sportmagazine.knack.be/sport/voetbal-internationaal/thibaud-verlinden-volgend-jaar-basisspeler-bij-stoke-en-dan-premier-league/article-normal-1553317.html'I visited with my parents and agent Liverpool and Everton, but I didn't have a good feeling about it. During the tour at Stoke City I immediately felt welcome. The manager Mark Hughes took me aside in his office. "Look, boy, you will get a real chance with me."
"That conversation convinced me to opt for Stoke. Money was not my first motivation. I got a scholarship, a kind of scholarship, and that didn't mean much. At Standard I could earn even more. At Stoke City I was promised that as a 16-year-old I would regularly train with the A-team with men like Xherdan Shaqiri and Marko Arnautovic. Standard could only guarantee me a place at the U17 ... The choice was made quickly. In addition, my dad was offered a job as a goalkeeper coach. "
"The intention is to be the starting player at Stoke next season and then move on to the Premier League. But I also don't want to skip any steps. Players who break through in the Premier League are at least 23 or 24 years old. So I'm not in a hurry. I have my father on the phone every day and he feels the same way. He says: "Take your time, stay calm, no stress, play your matches and see what comes your way." He repeats it often enough because he knows how impatient young people are.
"As a little boy you naturally dream of being a famous footballer in your own country. But I don't mind that Belgium doesn't know me. I can play my matches without pressure and the recognition will follow later. I feel at home here and I would find it strange to return to Belgium right now. I will do everything to make it here. Whether in the Championship or in the Premier League. I would be very pleased if I had Championship on my honours list at the age of 30. Rather second division in England than first division in Belgium, but of course you never know what the future will bring. " As grounded and professional as I suspected, his dad was a goalkeeper and only 5"9, must have been bloody good to make it at that height.

Seems to have his head screwed on, has ambition but knows (and seemingly his dad knows as well) that he must work hard to achieve results.
Really he hope he starts breaking through now, he could be a very important player for us next season, regardless of what league we're playing in.

I just want to see many more moments of Thibaud rather than James or Thomas. Simple.

Good. Now hopefully its because we intend to use him and not because we haven't signed another winger.

Great news, heās got the talent, drive and is level headed enough to succeed, letās hope he takes his chances when they come along and becomes part of a new successful Stoke team.

All he's done since he's come on is take the wrong option every time and aggravated the players around him.
Direct runner though.
A project for next season I feel. Think O'Neill will get something out of him in time. He strikes me as that type of coach.
What frustrates me is the one kiddie we have who is more than ready he won't play (Collins).

Bit harsh to write him off after a short sub appearance, he didnāt set the world alight but I thought he looked reasonably lively, I think heās got potential.

I don't think it's fair to judge either him or Thompson on tonight's performance & people say we didn't need a centre half. Chester is just what we need. Did anybody see Baaths 50 yard hoof to nobody within 40 yardsšš

Verlinden showed a lot of desire tonight but he was bullied off the ball too easily. If OāNeil and co can coach him to release the ball a bit earlier then Iām still sure weāre onto a winner.

Iāll be polite and say he was being āover eagerā. His decision making was poor but thereās loads to be positive about with him just need to patient....

Verlinden showed a lot of desire tonight but he was bullied off the ball too easily. If OāNeil and co can coach him to release the ball a bit earlier then Iām still sure weāre onto a winner. To be fair, those were the comments coming from Keith Hill at Bolton in the league below. Many fans thought it was sour grapes from him because he was losing a good un on loan, but I reckon he's about right. He has the tools but we need a bit of patience with this one. Something clicked all of a sudden with Campbell and I reckon O'Neill can and will do the same with Thibaud in time. Pace, ability on the ball, can beat a man. The rest will come with experience and coaching from the right people.

How can anyone think the paceless, clueless alternatives tonight are any better. This team needs a bit of x factor not more barely willing plod.
