward worthy of the name And me but thought he’s off to Leeds? Can’t see that personally, he’ll break down every other day in a Bielsa team.

Look, you may not have discovered it, but Nick Powell is one of us now. Lay off the tiresome sick note jokes. He's had a few injuries, but he's played well about 200 games in his career, which is pretty good. Here's to the next 200!

By 'one of us' you mean he's drawing a wage and making less appearances than Terry Waite during his hostage years. One of us my arse.

Clear whenever he has got in the pitch that he has more ability than anyone else in the squad. Hopefully this is now a non-issue as he will be the first name on the team sheet every week

There is no doubt that O'Neil has improved the character of the eleven on the pitch but we've still looked desperately short of any class.
Obviously this lad can change that. He was immense

Far better shape to the team today with some guile from Powell, pace and goals from Campbell and the business of Allen who was superb. Indi had a decent game but add a new LB, Ryan and new goalie and we’ve got a very decent side.

So where are all the ones on here that were calling him biscuit legs and we should sell him in January. Play the lad in the right position and when fit this is what he will offer Stoke. Gouranga.

His finish was class he was never going to miss that.
After losing the ball a bit in the first 10 minutes he really did run the show.
4-2-3-1 please keep this going forward please and Nick Powell will change our team
