If not Roy to open against the Aussies, then who? Denly to open,Root at 3,Roy at 4? Sibley was the logical choice to open, we really shouldn’t be trying to shoehorn Roy into the side. If he’s not up to opening then he shouldn’t get in the side.

If we can't bat a whole day out in these conditions against Ireland then what hope is there?! Oh well, Root will save the day.

If we can't bat a whole day out in these conditions against Ireland then what hope is there?! Oh well, Root will save the day. I think the Irish will have been delighted to be bowling first, even in batting conditions. Much more likely to win the game by taking advantage of our top order mess in the first innings than bowling after making a lowish score.

This is why I don’t get Root’s reluctance to bat at 3. With our top order as fragile as it is he’s always batting inside the first hour anyway.
This Ashes series could be one of the lowest scoring series on record as neither side can bat.

Can we find a new top 3 before the first test starts?

True it was a good toss to lose for them but this embarrassing yet again from our top order. Lucky for us, Australia are equally flaky.

Batting halfway down is one way of getting to it early I guess....

I don't care we won the World Cup here, we're simply shocking at Lords, or have been for a long time anyway (based on memory, I might be proven wrong with facts haha)

That Bairstow shot was something else.
The Ashes is going to start too early for the one day batsmen. I’d be getting Foakes, Sibley, Northeast and Hain into the side.

The first morning of any test in this country is always about keeping your wicket.
Sadly that task seems well beyond our top order and has been that way for a considerable time.
It's laughable. Only it ain't funny.

I know Murtagh has a fantastic first class record but I don’t think he’d pick up 5 wickets in 7 overs bowling in the Staffordshire league.
Just hideous batting.

Broad is legitimately displaying better technique, fully forward, high elbow and bat face open to the ball rather than closed than 1-6. Pathetic.

He sums up England’s muddled selection policy. Scored plenty of runs and averages over 40 in tests. He’s done enough to be in the side just as a batsman, when you consider he’s our best keeper by an absolute mile it’s mind boggling why he doesn’t get picked.
