Excellent interview that👍 What I like about MON is he isn’t shy about talking about systems and players and how certain players suit the various formations and ones that don’t. Whether you agree with him or not he generally puts his cards on the table. And yet another clean sheet for our (in some peoples opinion) dire defence.

Sounds like he's brought Fletcher in because he feels as though he's much more suited to a one up top system. Which is reassuring.

Thinking back to how Jones' interviews used to go & then listening to MO'N it's night & day. You could imagine our squad of ex-Premier League & International players looking at Jones & thinking "What the fuck is this idiot on about", whereas with MO'N you can imagine them looking up to him & really taking it all onboard & being prepared to run through brick walls for him. I really do feel we've got ourselves a proper good manager here, I genuinely think he can take us to heights that out-do what Pulis & Hughes managed.

There’s a quiet unassuming aura about him but I bet he can be a right cunt when he wants to be. And that’s management to a tee!

He takes any question straight on and in a measured way tells you what he thinks. You wouldn't think that was too much to ask but you don't get it from most football managers or indeed almost any politicians!

On that interview alone I’d say he’s the best Stoke manager I’ve ever known. How refreshing to hear a manager tell you what he really thinks with players and positions, and he didn’t have not one negative word to say.

Yes very open and informative. Clearly sees Powell as playing in the three rather than as a number 10 whatever set up we have.

Quality interview. takes all questions head on. honest answers. will have been encouraging for the youngsters to hear that they are 'first team' quality. clearly they will still need to fight to get in it regularly though.
Encouraged for this season.

If we play with a back 3 regularly (and it is sounding more and more like Plan A), does McClean start on the bench?

I said in another thread I like the way, He’s looked at the squad and realised the strikers are best suited to playing with a partner and with the players we have had finally decided that 3atb is best suited (rightly or wrongly I don’t really care). I feel as though we’ll be a solid and functional team (almost Germany like) industrial like that will be effective if not super exciting.

Think Fox will replace Indi as left side CB and JM back as wing back. Fox played in a back 3 few times last season. This would also give us bit more pace at back and more natural cover when JM caught out of position.

This would also give us bit more pace at back and more natural cover when JM caught out of position. Makes sense but would we be a bit lacking in height at the back. Corners would be okay as our midfield is tall and Fletcher/Vokes but we might be vulnerable on crosses from open play if Chester and Fox are in the back three

Well from that we know 352 is plan A
We know Powell is now considered a midfielder in that system.
He rates Gregory and Vokes in a front 2.
He knows the young lads can come in and do a a decent job.
He knows how he's going to set up initially for the championship.
Where this leaves Ince is anyone's guess.

Suppose it depends how often we're going to play the wing-back system, and to what extent it's the primary option? Half the games? Three quarters? Mind you, you'd think Campbell would be first choice on the right when we don't (and we may yet bring another wide option in) It doesn't look good for him. Think he did play centrally, just behind the striker in a Number Tenny kind of role against Leeds last week where he apparently played well. So could he be some kind of Powell alternative there? Hard to see him getting many minutes though. Would MON let him go JUST to shed his wages though - for a loan with a modest wage contribution? Can't see it - and if that's the case, hard to see him going anywhere this summer

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-live-press-conference-4502045Are your expectations as high as the fans?Well...! I’m not sure really given that we obviously don’t have the stadium but I think after any disappointing season you have to have high expectations or it’s a pointless exercise. We are pleased with how pre-season has gone and there has been a real focus on starting the season well, which is something we haven’t done in the last couple of seasons. We’re not looking any further ahead than that. We’re focusing on making sure we start well. Then we can develop on that, develop the team and build confidence and momentum and not put ourselves in the position we’ve been in previously. I think the squad is in a good place. I believe it’s stronger than where we were in the past. Are you happier with the balance of the squad?Yes. We had to be adaptable and get players who could play in either system, which was important for us as well. We now have a natural left-back at the club, which is something we haven’t had for a while, certainly in the second half of last season. I think we’ve got good experience in the spine of the team. We’ve real quality that Steven Fletcher, John Obi Mikel and James Chester bring as well. We’re pleased with where we are at this minute in time but ultimately we’ll have a clearer view of where we are once we get into competitive action. It’s a tough league and we have to prove ourselves. Our away form has to be better than it was last season and we get the opportunity to address that on Saturday. Millwall will be a tough game to start?Yes it is but I think when you look through the division, I think every week you’re going in to play against teams which have similar aspirations to yourselves. Millwall last season were pushing for a play-off place and just missed out in the end but they had a very good season. They’ve established themselves in the Championship. It’s a very tough game but if we’re going to do anything this season we have to be prepared to deal with these kind of games and always try to take three points. Take heart from pre-season games? We’ve played 4-3-3 in three of the games and 3-5-2 in two of the games and I think that’s a nice thing to be able to do. It’s something you might change between games depending on the opposition but also something you may have to do in-game as well in relation to what is happening. The most pleasing aspect for me has been the clean sheets. We kept clean sheets against Newcastle, against Leeds and against Blackpool and I think that’s going to be very important to continue, particularly away from home. I don’t think you win games in the Championship away from home by outscoring the opposition that many times. It’s difficult to do that. You have to be tight, you have to be difficult to beat and you have to be prepared to win games 1-0 or 2-1 and what we’re seeing at this minute in time is a resilience in the squad. That’s important. There are aspects, I still think, that we need to sharpen up. Our creativity at times and our productivity with the ball in the final third but I’m sure that will progress with the return of competitive action and with each game we play. With a short off-season do you think fitness levels are as good as you want them to be?We’re fine. I have no concerns about that. The players are in a good place. Paul Walsh has come in as head of sports science and he’s pleased with where the players are as well. Physically we look in very good shape. We only have Joe (Allen) really as a long-term injury now and Thibaud Verlinden just starting back to train. Other than that everyone was back in training today and that’s a sign of where the fitness levels are as well.

Who the hell invited that idiot along George Andrews🙄 Is that the 2nd interviewer? It really, really annoys me when an interviewer asks a question and doesn't pay any attention to the answer. Its just lack of basic journalism skills MON talks about the blend of experience and new blood in the squad for 2 minutes, and the following question is basically a repetition of the answer he has just been given He's fortunate that MON is so polite. I would have been tempted to ask if he had bothered listen to what had just been said to him. Apologies but I hate crap journalism esp when they stick to a list of question regardless of the answers they are given. The question about watching the opposition on videos is just inane. Angela is very good though!
