09-10 he played 36 of 38 league games, 33 in the starting 11 10-11 he played 37 of 38 league games, 31 in the starting 11 Definitely shunted in and out 😂 It always the case he was covering for someone though. Whelan for extended spell and then injuries. My memory tells me different. Pulis would play him no matter what, then he’d miss a game, usually through suspension and we’d play a whole lot better. Then we’d rinse and repeat it. Whitehead was crap and played far too often. Not dissimilar to Joe Allen in many ways. Paid a stupid fee for him and he made us worse than we were before he came.

I just can’t let a dean whitehead thread pass without saying how shit he was

It always the case he was covering for someone though. Whelan for extended spell and then injuries. Definitely covering, yeah 😂 Only Delap made more starts than Whitehead in 09-10 from the entire squad, and in 10-11 only Delap and Kenwyne Jones. During the same time Whelan came off the bench 23 times vs Whitehead’s 9 times. But you’re right, he never cemented his place. This should end the debate really. He was a mainstay in the team for two seasons. You don’t do that by covering for someone, not when there are two-three transfer windows during that period.

He wasn't crap, he was steady, solid or whatever, did what he was asked, played most games for 2 seasons, the FA Cup run, Europa games, scored only a few goals, but a couple were winners to change 1 point to 3 and keep us above the relegation zone.

He cost what was a pretty big fee by the standards of the time and was still a downgrade on our first choice midfield of that time.

A key component of one of the best squads in the clubs history.
Top professional. Great times.

Don’t get the hate towards him, always put a shift in when he played for Stoke.

We have had far more skilful and naturally talented players.
But I’m not sure we’ve had too many who were as versatile or committed. Let’s not forget the level of players he was facing with us too.
I’m guessing he’d have stood out a lot more in the Championship as a very effective midfielder.

I’m not sure that transfers into the Championship.

Don’t get the hate towards him, always put a shift in when he played for Stoke. He’s the embodiment of the hard-working, unglamorous, at times downright ugly Pulis era. For all the success he had at Stoke, Pulis remains a highly divisive character. The Whitehead debate is more or less a Pulis debate by proxy.

Crazy views prevailed along the lines you needed to have 10 Bojans on the park. We signed Whitehead to do a much needed job and by and large he did it very effectively.

I don't think it was remotely about having 10 Bojans on the park, it's more that for what we paid for him, Whitehead was an incredibly basic, meat and potatoes version of the kind of midfielder he was. He was never at any stage of his time here part of our best XI. He wasn't as good as Delap or Whelan, and the league was scattered with better, cheaper versions of him around that time.

Couldn’t disagree more , he was a good at doing what we needed. The abuse that he got came from the same school that thought Jon Walters was an insult to their football aesthetics.

Which bit do you disagree with, specifically? Walters was miles more effective in his role than Whitehead was in his.
