Just checked photos of the away end at the Oakwell ground, it was similar to Vale and the Hamil Rd end, I'd say 4000 maximum. So there you have it, we took about 3000 as there was space at the sides, as I was there so I should know!! Oakwell's capacity in 1988/89 was nearly 37,000 so that away terrace almost certainly held more than 4,000. The gate for the replay was over 21,000. We played them earlier in the season in the league and the crowd was under 6,000.

I was referring to the same poster's comment about yesterday's following. From the stories I've read and heard, I can well believe there were many more in 1989. I didn't go - was only a nipper. I went the 3 all in the first game though, which was a cracker.

Simon Lowe's Stoke City The Modern Era book gives it as 6,000
I remember there being a Sentinel article on it several years ago which started a discussion on here. The article was on their old website so is no longer available.

I was there too, I just remember it being rammed and uncomfortable, seeing an overspill going into the seats. Oh and those bleedin pink panthers all over the shop!! Who was there forward with gypo style black hair, bit of a poser but could bloody finish ?? David Currie? They also had another forward that did the Beagrie back flip when he scored (which I think he did that night). Steve Cooper?

It doesn't really matter what the official attendance was, you can add 1000 plus on to that for those that got in free when the police opened the gates.

Had there been more Stoke supporters on the away terrace that night we could have suffered that awful disaster. Same situation, same police force, same reaction. We, like all football supporters, were actually riding our luck, not just on that night, but for so many years.

We, like all football supporters, were actually riding our luck, not just on that night, but for so many years. This is so true, my own story doesn't involve Stoke but Celtic. I went to the first game of the season in 1988 to see the Champions flag unfurled. The ground was way over full and I was on the terrace behind the goal known as the "Rangers end " It officially held 18,000 but there were many more on it for this game. At the end of the game the crowd developed a crush moving down steep stairs to an exit, an exit also being used by fans exiting the Jungle- which was a terrace which ran alongside the pitch- also overfull. No one had control of their body, my feet were not on the ground, and my chest was tight. We seemed to approach the gates in a series of surges while moving downwards. You can tell when you are one notch from panic because there is silence, no one talking , everyone focused. If one person had gone down we would have had a catastrophe - very frightening and just like Barnsley a clear prediction of what was to come in Sheffield

I went to this game traffic was awful and everyone seemed to arrive together causing the crush.I would estimate around 5000 Stoke there that night.
Not a patch on the crush a few years later at Rotherham coming out the ground into that alley. Now that was scary.

From Stoke's programme the week after the game: well that finishes off the poster who said "3,000, no more no less" Strangely I think he made the same comment on the photo of the Stoke support at Barnsley on saturday. We were allocated three out of four blocks in a stand with a capacity of 6,200...so we had at least 4,500 seats and he insists we had "no more ,no less than 3,000" Fans. There are clearly some empty seats,,,but nowhere near 1,500 and any one with reasonable vision can see that - certainly closer to 4,000 rather than 3,000

I'm not going to argue about the size, it was a few thousand ... What I do remember was being scared witless being crushed and then when the gates were opened I was half carried through my feet only touching the floor every eight feet or so. This was three months before Hillsborough and lessons were very clearly not learned, how people were not trampled I have no idea. I also remember the police not giving a shit and taking a few whacks as people flooded past. I vowed not to go back to Oakwell ever again. Thirty years later I did return on Saturday, the away end fortunately unrecognisable as the nightmare terrace has long gone and boy what return, what a great away day. I might have turned past the 50 mark now but I felt like a teenager again, the 3rd and 4th mentals were something special

Can't recall the back flip, but if memory serves Currie hit the bar with an effort attacking the goal we were behind? The replay was a real anticlimax given the away following and the buzz of the last 20 or so minutes at the Vic.

The replay was a real anticlimax given the away following and the buzz of the last 20 or so minutes at the Vic. They went a goal up before we'd managed to get in. Anti-climax doesn't do it justice. Steve Cooper was the guy who did the Beagrie back flip. He'd been a schoolboy gymnast. The info isn't easy to find as to who scored for them in the replay, but I have a hazy memory of him celebrating the winning goal with his trademark somersault in the replay, and the Barnsley supporters thread I posted earlier seems to indicate that he was the scorer. I hadn't realised til reading this thread that he'd sadly died at 39.

Have a look at that end, 6000 is a lot of people, do you really think that end would hold 6000 because I don't
