How refreshing watching a pair of England openers leaving the ball and making the bowlers bowl to them.

Poor shot from Sibley, he looked solid as well.....

Sibley is going to have to work out pretty quickly how to score on the offside or his international career won’t last very long.

Sibley is going to have to work out pretty quickly how to score on the offside or his international career won’t last very long. He seems to be able to leave the ball outside his off stump very well though - which is a big plus for an opener. I’d wait till he has had a longer knock before judging his ability to score on the off side. It could well be he limits himself to scoring off his legs early in his innings. A certain Mr Cook was similar.

Good old fashioned day of cricket I enjoyed it.
Couple of poor dismissals but NZ bowled well with little help. Need to go on and hit 450 here as the pitch will be flat as a pancake tomorrow.......

Did you watch it all? I watched the first 45 minutes or so and caught the last 10 overs. I’m pleased to see us playing test cricket - but a little disappointed with some of the dismissals. The two critical components of test batting is to defend well which includes leaving the ball outside off early in the innings and converting starts into three figure scores. Root was the only one who messed up on the first of those while Burns and Denly failed on the latter. On the positive side Sibley looked the part, Burns and Denly both got runs, Stokes continues to impress while Pope has made a good start. As you say, we need plenty more runs tomorrow. It looks like there are plenty of runs in that pitch.

A certain Mr Cook was similar. He left the ball superbly and didn’t miss out on anything on his pads. He doesn’t appear to have any clear deficiencies in his defensive technique which will serve him well. It will be interesting to see if he can develop his off-side game because his open stance makes it difficult for him to drive anything full.

Solid and no thrills start to an away Test Match is like music to my ears. Fingers crossed we can get above 400 at least as the pitch sounds like a road from what I heard on TMS. Hope Ollie Pope plays well, has the makings of being a real star.

He was trying to play a ball through wide mid wicket that should have been played straighter, certainly no wider than mid on. It’s a vulnerability that New Zealand will have noticed - he can expect plenty of full deliveries on or just outside off stump shaping to the slips. Test cricket is tough. Bowlers have the ability to target weaknesses in batsmen’s techniques. It’s up to batsmen to come up with answers.

This side just looks balanced compared to the one that played in the Ashes. Really like Pope and hope he can push on tomorrow to something big. Denly played decently and Sibley and Burns did what openers should do and took the shine off the new ball. Much much better!

It's quite a slow pitch and hard to score on, so if we can accumulate 450 I think the game's ours, there's a little bit of swing as well which will hopefully help Curran and Broad.....

It seems a bit of a novelty not being 50-4. The challenge now is to build on the start and make sure we build a decent first innings score. It is nearly 2 years since we topped 400 in the first innings of a Test match.

Three quick wickets and suddenly we’ve gone from bossing the game to being in danger of getting a well below par first innings score.
All of yesterday’s hard work being undone by 15 minutes of madness.

Don’t know how Archer is still batting at 9. He’s the definition of a walking wicket.

Don’t know how Archer is still batting at 9. He’s the definition of a walking wicket. Archer has had 8 innings and hit 52 at average of 6.5 Leach's average is 18 but has proved he can stick around and Broad's average is 19 with 3000 runs under his belt Leach should be 9, Broad at 10 and Archer at 11

Are we imbalanced or are our top order just consistently poor?
Buttler batting at 8 would indicate a ridiculously good batting line up but is then followed by 9, 10 and Jack and we dont seem to bat that "deep"
Broad cant bat since being hit with that rocket from the Sri Lankan lad a few years back and Archer looks like he bats 11 for Caverswall?

Buttler is 7 , Curran is 8. The team looks as balanced as it has in a long time to be fair, we've just played some poor shots when we were in the ascendancy. Still not convinced by Curran as 3rd seamer though (yet)
