And before that he played 136 games and scored 30 goals. It's very common for strikers to go through purple patches at a club for a season or 2 then move and totally flop. I remember Carl Saunders scoring a goal a game for a few months and then not being able to hit a cows arse with a banjo. The lad's only 24, those 136 games were probably when he was learning his trade. Look at Harry Kane, does fuck all (flops at a number of champ clubs) until he was 21ish and turns into a world class striker. Same with loads of strikers, judging them before they've come of age isn't productive. I was just about to mention Kane. Some players are late developers, some are 1 season wonders. Only hindsight tells you which way they go

Could easily see Gregory sold at the end of the season, his wages and fee for sale would probably cover both of these and help with FFP.

I didn't want either of them at the club either. Respectfully that wasn’t my question .... Totally different scenario isn't it. Both those players are seasoned championship players albeit not good enough for a club who's jus spent 10 years in the Prem and has promotion aspirations. I just don't see the point in taking more risks with players when we've already got a bloated squad. We're not going to get promoted this season so a pool of Vokes, Campbell, Diouf and Ngoy is sufficient until the summer. In the summer we'd have Diouf, Afobe and Gregory all off the wage bill and we can spend those wages on a proven championship striker (Gayle) and go for a promotion push.

Thankfully the managers of the clubs signing Robert Snodgrass, Graham Dorrans, Will Vaulks, Kevin MacDonald, Lyle Taylor and our very own Harry Souttar recognised there's value to be had in the Scottish Championship if you do your homework......

There are football people around you know who can spot a proper player whatever standard that player is performing in at the time.
Our problem has been that we have had no one who could do this for some time now, hence the poor recruitment.
The obvious players spring to mind who have been mentioned previously such as Stein and Sheron who were both struggling when we brought them in.
Going back farther John Ritchie was playing for Kettering,John Mahoney for Crewe, Terry Conroy playing for a small club in Ireland.
We just have to hope that our current Manager and his staff have this ability. It is about time that someone at the Club was capable of it.

Our 10 years in the Premiership is meaningless - as far as any ambitious player (and their agent) is concerned we're just another medium sized midlands club struggling to make a go of it in the Championship. We aren't going to get out of this division by deluding ourselves that we're going to attract top class players - it isn't going to happen. What's left of the Premiership squad will be dismantled over the summer and our best bet is to build a team around a few seasoned old Championship quality pros and some up and coming hungry younger players under the radar of the clubs actually in the Premiership. You don't build a squad that can compete in the Premiership when you're in the Championship - you build a squad good enough to get you out of the Championship and then build a Premiership squad when you're in a position to attract better players. I'd far rather we took a chance on Cosgrove or Shankland as and when they become available rather than pin our hopes on a player like Gayle who has already shown he doesn't want to come here and for a striker is probably now approaching his sell by date.

It may be that he comes back to try again, or goes off elsewhere, unless someone makes us an offer we can't refuse!

With talk of yet another bullshit takeover for the magpies, gayle will stick in there on his 60k wages , bruce will say hes part of his plans and then he will get fuck all game time. Such a shame that someone doesnt aspire to get game time more

While fully acknowledging our current shortcomings up top, I've never been entirely sure we need ano striker this window (unless, of course, a real prospect comes available at a decent price).
So Shankland's non-availability and Cosgrove's reportedly non-decent price is no disaster.
Neither is that to support more playing time for Gregory or Diouf - I'd have 'em both out the door today.
So in that respect alone (one in means one of these won't be going out) it is a set back but not a disaster for me.

If we're talking Scottish players or players in Scotland, has anyone seen Liam Donnelly play? Northern Irish lad who is in the current squad. Seemed to start off as a right back but has shifted into midfield and apparently played in a number of different positions, and scored 5 in 10, for Motherwell including DM, CM and RM. www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-donnelly/leistungsdaten/spieler/211121not seen him but seen Lawrence Shankland of Dundee united play a few times, would be worth keeping an eye on him when they get promoted to see if he can keep up the scoring Not a bad shout a few weeks ago

I'd much sooner have Cosgrove, all Shankland has is goals so if he doesn't score in the Championship he'd offer nothing.
Cosgrove's got enough pace, really physical and would just be an absolute nuisance if nothing else. Not to mention he has a good scoring record in a higher division...

Shanks will score in the EFL, an out and out 6 yard box sniffer, rarely misses the target. I don't care what league you're in, if you throw enough shit at the wall, some will stick. I watched him come to Tannadice with Ayr last season and bag 4......then they signed him.

If that's all he offers why have we just got rid of hogan? I'd say a 6 yard sniffer is exactly what we don't need as a lone striker. Can someone more knowledgeable on this guy confirm he isn't just a goal poacher with little else to his game?

I have no idea about this lad so don’t know what he’s about but until the side becomes better then we need someone who does more. However, I think it’s some confidence away from being able to do it. But that relies on Powell staying fit.
