Since Stoke put a tweet out yesterday wishing him happy birthday he’s had nothing but abuse off so called Stoke fans on Twitter since about him leaving us🤔From what I’ve been told and I’m pretty sure Peter Thorne confirmed this in a recent interview Kav was sold because we needed the money🤔 I remember the abuse when he came back on the pitch but is it warranted now?

My favorite stoke player when i was a kid, was a mascot and he had a lot of time for us...then he fucked off. Mind you I'd never give him abuse

It happens. Remember Bertie Biggins kissing his badge and then was gone in no time. Player leaves for more money shock.
Some people just can't let go can they. Ridiculous to abuse him

Wasn't it more about when he said upon joining Cardiff, than simply the fact that he left?
As much as I gave him abuse at the time, I'm not sure I'd still be giving it the big one on Twitter nearly 20 years after it happened. We have slightly moved on since then.

He said Cardiff were a bigger club or words to that effect. He saw it as an upwards career move. I was never a fan of Kav for us but he did well for Wigan in the prem

I remember the Cardiff playoff at home when he was getting booed by each side of the stadium in turn as they were running across the pitch in the warm up.
And the 'Are you watching Kavanagh?' banner at the final v Brentford.
I think we loved him too much and then when he left and came out with the bigger club crap it felt like a betrayal.
Thought he was a great player but absolutely despised him when he left.

We have (and I bet it’s the same at other clubs) a long and inglorious record of misdirecting anger towards individuals associated with the club. It was at its worst when we were a ‘selling’ club. Sheron was an earlier example.

Thorne left at around the same time and didn't make any daft comments about Cardiff being bigger. As such, he didn't receive any stick, even when scoring a hat-trick against us.
Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if Sam Hamman put Kavanagh up to that.

He was 2 levels up from anyone else we had in midfield at the time I seem to recall, one of our few sellable assets, I was very sorry to see him go and don't much care what he did or didn't say, people are so precious.

People are precious about it, but it's easy to forget how odious Cardiff were around then in terms of their ownership and general attitude towards the league we were in. We had the last laugh at the end of the day, and my feelings towards Kavanagh are far more positive than they are negative. thetwounfortunates.com/unexpected-rivalries-7-stoke-city-and-cardiff-city/A decent article on the whole saga.

I fully understood the anger at the time, and the 'class' of Peter Thorne was in sharp contrast to the "billy big bollox" attitude of Kavanagh...which was totally uncalled for and tarnished what had been an excellent spell as a player at SCFC. To carry this on 20 years later is simply ridiculous. I saw Kav captain SCFC veterans in a 5 a side comp in Nottingham some years ago, he was still highly competitive and seemed to war the Stoke shirt with some fair degree of pride. I certainly felt no animosity to him then, nor do I now. Maybe we should put it down to the perils of social media and "keyboard warriors"...

"oh stoke have scored!"
I remember dancing around my kitchen with my dad and when the winner went in him smashing his knee quite badly on the coffee table! Very shit times....but some of the best!

I thought this was going to be a thread about him slotting back into our midfield. I'm convinced he still could! As for people giving him shit - he was quality for us. He was my hero when I was younger, I was heartbroken when he left but we needed the money - same for Thorne, see Duck for the details.

I was never a fan of Kav for us but he did well for Wigan in the prem Kav was stitched up his comments were about 'City' being a bigger club - that's because he was talking about Man City who he was expected to be joining that deal fell through & he then signed for Cardiff Stoke accidentally leaked his comments & we all assumed Kav was talking about Cardiff being a bigger club not sure who was Chief exec at that time, pre-Scholes I think.

I doubt the story about signing the shirt is true. Kav was never less than 100% fantastic with the kids when he was at Stoke in my experience. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him whether he was just out and about town with his own family, outside of training or on a matchday.
He was also a very good player for us who didn't want to leave when he did. He was effectively forced out by the club and I know for certain he was very hurt by being forced to move.

Some of those people on Twitter need to get a fucking life. The best part of quarter of a century later and they’re abusing the bloke. Kavanagh fucked up for sure with his comments (which with hindsight, if the stories are to be believed, were aimed at the ownership not the fans) but it’s embarrassing that people are still so bitter. I dare say if we were still in peak stokelona mode people wouldn’t be so petty.

Thought his comments had been twisted by the sent to look a lot worse than they were?
Let's not forget we had form for forcing people out the club and then making them out to be the bad guy (see Sheron)
Top player was Kav, my fave during the time he was with us

The fact Thorne pushed for the move and Kav didn't says it all., the abuse went to the wrong player.
The fact people still abuse him now shows how we still have a lot of whoppers in our fanbase.
I remember the abuse Demba Ba got from the fans because we chose not to sign him, absolute embarrassing and even more so when he went on to score a hat-trick.

Kav wanted a move,Thorne didn't. It was later revealed to not be the case and i'm pretty sure Thorne said so to some extent later on. Thorne pushed for a move but kept quiet. Kav was sold but was happy to stay, stupidly though said Cardiff were bigger, which at the time they were and it didn't go down well. Stoke in the past have asked players to suggest it was them requesting a move to take the heat off the club. If memory serves me right they did it with Higgy.

I grew up in the Seabridge area and used to regularly see Kav and his wife in and around Seabridge / Clayton / Westbury Park in the summer months as they were out walking. As a youngish whipper snapper I was always out on the bike with some red and white on and he always used to smile / acknowledge or speak when I whizzed past.
He seemed a nice bloke to be honest and his wife seemed nice too. They used to live on the nice housing estate just off to the right of Seabridge Lane about halfway up IIRC.
