Our arrogance shines through yet again.
We fucked over the good people of Hong Kong, and now we have the audacity to try and get involved with current goings on.....

Given that some of the more recent official pronouncements from China, were tantamount to "put your house in order,or we will do it for you..." this is regrettably predictable.

The global super powers slowly exerting pressure and expanding their reach.. China, India, US.
If things were correct with the world then Lam would be gone, or would have done as the people have been asking.
However, what's happening now was all part of the plan and no one is going to have the balls to help Hong Kong.

Hong Kong should be thankful that China want to control them, they'll have much greater influence on the world being controlled by China. Small, independent, unique countries have no place in this world anymore...

In order for the UK to protect itself it needs to be part of a greater power and not isolate itself. India to Kashmir, China to Hong Kong, Russia to Ukraine, etc. The global powers are exerting pressure and we need to be able to resist it. Something only a united EU has a chance of doing.

It all depends who you view as the good & bad guys, doesn't it? I'm sure there are people in Hong Kong who want to be controlled by China, I'm sure there are people in Ukraine who want to be controlled by Russia, personally I think they'd both do better standing on their own two feet... And you're right, the global powers are exerting pressure, and we are trying to resist it. Unfortunately there are some amoung us who're as daft as the minorities in Hong Kong & Ukraine & want us to be controlled by the EU

Wasn't a united Europe Hitler's idea^. Look how that went.
In a group there is always a bully that controls them. Independent people say what they want, not what they are told to say.
Pity I won't be alive when we conquer space and China can have its' own planet along with Russia. Somehow though I doubt they will be satisfied with that even. They want it ALL and will never stop pushing and bullying until they get it.

NATO is a good idea. Not perfect. Nation states cooperating without giving unnacountable control.

Sooner or later someone will have to stand up to them. It wont be cheap or easy and will cost many lives but bullies never stop until someone hits them on the nose in my experience. Same goes for Russia. A United Europe will not be able to contend with either of them , half of them don't pay enough into their defence now. What is it 2% of GDP they are supposed to pay and yet the Yanks have to threaten them with withdrawal in an attempt to get them to cough up. Imagine a United Europe with NO US support and a tiny toy military force. That's what a United Europe will be not a strong super power.

Only the US spends more. An EU army would certainly have more clout than just the British one. And you may find that EU countries may be more welcoming in investing in an EU army than a military force that the US is trying to control.

I don't think that the EU countries would be happy to invest in an EU army. Where did the Idea of an army come from? The UK Parliament? " i know let's go to Brussels and suggest an army?". I don't think so. Not that our Politicians can suggest anything in the EU. Seems like an idea imposed upon the UK and National governments from " above" with little scrutiny and debate. Top down but a good next step in nationhood and ever closer union.
