I can see 4231 at home and 352 away as his standard, as he is clearly seeking to address our pretty woeful away form by making us tougher to beat on our travels.

Oh boy , MON is right we need a good start, build that elusive commodity momentum. Out on the 'B' of the Bang of the starters gun , if we're still allowed to quote Linford Christie!? Lets hope so Gods. In the past few seasons the lyrics from Pink Floyd's Time was more appropriate... 'No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun' Couldn't resist quoting my favourite Floyd track, a poignant ode to a life and opportunity ebbing away.

Who the hell invited that idiot along George Andrews🙄 Is that the 2nd interviewer? It really, really annoys me when an interviewer asks a question and doesn't pay any attention to the answer. Its just lack of basic journalism skills MON talks about the blend of experience and new blood in the squad for 2 minutes, and the following question is basically a repetition of the answer he has just been given He's fortunate that MON is so polite. I would have been tempted to ask if he had bothered listen to what had just been said to him. Apologies but I hate crap journalism esp when they stick to a list of question regardless of the answers they are given. The question about watching the opposition on videos is just inane. Angela is very good though! George Andrews could never be referred to as a journalist or even a broadcaster so what is he?

Yes mate that’s him alright🙄I would assume it’s because of his new job at another local radio station.Like you say he didn’t listen at all and I thought he just repeated what Ange had already asked O’Neill. How the bloke continues to call himself a journo I’ll never know but in my opinion the bloke should be nowhere near Stoke City press conferences when we all know he detests us

That has to be a contender for Colemanballs (if it still exists) - 'You don't win away in the Championship by outscoring the opposition.' I know exactly what he means but not quite true.

The man just oozes calmness, confidence and clarity.
How I ever fell under the spell of Nath "escaped from the asylum" Jones I'll never know.

I can see 4231 at home and 352 away as his standard, as he is clearly seeking to address our pretty woeful away form by making us tougher to beat on our travels. He'll mix it alright, but not on a Home and Away basis.
The key was in his interview (in bold):
"We’ve played 4-3-3 in three of the games and 3-5-2 in two of the games and I think that’s a nice thing to be able to do. It’s something you might change between games depending on the opposition"
If you are up against a team with only 1 main striker, you cannot go 3 at the back, since with 1 defender marking him and another covering, you've then got a spare defender with nothing to do. Instead you use a back 4, meaning one CB marks their striker, the other covers and the 2 FB's drop deep or push forward depending on what the opposition wide players are doing.
And if up against a team playing 4-3-3 with the two wide strikers pushing up, then you'll have 3-on-3 i.e. no spare cover.
You usually only deploy a back 3 when the opposition have 2 strikers up front, whether 4-4-2 or 3-5-2, since this gives you 2 defenders to mark them and the third to provide cover.
It was a feature of his selections with NI that he often tailored his teams depending on the opposition formation (though the need to win vs. the need to draw or avoid defeat, plus the overall strength or weakness of the opposition, came into it too).
At heart he's pragmatic, not wedded to any particular system or dogma.

That's a really good analysis, with some great points. Formation will inevitably impact his thoughts, as will the strength of the opposition. Three centre backs always feels such a waste when we are at home to weak opponents, who stick ten men behind the ball, when, as you say, with one up front, we can cover him by two centre backs, one marking, one dropping off.

I think the press conferences are a good insight for us fans to hear about the team his rationale etc. I like his honesty and realism. To be honest, I think he has the patience of a saint because some of the questioning (from 3 different people) is repetitive and sometimes a bit daft. This interview at nearly 17 minutes was too long imo.

Did he talk about injuries at all? I was working with it on in the background and when the questions started getting repeated half way through I drifted off

You’re not alone mucker, he fooled so many. I was a victim of that too! Style and competence are two different things Jones record at Luton stands up as , as good as O’Neil at stoke , clearly joes. Sue here was the environment and letting the job go to his head .what O’Neil nursing’s joes doesn’t is More life experience . Both are good managers at this level as this season and indeed last showed once jones was in his right environment
