England’s tour of New Zealand is underway kicking off with 5 T20s starting tomorrow morning (1st Nov at 01.00 GMT). Plenty of young lions on show. Let’s hope for some great cricket. A pleasant distraction from other topics over the next few weeks. C’mon England

Right - 1st T20 done and a comfortable win for England by7 wickets with an over and a half to spare.
Main man was Vince with 59 off 38 balls. Bairstow and Morgan chipped in with some runs.
Two gripes though...
I don’t think I’ll be getting to see much live cricket - that game started at 1 and was done before 5.
More seriously, I was hoping to see some young blood in the top order batting. Instead we got Milan and Vince at #2 and #3. I understood we are using this series looking ahead to the next T20 world cup in two years. Neither of those two should be in the side for that tournament. They’ve both had opportunities and not taken them. Instead we need to start blooding the youngsters who excelled in the Blast in the summer. Hopefully they’ll get a shot soon.

I watched the start but fell asleep half way through NZ’s innings, woke up in time for England’s innings only to nod back off again just before Vince got out.
Not a huge fan of T20 cricket at the best of times, but it was fairly dull stuff on a placid wicket.....

Cracking day at the office for Vince. 3 dropped catches and then out for 1 to a feeble waft of the bat.....

Cracking day at the office for Vince. 3 dropped catches and then out for 1 to a feeble waft of the bat..... That’s Vince for you. A class act, but lacks something. What he needed today was a dominant performance following on from his MOTM performance in the first T20. Instead he produces a WOTM showing. Appreciate this assessment is harsh based on this one T20, but it’s consistent with his performances across all formats of international cricket. A player with so much quality but so little output. Anyway. A disappointing defeat. But, that’s the nature of T20. Very hard to make up ground when you lose a bunch of early wickets.

I actually stayed up in the end, just as I was about to turn it off Jordan hit 24 off an over to put us back in it. But then succumbed to the same dismissals as most of the team, Gregory then did the same in the next over after just hitting a six when all he needed to do was push the last ball for a single and keep the strike. Having a batting line up with Billing as high as 5 and Curran at 6 is way too light.....

England making an absolute pigs ear of this run chase after being 135/2, now 150/7 chasing 180.
I have to say the next generation of T20 cricketers so far have been completely uninspiring......

England making an absolute pigs ear of this run chase after being 135/2, now 150/7 chasing 180. I have to say the next generation of T20 cricketers so far have been completely uninspiring...... There is a huge gap between the standards in domestic and international cricket. We saw that last year when Mo returned to Worcestershire after an appalling run with the bat for England and started smashing the ball to all parts in the Blast. To play sport at the highest level you need both good technique and a strong temperament. The county game doesn’t provide a suitable environment for that to develop sufficiently. So, we have the Lions team and tours like this which hopefully helps bridge the gap. Not ideal, as we will have some bumps along the way, but it is what it is. I wonder if this problem is the main motivation behind The Hundred. Not that the playing format offers very much different to T20 (it doesn’t). Rather it breaks the stranglehold counties have on the domestic game and produces, with its franchised, auction model, a much higher standard of cricket. Anyway, interesting to see Vince turn in another good but not quite good enough performance with the bat. Malan also chipped with a good knock. If these two are the best of the rest though, we are in trouble if any of our front line team aren’t available.

If these two are the best of the rest though, we are in trouble if any of our front line team aren’t available. Not seen much of Gregory for example, is he meant to be a batsmen that bowls or a bowler that bats? On the evidence of the last two games he does neither particularly well. And from Billing down every player bar the number 11 is batting 1 or 2 places too high. A nice knock from Vince but not a match winning one, again his shot to get out was lame. It’s a bizarre line up, and the World Cup is only round the corner. On this evidence the likes of Moeen, Wood, Woakes, Root etc have got nothing to worry about....

Bloody typical, I’ve sat through the last 2 games which were dross, got in the car early to leave for Northampton this morning so couldn’t watch Malan and Morgan’s devastating innings.....

I couldn't be bothered watching it after our last couple of performances - just typical that something like that happens. A very comfortable 76 runs victory as well.

Great to see England do so well.
But...
The key though, of course, is doing it when matters. Smashing a half arsed New Zealand bowling attack in a low key series is one thing. Delivering the goods in key games against top competition in knock out competition is something different.
That said Malan has cemented his place in the T20 squad with that knock. And good luck to him. I’m happy if he is ahead of Vince in the selection.

17 for England, decent but the ground’s tiny. 3 short I reckon.
Jordan to bowl...

Always good to win a series - well done England.
What have we learned though?
Our first 11 is the best we have - and they are very good. Our established back up is better than the upcoming young guns. The only problem is there still remains question marks over the back up. Sure they can fire. But can they perform when it really counts against the best. So far they haven’t. I still think there is an opportunity for a young player to come through for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Anyway, onto the short test series.
As ever, with the red ball game, all eyes will be on the top order especially on the new boy who scored a hatful of runs last summer. Interesting that Bairstow has been called up as cover for Denly. That must mean they see him playing at #3 if he does play. It would be great if he could perform there - but he must sort out his defence.

Bairstow is closer to being a tailender than a #3 the amount of times he gets bowled, he's a lower order batsman in Test Cricket now. He's had the best part of 2 years to sort his defence out and has failed spectacularly.

Looking forward to some test cricket tonight. I like the look of our side, although lacking in experience there’s a solid look about our batting line up.
Still think we’re a good seamer short without Anderson and will be relying heavily on Archer again.
New Zealand are a very decent side and will be too strong for us in their own conditions I think but looking forward to what should be a decent couple of matches.

The eleven looks very interesting; Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, Joe Denly, Joe Root (capt), Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Jofra Archer, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad Looks like a much better balance. Good to see Pope and Curran given a shot. In particular Curran who needs to show he has what it takes to be a front line seamer.

I fear Southee, Boult and Wagner will run through that line up like a hot knife through butter if they get any sort of movement. I like Curran but he is really a batting all rounder, a fourth seamer like Stokes, would have preferred Mahmood or Jamie Overton until Anderson / Wood is back.

Kane Williamson is yet to score a test hundred against us. Playing on his home ground you can treble your money if you back him to score a ton in the match.

I might have to put a fiver on to Jonah him, for my money he is the best batsman in the world doesnt get the credit as he only plays for NZ but he has a touch of class about the way he plays and acts unlike Smith and Kohli who are / can be massive bellends. Root is in with that group in terms of ability but needs to start pushing on and scoring big no more pretty 60s or 80s he needs to be hitting 150s on a regular basis.
