How does that offset straight away and keep the temperature rise down ? Are they mature trees as the carbon has gone into the air now, if only saplings it will take years to bring the carbon down out of the atmosphere?

Tree planting is largely greenwashing, whether those who claim to plant them are aware or not. Many of the trees planted are dead within a couple of years. Protecting existing trees is also much more effective as carbon is stored over decades/centuries not only in the tree but the soil beneath it.

Do you know much about why hydrogen seems to be being completely ignored when it comes to cars? Is it because the world's richest man has invested loads into electric cars?

The oil companies have kept it down for years as well The cost of splitting water (H2O) and extracting the hydrogen, coupled with infrastructure and safety, so in effect 3 elements are deemed astronomical right now. I mentioned on another thread a few weeks back, about Shell trying to develop what they called "The Hydrogen Highway"right across fromt eh west coast of NL up to the Polish border. at the time this ran into the trillions so they put it to one side. Perhaps they will re-visit it They should have a bsh at this: Floating flexioble solar panels fromt the egg heads at TNO here in NL www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/11/dutch-start-trials-of-flexible-floating-solar-panels-which-move-with-the-waves/Very intersting I found.....

I agree that hydrogen is an energy source to get away from fossil fuels, provided you don't use fossil fuel generated electricity to produce it. I would be concerned about letting the general public have ready access to hydrogen on safety grounds. It surprises me there are not more major incidents will fuel spillage etc. at petrol stations. We only seem to see them on films! Petrol and diesel can be ignited by smoking or static sparks, etc. Hydrogen is a lot more dangerous and the "right" mixture of air and hydrogen massively explosive. Worse than natural gas/methane. So a gas leak from a car could have dire consequences for anything and anybody in the vicinity. (I am not posting on behalf of the petroleum industry. )

This looks good tuliphead. The advantage solar power has is it still generates when cloudy. Unlike wind power which stops when not windy. The major problem with a lot of renewables is they are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions which the experts say are going to get more extreme. So we need ways of over producing power are storing it, such as hydrogen stores. One the current reasons for the rise in gas prices is the world ran down LPG stocks during the pandemic. This is a terrible prospect to wind, solar, and tidal power:

The government here has given funding to do research on utilising the north sea wind warm power to extract Hydrogen from the sea water, so that's pretty much free power and free water, a very green solution. But the problem with wind turbines are they use balsa wood in the blades, balsa wood which comes from the Amazon rain forest ! You can't grow trees quickly so its deforestation for the trees at the moment.

How serious is it at this stage? I don't really get how these projects get moving and can't tell the difference between a PR stunt and definitely going ahead. Saying things like "up to 500 MW" could just mean 5 MW gets done.

Large battery recycling plants going up quickly. We start full industrial-scale production in early 2022 with two plants, the first, which is currently being installed and will be ready for commissioning in January, is focused on lead-acid battery recycling. The second on lithium-ion battery recycling is now in a manufacture test phase and will be ready for commissioning in February 2022. The sites are both located in the Midlands. Our recently announced partnership with Slicker Recycling provides a full UK footprint for safe custodianship of collection, of all types of li-ion batteries to our processing plants as we start to build front end inventory during 2022 and grow production. In addition, the wider Slicker group is also very strong in Europe offering a mirror image of the services they offer in the UK. So that could be, at the appropriate time, important for us as we build commercial relationships in Europe. www.theengineer.co.uk/battery-recycling-capabilities-tm-technology-minerals-circular-economy-li-ion-lead-acid/

Do you know much about why hydrogen seems to be being completely ignored when it comes to cars? Is it because the world's richest man has invested loads into electric cars? It isn't being completely ignored in cars. JLR, to name just one manufacturer I have dealings with, are investing heavily in hydrogen technology and see it replacing EVs in a couple of decades. The issue is that H2 requires extreme refrigeration to make it liquefy and therefore storable and pumpable at garages, which is costly in energy terms and potentially difficult to store and transport safely. Technically it is currently feasible but there is a large cost gap, just as there was with electric vehicles 20 years ago. That's come down year on year. EVs are expected to be cost equal with ICEs by 2025, especially as the second hand market for them takes off. That doesn't mean EVs won't bridge that gap until hydrogen becomes a viable fuel, nor that it's a 'green con'.

Did anyone watch the final episode of The Lakes with Simon Reeve? I didn't realise Sellafield was in such a horrific state. "The most hazardous industrial site in western Europe" and Reeve doesn't do hyperbole. I think they said it'll cost another £100bn of taxpayers money to clean up. There was a good section on wind power and a snippet on making farms more environmentally friendly too. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00123r2/the-lakes-with-simon-reeve-series-1-episode-3It's been an excellent series!

Wind turbines just keep getting bigger
GE have produced a 12MW turbine, a 260m-tall offshore turbine capable of generating enough energy for 16,000 European homes, rising to one million households in a 750MW configuration wind farm.

Here in Wales we're all getting our own free tree from Drakeford (bless im), just have to find somewhere to plant it.

I wonder how many millions of real Xmas trees will get chopped down this Xmas , nan the real tree and get a falsie 🤧 Most of the trees that are cut down to become Christmas trees were planted to become Christmas trees in the first place. Therefore if you ban Christmas trees, the planting of those trees will cease simultaneously.
