I see O'Neill has responded to his early critics in fine style. Fair play to him.

How does this work now with the international break?. Has it been confirmed which of our staff, Delap etc stay and oversee training or will he bring in 'his' staff to take control. An update of some sort soon would be good from the club?

As a Northern Ireland supporter I came onto this forum to see what your opinions were about Michael's appointment as your new manager, i am very surprised to see such negativity. As far as i am concerned you have hit the jackpot by appointing him, he is a simply brilliant manager who if given a little bit of time and support will take Stoke in the right direction again. As for what you can expect from him 1) He is a superb man manager who players will respect as he will treat them like adults but is not scared to crack the whip if need be, he works hard on creating a fantastic team spirit, expect team bonding nights to figure highly as time goes on, with Northern Ireland the players were always asked to meet up on a Sunday afternoon/evening rather than the Monday morning so that they could all go out together on the town on a Sunday night and were allowed a couple of drinks to get the international week off to a postitive start. 2) He is great motivator, he is a highly intelligent guy who comes up with simple but smart ways to motivate players for example at the start of his 2nd campaign with NI (Euro 2016) after we had finished the previous one with 7 points from a possible 30, he produced the group table showing how many points we would have had had the games finished after 75 minutes it would have been 17 points, so he said it normally takes 18 points to make the Euro play-offs so no matter how bad we were in the previous campaign if we had've managed the games better never mind improving that would translate to making the play-offs in this tournament, the players seen that qualifying was possible and we ended up winning the group. 3) Match preparation - ask any of his NI players and they will tell you he is the best any of them have ever had in preparing them for a game and i not talking about League 1 players saying that, i am talking about the likes of Jonny Evans who played under Alex Ferguson, Steven Davis who played under Ronald Koeman & Mauricio Pochettino etc. Every player knew their role in his team, everyone of them knew the players they were going directly up against in the opposition, what their individual strengths and weaknesses were, what areas of the pitch they played in or didn't like to be forced into, what their temperament was like etc etc. 4) Michael puts a strong emphasis on having leaders in the changing room, he will build a rapport with key senior players that he believes he can trust and will allow them to almost manage the changing room he will bounce ideas of them and also allow them to give him their opinions or bring forward any ideas or problems that the squad may have. I am not sure what he will do at Stoke but with the NI squad, he asked the players not to call him boss, gaffer, manager etc, he preferred to be called Michael. 5) His footballing style is high intensity possession based football, but he is a practical manager who will not implement that style of play if he doesn't feel he has the players to play it. With NI he came into a setup that played long ball football and quickly changed us into a passing team that played decent football, in his first campaign the results were awful but the vast majority of supporters stuck with him because you could see what he was trying to do and the performances were alot better than the results, we were creating more chances in a single game than we had done in 3 or 4 under the previous manager. After his first campaign was over he seen that we were maybe playing too much football in dangerous areas so he decided to make us more defensively solid by mixing up our football more playing some long balls and also playing some passing football and this worked very well for us. After we missed out in the World Cup playoff (thanks to a horrendous referee) Michael brought some younger players into the team (Jamal Lewis, Jordan Jones, Gavin Whyte etc) and with those young players came real pace so Michael changed our style yet again to start playing more football and this time a high intensity press and that was worked out very well for us. You may have heard the whole "Tony Pulis style of football thing" that was mentioned in connection with him but this is utter rubbish, this seemed to be mentioned because we had two great set piece takers in Chris Brunt and Ollie Norwood and a aerial giant in Gareth McAuley an scored 7 goals of set pieces in one of the campaigns. There is probably lots more i could say about him and that i have forgotten about, if any of you have any questions ask away, i'll keep a check on this thread over the next day or two. I think he's brilliant

Good win, but he's still a very big risk, compounded by being in two jobs. Our players don't need a huge excuse to turn their committment levels down.
... whereas Warnock was far less of one in this league and probably the candidate who knows and has conquered this league better than anyone over the past decade. Wonder if we had gone for him if he'd left Cardiff 2 weeks ago?

Would people's opinions be different if Stoke had announced last week that terms had been agreed with MoN and that he would take up his position with Stoke effective Monday 18 Nov? That would have been a perfectly reasonable position for all parties to adopt but would have deprived us of his services for the Barnsley game.

Michael himself said that not being at the club and working with the players was not such a setback as people make it out to be. He made the point that quite a few of our better players would be away on international duty too, which would mean, even if he wasn't away, he wouldn't be able to work with them.

Can we please lock this thread now? Or do we have to have any interested parties wade through 451 pages of Stokies being at their best everytime they check in to see how MON's doing?

Well simple for most, it is ....

Talksport just been gushing over our new manager.Expected him to go to a club in the Prem and they agreed it is a fantastic appointment for us. They’ve been wring before , I’m still hearing warning bells . 1 Amszed how fast the game was Saturday from O’Neil himself 2 Stoke went the extra mile ie we were desperate enough to let him keep his current job and pay him 50% more than we are paying hughes at the beginning of his tenure . not knocking O’Neil just saying one result doesn’t offset that’s it’s a huge risk abs he’s totally unproven in this or Any English league

He doesn't sound overly keen on doing the play-off games for NI in March... www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunday-life/michael-oneill-focused-on-victory-ahead-of-emotional-windsor-park-farewell-38683385.htmlO’Neill admitted he would have turned down the Potters job if he’d been denied the chance to lead his beloved Northern Ireland on Saturday night in Belfast and next Tuesday in Frankfurt.
"That was my decision," said O’Neill. "I would not have taken the job if I wasn’t allowed to do the two games.
"It simply wasn’t the right thing to walk out before the end of the campaign and I was very lucky John and Peter understood that.
"For the players to give me what they have over the last seven years, to just jump a few days before we play the Netherlands and Germany — I was never going to do that. There has to be a bit of loyalty on my part." The Irish FA announced on Friday, in their statement on O’Neill’s departure, that they had come to an agreement with Stoke with regard to keeping the Ballymena man should Northern Ireland reach those play-offs.
But O’Neill hinted that arrangement will maybe be discussed at further date and the IFA may have even chosen a replacement come early next year.
"It is not for now," stated O’Neill. "We will look at that scenario when it comes around and the association has a lot of time. All these things can’t be decided in the space of 48 hours, but I have already a good relationship with the owner.
"The relationship between them and the association is good, based on the negotiations to let me take this job. Common sense will prevail and we’ll get the right resolution for everyone."

Sorry if already discussed but do we know the backroom staff situation yet? Interesting that Cousins seems to be coming in as a staff member, not a scout/recruitment chief www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-manager-michael-oneill-3527734Andy Cousins, a highly-rated head scout for Northern Ireland and scout for Manchester City, is coming in alongside O’Neill. It is understood that he will take a back room role rather than be on the front line in recruitment but a title is yet to be confirmed. The rest of the make-up is yet to be confirmed

That would have been a perfectly reasonable position for all parties to adopt but would have deprived us of his services for the Barnsley game. This so called part-time manager situation is a red herring and non entity isn't it. He made a great contribution to the Barnsley game before taking up the reins with NI for a week to manage their games against Netherlands on Sat 16th and then Germany on Tues 19th. Gives Michael a week with our lads before the Cardiff game on Tues 26th. Absolutely no problem whatsoever! Think we've got a real diamond manager this time!! And he'll be fine prepping the lads for the Wigwam game on Sat 23rd too
