Can you please ask the question at the next meeting with the club executives about naming the stands after past heroes. Our football icons at this club are endless. Why not do something more for them, personally I think every stand should be named after a former legend. Any feedback off the council members is appreciated.

Send PM to the president of the council, ange1. It is a reasonable, non-controversial request. There’s no reason why a stand can’t be named and sponsored at the same time.

I think we should have a stand named after the heroic Butler Street.
It stood for season after season, surviving the Second World War and everything that players and fans could fire at it, before giving up and collapsing in suspicious circumstances early in 1976. but the name lives on.

Greenhoff, Conroy, Viollet, Smith, Eastham, Ritchie and Hudson are just a few who are more than fitting of such an honour. We need to make it happen.

Like the "Boothen End sponsored by Staffordshire University". Surely it would be more beneficial to a company to be sponsoring the "Gordan Bank Stand" or the "Stanley Matthew stand"? Better than just naming it after your own company and no-one using the name because they changed so much. I don't even know what the stand I sit in is called at the moment come to think of it...I just refer to it as the one "opposite the dugots"...!

We could also name all the bogs after the really bad players, like the Brek Shea Shit House, the Wolfscheidt Shit House, the Jose-Loo, the Berahino Piss Pot.

Well surely a fan based poll would be a great idea, something the fans could vote on. It should really happen.

I watched Peter Shilton keep Manchester city out, at Maine road once, pretty much all on his own
nil nil draw against a city side featuring Bell - Marsh - Tueart - Barnes etc ( they absolutely battered us - pounded us -throughout)
A legendary performance and a goalkssping masterclass the likes of which I have never seen since - yielding a standing ovation by all that wntessed that day ( Man City fans too)
and - by a world class goalkeeper
this is where the argument starts that makes the whole idea -plain daft
(with all due respect)

Only on The Oatcake could you find people moaning about honouring former players. Some people on here will moan about anything.

With FFP the sponsorship of the ground and stands are important. It would be great to name certain parts of the ground after past players but with so many it’s not really viable. At least the roads are named after some of our heroes.

We've got the Franklyn Stand already. Just need to find 3 more companies with the same name as players.
Could have the Parma Violet stand,

I have sympathy with the idea, but can see a few problems.
1. What is the criteria for selection? Gordon Banks was a world cup winner for England, long serving player, and President, so he is clearly in the lead. We revere Stanley Matthews (quite rightly IMO) and he meets many of the criteria, but not everyone does. Geoff Hurst (a Stoke player who is the only player in history to score a hat-trick in a WC final) does not have Stan in his top 50 players book, but does include Tom Finney. (Prat - Geoff, not Tom)
2. I think is wise not to put up a statue or name a stand for someone until they are deceased. There are a few occasions these days when people's true personality does not become public till after they die, so it is wise to be cautious.
3. Name all the stands and then our next super star/hero comes along. Are all our greatest in the past? Personally I like the idea of recognising a lot more of our past players and think we should have far more murals, mosaics, statues etc. around the ground honouring them, not forgetting past managers, owners, founders, and other officials, and many even a few famous fans!
