Should have stuck with Lambert IMO. We should have stuck with the guy who achieved the second-worst record of any Stoke manager ever, who failed miserably to meet the one objective he had, which was to avoid relegation with a team that had only just squeezed into the bottom three by a hair when he arrived - somehow making our average points haul worse along the way. 16 months later and it's not even that unreasonable an idea. How telling is that.

Just like at Birmingham, the abject failure of others is making him appear a better manager than he is. What was his big mistake out of interest? Said it was the post match interview with the local press where he had a go at the fans regarding Bojan. He's got no doubt that finished him off here. Agree

As much as I hated the man and wanted him gone at the time, I'm now starting to think we shouldnt have sacked him because we went on a good run of 10 games or so unbeaten then lost at birmingham and he was gone, also because we keep on going on about Jones needing time when Rowett had half a season then he was out the door

Well I respect him for saying sorry. Still feel he saddled us with a bunch of players who fall short of what is needed to get promotion for an awful lot of money and expensive long contracts. Clucus may turn out well in the end, but the rest of them are too inconsistent, have major deficiencies in their game, or simply just not good enough. I can't say Jones signings are any better, but at least they didn't cost much and saddle us with a huge financial problem going forward.

Hughes was sacked at least 6 months too late because he had lost the plot. Lambert should never have been appointed but at the time because Hughes was sacked at least 6 months too late we had little choice. Rowett looked a good idea but he spent £50 million making us worse played dull ineffective football and fell out with everyone. Sacked for good reasons. Jones looked like a really good idea at the time and he is still a likeable character but results are terrible and he has to go soon. Just because our new manager is useless doesn't mean we should have kept the old useless manager.

Rowett is the worst of the lot. The worst manager we've ever had.
Has any other manager in this league ever spent any where near the amount he spent? And then not troubled the top half?
He should never work in football again. Absolute waster

He should never work in football again. Absolute waster Transfer inflation means only Hughes onwards could have spent those amounts in such a short space of time. Mills got us relegated from this division after spending a cool million at the end of the 80s - the money was meant to turn us into a promotion team. Edit : I misread the question, but the point still stands as far as our managers are concerned.

He signed McClean and Ince enough said. And Afobe... Indeed any manager who thinks Ince Afobe Mcclean is the answer to a front 3 in a 4-3-3 needs sectioning. In addition to that car crash he was, and still is an absolute arsehole who thinks he is better than he is. A complete dumb ass for turning on fans favourite players and fans themselves otherwise it's likely he would still be in a job. Let's see where he ends up.

The whole point of the Bojan thing was that people were crying out for some creativity from anywhere. If he'd found some and we actually created much the Bojan thing wouldn't have become nearly the issue it did.

Wonder if he is secretly angling for his job back? Bloody hope not To be fair, he actually comes across quite well if you watch the whole thing. Reflective, disappointed it didn't work out, says he learnt more here than anywhere else in his career and it's clear he genuinely did want things to work out for the club. Decent bloke to be honest. Hopefully though, both him and Jones will serve as a warning to the people on here who want to give every ex-Stoke player a managing job, purely on the basis of them being a "nice chap". Used to think it was obvious that he (and now Jones) was out of his depth...now starting to wonder if because of the complete shambles the club is nowadays, if even Pep would be out of his depth. This shitshow both on and off the pitch could be a re-building job the likes of which has rarely been seen. Rowett alludes to the troubles in the interview, talking about how frank he had to be with the owners about some things that had to change.....Lambert said when he got here he'd never seen such a disorganised and unfit Prem team...Jones has said of things/processes he's had to change. This seems to be like re-building a sandcastle when the tides coming in...just how fucking bad have things been getting in the background? Worrying fucking times!!

I agree and he speaks about stabilising us, and it’s really hard to argue with what he said, he did stop the slide, since he’s left no matter how much you like jones (which I do) we are in absolute free fall. I could bank on Rowett grinding out a draw no matter how drab it was, Jones I just feel like no matter what he does, we’ll lose. But I don’t want to sack him, as I think he’ll go somewhere and succeed. I just feel we’re the right club, at completely the wrong time.

Don't have any great issue with Rowett myself
Thought he was a good appointment at the time though it soon became apparant that it wasn't. Absolutely the right decision to get rid of him, regardless of what has happened since

We did go 10 games undefeated but many posters on here complained about the dreadful football and the fact we only won 4 of those matches and lost ground against the leading teams, so it was hardly "good", but was better than the first 10 matches which were dreadful. We lost to Birmingham, then had a goalless draw at Bolton (what a match!), then lost at home to Bristol City, then drew at Shrewsbury, then Rowett was sacked. Your last comment is correct, but the circumstances are different. Rowett had half a season having spent £50 million for his own players, the start of the season was dire, then we went of the almost goalless 10 game unbeaten run, then started losing again, then Rowett was sacked, not just for his record, but for criticising players and fans, but not accepting any responsibility himself. Jones had half a season with Rowett's players, tried different tactics, tried different players, gave young players games in the first team, then got his own players this summer on a shoe string budget (all the money is gone/committed!), and has failed to win in 7 league matches. Jones is man enough to accept he is responsible for the lack of results. Changes teams but gets criticised, changes tactics but gets criticised. If Rowett was any good another club would have appointed him.

Three successive Premier League 9th place finishes and some of the best quality football in 40 years is condemned to be wiped off the record then? You should remember it and cherish it because it might never happen ever again.

People seem to forget about the football we played under MH. He lost the plot in his final season especially with some of his very dubious signings but at times the football was amazing.

Really gets my goat when people say ‘shouldn’t have sacked TP’ of course we should we were going backwards under him (at the time) but hughes did a great job for us really. He just lost his way towards the end.

Unless I've missed previous interviews where he's shown such humility you have to wonder why now. The easy assumption and using the mantra 'always follow the money' is he's getting a bit desperate for an appointment. He comes across very well in the bit that I've watched and the apology to the fans is much appreciated but it's 9 months overdue, he does that the day after his incredulous outburst and he's viewed very differently by a large number of fans imo. If he'd shown the character that he's showing now whilst he was in the job he might still be in it, the football played was by and large shit but that could've been to steady the ship and it 'might' have improved. When you are stuck in that environment day after day, under constant pressure, its very human to snap a bit and have a pop. It's very hard to maintain a higher level of dignity and maturity. He's certainly not the first, certainly won't be the last person to feel the pressure like that. Interesting point about all the internal talk about "when we're promoted...". I get ambition and the goal, but shows that definitely moved over the line to complacency.
