6 qualifying groups of 6 teams 10 games Champions League clubs would be allowed to have squads of 40 players to cope with extra games So non-Champions League teams take the pick of the rest Loads of quality players (probably English) playing only a handful of games a season but getting loads of dosh for it Butland might get to be Man City's 4th goalkeeper unless Federici beats him to it

40 man squad is ridiculous. It will lead to big clubs hoovering up even more young talented players and then not actually playing them enough to allow them to develop. I give you Delph, Barkley, Sinclair ...

Doesn't make sense though, no one wants more games with shite players?
If they want to lower the amount of games go straight to knock outs, pick a different host country every year and play every game in a neutral stadium or something so there's only one fixture each time.
Personally it's fine the way it is regardless.

No money, no sponsorship meaning players will not want to play here as the wages will be rock bottom Empty dilapidated stadiums will be the norm with no money in the game to maintain them, and clubs would go part time or close altogether As much as I’d love you to be right it would be the death knell of English football

Thin end of wedge to a European Super League Can't be the thin end of the wedge. I've heard at least a dozen times over the past 15 years that various changes implemented at that time was the thin end. By now we must be at the thick end of the wedge surely?

It’s a super league in everything bar name
Clubs resting players in their domestic league in order to participate in it
It’s all set up for the major clubs to fight out the last 16 places with the format it’s in
Clubs can lose a group league match but still have 5 games to claw it back meaning the minnows drop out
The days of a Bruges, Malmö etc getting to a final are well gone
And we’ve got fools saying it’s great for the English game when our clubs get far in the competition

It’s a controversial topic of whether to bet for things you don’t want to happen.....
saw Man Us share price had plummeted in the last 12mths, down about 30percent. It made a steep fall after Mourinho left. And fell gradually thereafter.
Wondered if it Might be worth lumping ping a few quid on Man U shares.... change of manager and then each year, we move closer to even bigger pots for these clubs. Man U are particularly attractive at the moment due to being at a low ebb. No way they wouldn’t get an invite to a euro super league, surely.

Was our league system boring, did we have no skilled players, were our clubs over populated with overseas players during the 70's??? I remember both low and high attendances and also the price if admission being easily affordable. How many English clubs would we lose to a pan European league and how many clubs would it have, how many divisions? Promotions? Relegation back to your country? It'll turn into a franchise and end up becoming a closed shop. There are plenty of clubs to fill the void

There are plenty of clubs to fill the void This was before a world where commercialism and tv money are the main sources of income in English football, 11 of the 20 Premier League clubs could turn a profit without any fans attending for the whole such is the extent of the money in those areas of the game. As soon as the Big Clubs pack off and leave the wider audience which inevitably is what these changes are driven by disappears with it and with that the money goes too. Other leagues in Europe have horrifically unfair distribution of tv income and most clubs outside of an immediate circle of 2-4 clubs are shite, those clubs leaving into any form of super league would have the same effect as there simply wouldn’t be the Worldwide audience for a Burnley v Bournemouth when Man City v PSG is on the other side. The game has moved on since the 70s, and in this respect certainly not for the better.

The sooner, the more prestigious clubs, depart to the inevitable euro-club league, the better it will be for those that remain. I think everyone gets the sentiment on that, but I cannot see Sky or BT being interested in a weakened English Football League system. You'd have a new Premier League where the champion might be Leicester, West Ham, fuck it, even us years down the line if we hopefully get back up.
It's not marketable enough to Sky or BT, and they might have a few games on, no where near the potential 3 a week they currently broadcast. The money will soon dry up, players are going to want to play in the Super League and the FL squads would be severely weakened.
Would they have a promotion/relegation system? So if you're utterly shit in the Euro League, down you go, someone from the domestic league gets promoted and takes their place. I'd suspect not as I imagine the big clubs want it immediately locked down.

Winning the Premier League without those clubs in it as well is like winning the World's Tallest Dwarf competition. Same with people who say the way to solve the woes of the Carabao Cup are to exclude the teams in Europe from it. The Carabao Cup IMO would be much better and profitable is you regionalised it for the early rounds into a group system. Ensure there's some bite in those games and people would attend them.

I think it's just those of us that remember when the "European Cup" was just for league champions....and then got pissed off when they extended it to the "Champions league", so now you can basically enter if you happen to play for a team and have known someone who's best friend's cat has once been to a Man City game at some point in their life. It pissed people off because it made the game all about money even moreso than it was already becoming.
A lot of people see things like the re-structutring of the European Cup as being the forerunner of ideas like this and became the start of fucking up all that was good about the game in the first place. It was all done for money, not the sport.
I can thoroughly understand why it pisses people off that the winners of "The Champions League" aren't champions in the first place (It is daft that the last team that won the "CHAMPIONS league" trophy haven't actually been Champions of any league for nearly 30 years don't you think?).
I also think it's shit that teams get knocked out of the Champs League and are then allowed to enter the Europa League instead (again, all for money so they can have "big name" teams in the Europa league)
And that, in a nutshell, is the problem. It was precisely things like this that made football ALL about money and the "Big clubs" in the first place, which is precisely why if they now make what Werrington rightly says, is basically the long awaited "Super League" in all but name, then the rest of us may as well just pack up shop.

I think the issue with making it a Champions only league is that it would further close the shop, especially in league where one team is so so dominant. At least as it stands currently you can still get the odd new boy making a name for themselves, seeing Spurs in there having a net spend of 50 mil for the last 5 years yet disrupting the top 4 some were saying 10 years ago would never be broken should give people some hope. I agree RE the Europa League and personally I'd remove the automatic qualification for the following season's champions league if you have dropped down into the Europa from that season's competition. Because it's fundamentally unfair to the smaller clubs involved in that competition, if not scrap that part all together. The trouble is, UEFA's idea of solving the problem is just to launch more European Competitions for smaller clubs (Europa League 2) which in truth just reinforces the inequality. But then again, if a sport opens itself up to market as openly as football has it will be subject to the whims of that market. I've no doubt the bubble will burst at some point, the TV model is quickly becoming obsolete given that people want to stream more and more. It's not sustainable to make people sub to 3-4 different providers to watch their football and I feel the whole system is one miscalculation away from collapsing in on itself a la ITV digital.

Since it tootled off to BT I haven’t seen a minute of Champs League football and it bothers me not one jot. It’s football for the Far East, US, etc TV markets and they are welcome to it.
The TV companies, journalists, club owners et al will never understand it but just because Barcelona and Bayern for example, have the best players it doesn’t make it any more interesting to a large number of football fans than a game going on down the road. In fact to fans of Espanyol, Munich 1860 and many other clubs (such as our good selves) it’s a positive turn off.
Oh and let’s be clear ‘English’ clubs in no way represent this nation.

Who the hell wants more? apparently some of the televised Championship games get better (UK) viewing figures than many Champions League group game matches Such is the beauty of our football league system which despite its faults is arguably the most equitable in the world in terms of support and success. No other league has the diversity of champions and domestic cup winners as England does. At least none of the established leagues anyway. France was pretty similar before PSG were bought out but lacks the depth. Germany has big clubs that are well supported but not the same level of success shared out. The issue is that in places like Spain less than 100 people have been recorded watching games like Las Palmas v Leganes, it's all about the top 2 and then a sub-tier including Atletico, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla and Valencia. Which extends to the foreign markets where this money is ultimately generated.
