massively surprised to read that he only scored 5 for us in 31, I even checked his wiki, thinking it must be a mistake,
he was more than goals, his work rate and commitment was probably what made him so popular, but still thought it was a lot more than 5

Make no mistake, for that 15 game spell in the back end of 13/14 he was as good as anyone we had in our time in the PL. He produced 9 goals (6 goals, 3 assists) in those 15 games. I think there's debate over one of his goals v West Ham where it basically hit him on the goal-line. Some give it to Crouch, others to Odemwingie.

Such a bizarre one, he was in no way what we could have expected.
What we were sold: old and over the hill, bad attitude and inevitably rusty as he'd not played regular football in forever. What we got: Our most effective striker in the Premier League and a fantastic work rate and attitude.
It's funny with Hughes, amongst a squad of hard working grafters he seemed to really be able to get the odd troubled player (Erik, Arnie, Wingie) and get the absolute best out of them. I think we just then tried that as a transfer policy and it was just poison.

He doubled down on risk, when you look at what those 3 players in particular were picked up for, it's a third of what Imbula cost. It's fine when a punt doesn't work out, not so fine you spunk most of your budget on an already risky acquisition.

Swapping Kenwyne for Odemwingie is probably up there as some of the best business we did in the Premier League.

I think we just then tried that as a transfer policy and it was just poison. Unfortunately Hughes’s overall success rate in turning players around i am guessing was <50% and, as a result, very expensive. successes: Odenwingie, Arni, Shaq, Bojan, BMI failures: Shea, wollscheidt, Wimmer, Berahino, Imbula, Jesé the overall return on investment in purely financial terms was very negative just on the basis of transfer fees and wages. The cost of relegation significantly confounded the financial situation. Our loans exceed the value of our assets (resale value of players, which are depreciating rapidly), and future expenses (mainly wages) will significantly exceed our income unless we are promoted this season or next. The only other way to reduce our expenses is get rid of our best players, which reduces our chances of promotion. FFP rules prevent BET365 bailing us out, because it will result in points deduction. Pieters was signed before Hughes and was never really a problem.

Shea was signed by Pulis, Jese was only on loan and Wollscheid, while not the best player in the world, did put in some good performances from time to time in a side that was our most successful during Hughes' time here.

Fair play to him. I know he's worked exceptionally hard on his golf with help from a pro called Richard O'Hanlon.
He must have got his handicap down to at least 4 which is no mean feat when you saw what his swing was like. He's always loved his golf though. Remember his corner challenge for Soccer AM alongside Butland and Adam and he was practicing his golf swing during that.

I stand corrected on Shea. Wollscheidt was a donkey - he’s not even playing profession football - and was very disruptive. However, loan or not, Jesé was a disaster. Contributed nothing on the pitch, cost wage money, had a disruptive attitude and took up a valuable place in the squad. If you say that I blame Hughes in large part for the mess we’re in an agenda, I stand guilty as charged. He’s a fraud. I don’t like him, never have, never will.

Good luck to him! I’ve often thought that if I won the lottery I would dedicate loads of time to seriously improving my golf. He’s living my dream!
