It was a fucking terrible move. I’m not sure anyone ever thought any different at any stage. The vic was our anfield, but better.

I think the term 'lead balloon' would be appropriate.

Worse thing we ever did. I dont care what they said about it was not possible to modernise the vic,West from did the hawthorns. With lots of money it would have been quite easy, would have required the Trent diverting. The club did actually announce a new 9000 seat stand for the Butler Street which looked very similar to the main stand at the new ground The whole thing would have very expensive though and utterly beyond the club at the time.

Opinions were mixed I think. I was sad to lose the Vic but I was also excited at the prospect of a new modern stadium. I was only young mind you. Realistically it was an opportunity we couldn't have turned down.

Coates was able to source FA grants and loads to help to build the Brit Without those we couldn't have moved The same money was not available to redevelop current stadia

At abut this point in one of these threads someone mentions ankle deep piss in the bogs.
Well, it all got a bit smelly, and pissing in the sinks was accepted. But ankle deep? I don't remember that. Rolling your prog up and pissing down it yes.
If you go to an "event" in this modern era of Elf & Safety - those portable blue shit holes are the worst pieces of health risk that I have ever seen.

Is was a mixed response at very best. The Trent and the Boothen end were the issues for a 'cheap' refurbishment.

Think you may be right Dutch. It was also why we kept the cost so low. Think it was the cheapest stadium built around that time

I always felt that the Boothen end at the Vic was quite similar to Sheff Utd home end. There's was made all seating easily.
Wasn't the problem the Butler street ? Might be wrong there but either way a dreadful move but I guess like some grounds we aren't next to a Burger King , Argos or Next

The whole ethos back then was to get football grounds away from City centers. Police on horses chasing fans around what were actually residential areas wasn't considered chic. So moving grounds out of the centers, to near Motorway junctions was the way to go.
Ship em in, and ship em out.

I had a ST in the corner of the Butler Street stand in the early 70s. If I remember correctly the men’s urinal drained straight into the River Trent, which was directly underneath the corner stand. Consequently the river would have to have been diverted to accommodate a new stadium.

Diverting the river was too expensive and there was not room to move the footprint of the stadium.

In this age of super stadiums like the new Spurs one, it’s sobering to think our ground that was so state of the art not so long back is actually quite dated. When you also think that it’s architecture is based on Manchester United’s new main stand for the 1966 World Cup, then it’s even older.

Horrible horrible idea. It's a shame Coates didn't have his pockets filled with gold back then because we might still be there. Part of Stoke City died when we moved. The Brit and it's location is shite. The Brit is much better now than when it was when I watched us draw against Rochdale for the first ever game there but it's still shite. (Kav's goal gave us false hope)
