I was actually looking forward to reading this thread about a great servant of ours who was a major part of our success yet it's already descending into inane nit picking critism. Why cant we just appreciate what he achieved with us? The need to always replace him? 😂 Some players become better players or prove their worth the more competition they are given. 291 appearances for us with vast majority in the Premier League is a fantastic record for any player.

He was fine for us. This misty eyed crap about him though makes me laugh.

Nothing misty eyed at all, him and Ryan are the only constant through the best Stoke period in many years. £1.5m for the both of them!!!

He’d be wank one season then great the next, then average. As I’ve said I always liked him (he’d frustrate the hell out of me with his inconsistency) but he doesn’t get in my Stoke PL best XI.

Cor that's a good one. What is the best Stoke Premiership 11? Probably deserves a thread all of its own. Come on Bayern start the thread

I would actually argue that Whelan was one of the most consistent players we've ever had. People can argue whether they appreciated what he offered the team but for me he was consistency personified, cover, tackle and play it simple.

One of those about who you could definitely say that you do not realise what you have got until you haven't got it. "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

You must really despise Keane to rate him so poorly.

The worst performance in that time had him starting. I didn’t watch a game after that had less effort in or less anything that constitutes football. Spurs away, 4-0. Would have been 8 had they not give up at half time. I liked Whelan overall but the he played well every 4 games comment is spot on. And the rot had set in on his watch. He was part of the problem Hughes made. We got rid at the right time. Yes, we really improved after he was replaced by Darren Fletcher. You've pointed out the problem perfectly there, it wasn't that Whelan went it was who he was replaced with.

He was one of our best players in one of our best periods End Thread 500k for a such a player was one of TP's best signings. ironically he was a lampard / gerrard type, always trying to push on and get a goal from just outside the box, at Sheffield Wednesday and he did it well and scored some crackers completely changed his game for TP and was much more defensive And played that role well too A proper footballer
