It's been mentioned many times regarding O'Neill's appointment but there as been a steady slide since Hughes was sacked.
Lambert Prem experience, promotion experience Rowett Championship experience, No promotion Jones League1/2 experience, L2 promotion experience O'Neill Scottish div 2/Irish league experience
It seems we are placing all our hopes on him converting his International achievements into club level and a club level way beyond his previous.
This is a coin toss situation, could go either way.

Jones was the big risk and he oversaw our biggest fall. Lambert was a stupid one to let go, given that his record in better than Rowett. Rowett was done by the pressure put on by fans and his inability to accept it. Jones was just incompetent. O’Neill is likely the best option from anyone who would want the position.

Spiral - we don't choose them when we can, we fail, we then no longer have the option of choosing them. MON is probably no more or less of a gamble than Pardew, say. Who would we really want for this job - Allardyce, Moyes, Hughton, Warnock, Bruce, Neil - none of those would come. Then we are into the realm of those that bring other sorts of risk: Pearson? Grayson? Would have personally sacked Jones at the end of last season when it was abundandly clear he was out of his depth and gone for Monk, assuming none of the aforementioned would come, or better still - a DOF from setups at Dortmund/Atletico/Valencia/Ajax et al, and Monk as first team coach.

O'Neill is a big risk. I really hope it works.... but i said the same about Jones. There's a world of difference between international and club management as shown by recent England managers.

A club like ours has two choices:
A) Short-term boring manager who's going to keep you up, but will inevitably get the sack in two seasons' time when everyone's bored shitless with him.
B) Hungry and inexperienced manager who hopefully plays some decent football and may possibly take the club to the 'next level'.
When A gets the inevitable sack, the fans want B. If he fails, the fans want an A. Ad infinitum.

Eddie Howe went from being a player to reserve team coach for a few months to manager at Bournemouth when Quinn was sacked. No doubt Google can list the experience of all managers but Howe is one that comes to mind.

O’Neill is a better manager that we could have hoped to get given our situation. He has managed to get performances out of average players against some of the best teams in the world with minimal preparation time.

We desperately, desperately needed somebody with experience or pedigree at this level and we get a manager who has managed Shamrock Rovers and who is in rehab trying to get his driving ban down and who his doing the NI job at the same time as the Stoke job. We should have appointed a new manager and the end of last season when NJ had proved he was clearly not up for the job and then again we had a chance at the last international break. Then when the shit hits the fan apparently John goes on a 3-week sabbatical and by now when it is possibly too late he appoints somebody with absolutely no experience in English football management whatsoever and a man who is doing 2 jobs at once. And all they could say is that he seemed eager to do the job and that is why we gave it him - fecking shocking The egos that run our club are incapable of going cap in hand to the best manager for the job and selling our club and the only criteria for the post seems to be a bit of enthusiasm for taking the post(See PL, NJ and now MO) add that with a bit of xenophobia and that is why we are heading for tier 3/4. They have to go - they are fecking clueless MO is yet another hopeful punt

We must wish him well but it's a bit of a gamble at least for one with no experience in managing an English football league club.
Nathan had no experience either at the higher levels.
If this latest appointment doesn't work. I'd have to say the Coates family should sell the club to somebody with a new plan-you are fuckin brain-addled.

Got to admit I would have much prefered an experienced league option and i'm sure they would have also made an impact.
Mon's line up yesterday made me chuckle a bit, i've been quietly thinking we should maybe revert back to a 433 with ince in his best position and mclean the otherside now we have gregory. I think the missing link was playing gregory at CF as he is a worker and a good link player wheras afobe is a poacher.
Also must admit that i like the look & sound of O'neill and the comparisons to ferguson in the way he conducts himself even to chewing gum (a heavy thinkers trait) are uncanny.
Hopefully its not just a new manager bounce and these kind of performances become common place.
Special mention to clucas aswell, the best striker of a football at the club for me, always cleanly hits the ball given the chance.
Tony fucking scholes, wind your neck in and know your role or fuck off.

If he can convert his International record to club level, all good but there's a distinct difference between the two. It's very much a fence sitting post regards O'Neill, I was just pointing out that after Lambert, the managers we have appointed have basically taken us to their relative expertise. Rowett with Championship experience got us to mid table before sacking Jones with L1 experience was taking us to L1 before sacking. Hence the non committal on O'Neill

Debating skills of a pre-pubescent newt mate, well done you! It probably would have helped if you had actually responded to the original post and not just spouted something vaguely relatable in response to what you thought the OP was saying. There’s quite clearly no expectation in that post other than perhaps an implied expectation of the club to have arrested a decline more quickly. It’s pretty simple really, a short text lamenting the perceived decline in the quality of club management over the recent years. And defensive much? You started calling people tits and then it’s you who baulks at someone saying arsehole. But you did at least appear to get one thing right, you may well have the debating skill of a pre-pubescent newt.
